The door opened easily. Shane was sitting on his bed, staring at the wall. His mother's pendant lay in his hands. It seemed that he hadn't noticed Hope's arrival.

Shane jumped a little and then looked over to Hope. "Oh, hello," he said. "Did the boy give you a key?"

Hope nodded. She went over to him and hugged him around the neck. She sat down in his lap.

"I'm glad you're alright," Shane said. "I was worried for a little while." He hugged her back tightly.

"They're required to," Shane said. "They have too much at risk to not. See, if they don't follow the rules of the council, the ruling will be automatically in our favor."
