"I think she knows, but it doesn't make it any less difficult," Lin replied, "Some people just aren't made for the blade. I know part of her problem is, she doesn't want to learn it, but I think the other part of it, it probably doesn't feel right to her."

Of course that was a feeling Lin herself could not understand, but she had seen examples of it. Her own mother was hopeless with blades along with her older brother Yukito, but they were wonderful with the staff.

"Hmm....."
Lin suddenly thought about the one weapon she knew how to use but didn't use that much, "Now there's a thought..."

Earendil blinked at Lin. "What?" he asked her, curious. "I know that look ... you've had some kind of epiphany ... what are you thinking?"

Something about Miyuki, but he had no idea what it might be. He couldn't read her mind, after all.

"My family all know self defense to some level, but because some of us are less adept at the fighting arts than others, there are people in my family who simply do not use the blade at all. They use the staff, mom and Yukito being the first two on the top of the list. They're.... well terrible at the blade, which is interesting since Yukito's twin brother Yue is quite good with it, but they're adept at the staff."

It probably helped also that the staff was often used as a medium for magic which suited their purposes.

"Maybe, Miyuki would feel more comfortable with a staff than a sword."

"You could always suggest it," Earendil agreed. "And I like that idea better than the bow, even. A bow is useless at close range, and there's no guarantee that having a bow will keep your attackers at bay. We could suggest it to Miyuki and see what she thinks. And worse come to worse, at least we know we have an excellent teacher who's going to be traveling with us."

If Alassea could teach Miyuki to be as adept with the staff as she herself was, Earendil would never worry about his daughter being in danger again.

Well, at least not his logical side.

Lin certainly hoped so otherwise she was going to be at a lost at one to do. After all there were also people in both worlds that were hopeless in the martial arts, which she knew Miyuki wasn't because her little girl obviously knew how to do hand to hand.

"Good, then we'll mention it, keep it in mind and give it a go. Then maybe we'll get somewhere."

"Sounds like a plan," Earendil murmured.

The packing took only an hour or so, and everyone helped except for Kelirahc who was still asleep under the wagon. It had been a long night for him, after all. But when it came time to leave, Leyenda woke him up and brought him to a space in one of the wagons that she had kept clear for him so that he could continue to sleep while they traveled.

Earendil took Andarien in the sling, and the boy was absolutely delighted to see the world that was passing them by. Everything was new to him, even though he had seen much of the same thing when they had gone to the swamp.

Meanwhile, Lin sat in the wagon with Miyuki to explain to her while they traveled about what they would do for her training. Lin really wanted Miyuki to be able to defend herself and she felt the fighting arts was a good way to instill independence (which was probably something from personal experience).

They would try the staff but Miyuki also had to increase her work on hand to hand as well. If nothing else Lin also wanted her child to be fit. There was also a slight talk in trying one's best even if they didn't like it.

It was a small talk though and soon both mother and daughter were riding because it was something they hadn't done in a while and the last thing they wanted was to get saddle sores.

Lin hoped at least it would be a smooth journey to this other town.

It was indeed a smooth and uneventful trip through light forest and open grassland, and just a little over a week later, they arrived at the village of Tavari.

"Smallest village in the Westland," Halmir said proudly, sounding very much like a Gaian tour guide. "I lived here for a while ... well, once it was rebuilt, anyways."

"What happened to it?" Luk asked curiously as they rode towards the edge of the unwalled village.

"Fire," Halmir replied simply. "Thousands of years ago, the entire village died."

"No, they didn't," Leilani spoke up, her eyes on the distant village. "There were four survivors. My parents, and Ulani's."

Shiro stared at her. "Has anyone else noticed that everything seems to happen to our family?" he asked, tilting his head curiously.

"You'd think after all this time you'd be use to it," Lin replied back dryly.

She didn't add that had been a given a long time ago. Everything happened to their families and they seemed to attract people who were the same way apparently.

So this was not a surprise to her at all, granted she did pause for a total of two minutes upon hearing that from Leilani.

"Yeah, you'd think so," Kaito grinned at his brother.

Leilani was watching Lin, curious about her reaction. "What?" she asked. "Your expression does not match your words."

Lin chuckled, "Just because I'm not surprised it would happen to someone in the family, doesn't mean I'm not kind of surprised by the event itself. That would take far more years than I've been alive for me to not be surprised by anything. It's just after a while, I figured if anyone has a story to tell... it's just about everyone in the family."

She couldn't really imagine anyone not having a story to tell, but they always seemed to find the people who had the most amazing stories to tell.

"And just about anyone the family meets."
PostPosted: Wed Feb 23, 2011 6:44 pm

"Well, I suppose it's not a story that many people talk about," Leilani shrugged. "It happened before our parents were even married. I think I was nearly ten before it finally occurred to me to ask why we lived so far away from anyone else."

"I always thought it was because your parents wanted privacy," Aric spoke up, puzzled.

Leilani smiled at him. "Well ... yes, but they also wanted to be away from people. Sure, they were guaranteed hundreds of visitors every year, but at least they didn't have to worry about other crowds in the meantime."

"I'm afraid I don't understand, you say they wanted to be away from people, but they were guaranteed hundreds of visitors every year, and what other crowds do you mean?"

Nothing about Leilani's statement made any sense to Lin at all, because if you wanted privacy then you didn't want anyone to really visit you a lot besides close family and friends.

"Ah," Leilani smiled, "I'm sorry. Allow me to explain. The elves that are born nowadays are different from the elves that were born when I was young. Elves today are born with magic, though it manifests in their late childhood. When I was born, the Light Elves were not born with magic, they needed it to be given to them. My mother and I were some of the very rare few who were actually born with magic - the magic of giving magic."

"Gift-givers," Aric spoke up. "I saw Jewel myself when I was a boy."

"At any rate," Leilani went on, "Aunt Kris was really nervous in the city, so she and her husband and my parents moved out to the valley, where they could be more alone than otherwise. Kris and Mother were best friends - still are, actually. Daeron tells stories about how people like to rub shoulders with royalty, it was the same for Mother because she had such an important gift. At that point, she was indeed the most important person alive to the Light Elves - if anything happened to her, the magic would be gone. When we learned that I had the same gift, I became just as important. They didn't want to deal with that, so they lived out in the middle of nowhere. Yes, every child had to come to see them eventually, but they still had their own space, and they weren't constantly surrounded by people."

Lin blinked "Oh... I see now."

She had heard of the gift giver (but hadn't imagined such a person to still be living or close by). It was then Lin recalled being told there had been only one gift giver which was why the Sky Elves chose to go without one, which in the end they all ended up with only fire magic.

"I didn't know that, it does make sense then to want to be in a place not surrounded by people."

She also had heard the stories from Dareon and had seen people who seemed to care more about the rank than anything else.
