Oh my.. that's so disappointing. Canada has free healthcare, as we all know. And, in accordance with this policy, I was apparently foolish to believe support for the disabled community would have followed suit.
In the United States, there's an organization by the name of Vocational Rehabilitation. An outside vendor strives to successfully place a disabled person in a job. If both the individual and their employer are equally pleased three months down the road, the vendor actually gets paid by the government itself.
I hope everything works out wonderfully for you and your girlfriend.

I hope everything works out wonderfully for you and your girlfriend. There are programs like that here in Canada...however...it seems that once the employer honors their part of the agreement...they seem to back out and look for the first opportunity to shaft the employee. I was working at a grocery store where one co-worker was doing, in my mind, a great effort at his job; he was there for around four months. The next shift I was in, I found out that he had been let go...his only job was to collect baskets and carts. I guess they figured that he wasn't re-trainable (I figured this was the case because employers are always looking out to move their employees around when ever they feel like it). Well so far, things are going great for the two of us. I took a proposal to move to another apartment because new subsidized apartments are opening in the next few months...and I'm on top of the list to get one of them. Problem is that I'll have to use some of the gov't assist I'll be getting for the apartment for getting furniture...then try to re-sell it once I move in with my g/f. Though her and I have been talking of getting a new apartment together so we may need the extra furniture...I don't know right now.

A selling point that I commonly point out is how a percentage of employees must be disabled, as mandated by U.S. law. And we're also tax deductible, which is a nice li'l perk to offer.
If you shop around in the right neighborhoods and buy only what you need, garage sales could easily become your favorite sport. And yeah, believe me, it's a sport. Spend- thifts and cheapskates can be found just about anywhere. And then there's the elusive snatch- and- go, which is a person who buys all of the electronics and is gone in a flash.

speaking of garage sales. =-) . that's what we did today.didn't find much. my daughter found this little wood jewelry box for .50 that is being used for a barbie dresser and shelves. it's the perfect size and the drawers hold all her shoes and dishes. she was so excited. my son found a hard hat at a shop sale for .50. mommy and daddy found nothing =-( .

Garage sales and thrift stores are mostly about luck and great timing. Not every day is going to be successful, but when it's a good day, the taste of victory sure is sweet.

Take your girlfriend shopping for the furniture of course. If you get a bigger place and need more furniture, her liking things you have too would be ideal.

i don't know about where you are, humble, but in my hometown craigslist, and the local used site, as well as the local freecycle group often yield great results.

I find I have most luck at thrift stores. I haven't looked out for garage sales for years...but both can be fun...especially when you go with an open mind...you may find that you discover something you didn't know you were looking for, but you actually want or need,.

*waves at all the lovely guildies*
Yes it was a good weekend for us. The weather has been strange - bouncing between mid 80s and 60 and rainy.
