"Yes ma'am...," Kyle mumbled under his breath, stopping in horrified shock when she revealed how the doll got its name. Now not only was he under the impression that she was a strange girl, he was starting to wonder if she was a bit unhinged. He managed to catch the small, not-quite-smile on her face and snapped out of his horror, warily continuing on.

Again, shock dominated his features as she spoke, never knowing any kids under twelve that didn't have some hope for a visit from the jolly fat man. "Why is that? Everyone believes in Santa," Kyle spoke in a know it all tone, regaining his composure for the first time since he'd seen the girl. "In fact, I saw him once!"

It was easy to see that her attention had been grabbed by something on the tree, and he followed her gaze to a simple ornament, raising his eyebrow at the nutcracker. He turned his head back to her and smirked, asking, "If you did believe in Santa, what would you hope for?" A small idea formed in his head and he decided that proving the little girl wrong might just get a reaction out of her, if nothing else.

((I think she would tolerate a nick-name... But just barely. She's too much of
a lady to lose her temper though.))

When Kyle said he had seen him, she whisked her head and body in his
direction, in a turn to face him. Curls bounced as she looked up at the taller
man. "I see men pretending to be a Saint, wearing fake beards and fake
bellies of pillows." A frown played over her lips. "Mother and Papa told me it
was hogwash to believe in such things as fairy tales."

Emotion danced in her eyes for a split second before she looked at the floor,
seeming to huddle in on herself as she clenched Alice tighter. Was that a
flash of sadness? Her next words were mumbled, for her face was shoved in
the blond curls of the doll, not to mention quiet, as if she would get in trouble
for mentioning such a wish. "I would want a book of fairy tales..."

She was a child after all. Although it seemed that she hadn't the luxury of
tall tales and mother-goose rhymes in her life before the order.

His smirk faltered when she locked her eyes on him once again, shrinking under her gaze. "Of course people need to pretend to be Santa for the kids! He would do it himself if he could, but he's so busy making toys and stuff all year round that he doesn't have time," Kyle nodded with conviction. Eyebrows furrowed, he wondered what kind of parents the little girl had to deal with. "What's the fun without them? Or do they think fun is stupid, too?"

He felt a small surge of pride as she displayed some kind of emotion that he couldn't name, scowling as it disappeared a second later. Just barely hearing her reply, Kyle refused to go closer once the doll was up in front of her face again, sliding a few inches away. "How about this, miss Samantha? If I tell Santa that you want a book of fairy tales for Christmas, and you get one, then you have to admit that I'm right about him existing," he said with a sly grin, putting out a hand to shake far to the right of the doll.

"My parents thought it a waste of time for play pretend and stories... I should
be inside studying, preparing for the world." She frowned again, staring up at
him, before eying his hand. "How do I know it was him, and not you?" She
frowned a bit more before looking back up at the tree, back at the nutcracker.

"Your parents are a couple of stiffs, eh?" he questioned, not expecting a response, "Listen, as great as preparing for the world and yadda yadda is, sometimes you'll find that no matter how much you study, you're still never going to be ready when life gives you oranges." It was beyond obvious that studying had been low on Kyle's list of priorities.

He sighed in relief as she took her eyes off of him, left hanging as she tried to poke holes in his logic. "Well... because! It would say "From Santa" on the wrapping paper... and... uh... he might also get you something else you want, but never said out loud," he quickly replied, noticing her gaze on that nutcracker again.

"My Nana was nicer... She would tell me stories of
faraway lands.." Her words seemed to fade into thoughts before snapping out of it.

Her little curls bounced again as she looked back up at him before holding her
hand out. "But if he doesn't, you will have tea with Alice and me for a week, kay?"

The spaced-out look in her eyes made him grimace a bit, and he nearly raised a hand in front of her face to get her attention before she snapped out of it herself. "I'm sure you can get even more stories from the Exorcists and Finders here, now that you-," Kyle was cut off as a sudden realization hit him, causing him to frown deeply. "You... you're just visiting your parents here, right? You couldn't be a..."

The troubled look on his face turned to a wince in a second, staring the doll down as if that would get it further away from him. "The doll has to come, too, huh? Alright, it's a deal," he stated, giving her small hand a gentle shake. Kyle was determined to restore her belief, especially with the stakes so high. "Okay, let's go see Jerry in the cafeteria next. He makes the greatest food in the world!"

At the mention her parents, Kyle could see the strain on the girl's face as
she tried keeping tears back. They weren't dead- No. No such fate had
befallen them. Even though they treated her like nothing, she loved them
still; and even though she had wished to be whisked away from her
household, she missed them. The death of her Nana though a few years
earlier created a heavy burden on the child. No more pretend, no more
stories, just real life and the real world. With her Nana gone, she was forced
to act like an adult.

The tears never escaped her eyes, sniffling just once before regaining her
composure. "I'm sorry, Mister." She shifted, looking to her boots before
swishing away a wrinkle on her dress. "No- My parents are in London. I'm
here because General Klaud found me to be an Accommodator. I'm here as
an Exorcist."

Once the deal was sealed though, she followed the man towards the
cafeteria. Her travels had been long and tiring... And her stomach let out a
small grumble, to which she hoped Kyle didn't hear. How embarrassing.

The tears slowly collecting on the edges of the young girl's eyes caused the man to internally panic, trying to think of some way to cheer her up. "H-hey, don't worry... it'll be alright...," Kyle stuttered out. He would readily admit that he preferred the sadness to a complete lack of emotion, though even he could tell that it would be quite awhile before Samantha could express herself freely as she regained her composure a second later.

"Don't worry about it, kid. And you can just call me Kyle," he said with a small smile, rubbing the back of his head. His hand seemed to freeze there when she continued, revealing that she was an Exorcist as well. Clearing his throat uncomfortably while he tried to think of something to say, he started trekking toward the cafeteria with her close behind. "O-Oh! That's, ah... A very big job for someone your size...," he finally commented, adjusting his grip on her bag as they walked. If he'd thought that it was bad when he saw nine and ten year-olds with Innocence, then it was much, much worse seeing someone who looked half that age getting trained to battle the Earl's forces. "H-how old are you...?"

Kyle was oblivious to the small girl's stomach, too lost in thought to hear the gurgling as it cried out for food. He held the door open for her when she arrived, emphasizing that Jerry would make anything that she asked for. "What do you say to grabbing some grub right now?" he asked, unsure if she would want to stop and eat.

"Kyle..." She pondered the name for a bit continuing to stare at him. She didn't
say anything after that until he asked her for her age.

"I'm 6 years old." She didn't really seem to understand his concern for her age,
which gave Kyle a good idea that she probably hadn't even seen more than 3
Akuma... If any at all- Or had she and she just locked it away? This girl was
hard to read.

The mention of food gave her eyes a glisten of excitement. "He can make
anything?" Her eyes almost sparkled as she hid her face in the doll's hair once
more, almost having to stop hesrelf from running to the end of the line. Instead,
she walked normally to the end and waited her turn. What would she get?
There were so many foods...

At the very least, Kyle could say that he was starting to get used to the blank stare. "That's my name, don't wear it out! Though I'm sure you won't...," he mumbled the last part under his breath, quiet enough to keep her from hearing it. His eyes closed as he felt an uncharacteristic surge of pity for the young girl, wondering how the Order could drag a 6 year old into the fray.

Opening his eyes again, he followed the girl to the end of the line, wondering how she could be so calm about everything at such a young age. Kyle was glad to change the subject, and was even happier to see that she was reacting a bit to the idea of food. "That's right! You just tell Jerry whatever your heart desires and he'll whip it up for you in no time, guaranteed!" he stated while making elaborate gestures, as if he was trying to sell her something. Once they got up to the front, Jerry simply ignored Kyle in favor of the small girl, fawning over how cute she was.

Samantha was used to being called cute and being
fawned over. She simply told him thank you to his compliments before asking
him politely to make her a British food, Toad-In-The-Hole with Angel Delight as
the dessert. She was slightly surprised when she pulled out money to pay the
man, he rejected and looked up to Kyle, confused.

Kyle waited close by as the small girl ordered, a small scowl on his face as he was ignored. He caught the questioning look in her eyes and explained as Jerry went to prepare her food, putting in a request for a chicken sandwich while the cook was at it. "You won't have to worry about money if you eat here. All of the staff and Exorcists in the castle get to eat whatever and however much they want for free. It's kind of... payment for such a dangerous line of work?" he shrugged, a small, reassuring smile on his lips, "Just keep that on you when you travel for missions, or want to go into town."

When their orders were set on trays to take back to the tables, Kyle balanced them both with the small bag already in his hands, scanning the cafeteria. Thankfully, it seemed none of the cute nurses were dining at the moment, so his attention didn't stray from the young girl. "Where do you want to sit?"
PostPosted: Wed Jan 02, 2013 1:24 pm

With understanding eyes she nodded at him before putting the money back into
the bag which she then stored once more in her pocket, looking around at the
chattering mass. She wasn't one for large crowds, however, she withstood the
idle chatter before eying a spot by the windows, and hesitantly tugged on his
shirt. "Might we be able to sit over there?"

She shifted Alice in her grip before removing her tiny hand from the fabric of the
shirt, realizing that she should have known better than to grip it. "I'm sorry."

Kyle didn't think anything of the tug, knowing that it was simply a way for her to get his attention. He nodded down at her and started on his way, saying, "Of course! You can eat anywhere in the castle, if you want." Once he'd set the trays down, he turned his head to her and raised an eyebrow, wondering why she was apologizing.

"There's nothing to be sorry about, kid. There's no reason we can't sit by the window," Kyle answered distractedly as he set her bag on a chair next to him, misunderstanding the reason for the apology. He was already seating himself on one side of the table and taking a bite of his sandwich, which by many standards was quite rude once she was left standing there. "So what kind of weapon do you have?" he asked once his mouth was empty, knowing she would be talking less than she already had been once she started eating.
