Maia traded sticks with Dari, placing a new marshmallow on it and being more careful this time. "I never knew they got so sticky," she marveled.
When Toby left abd Dari spoke, she nodded in understanding. "We're his family now," She said, giving him a smile. "He told me once he'd marry you if he were gay." And that certainly meant Dari meant a great deal to Toby."We'll have to ask more often, then."

"We are," Dari agreed, and then suddenly laughed. Well, that was quite an odd sort of compliment. It was just the kind you'd expect from Toby. "Well. I'm flattered." Why Toby would have to be gay clearly had to do with human perceptions of gender. He was not any more male than he was female, but that was hard for some people to grasp. Besides, he was physically based upon a man.
"It's a good idea to ask. Anything you want to see or do, just ask. He doesn't like to assume when it involves his own ego." Surprisingly enough.
Toby emerged then with his guitar out of its case and sat down to begin tuning it. There would be less s'mores for him tonight, more entertainment.

Maia opened her mouth to ask what other kind of things she'd need to ask about, but closed it when Toby returned. She would ask Dari later.
"What songs do you know?" She asked.

Toby thought about it a moment, never taking his eyes off of his guitar as if it may somehow de-tune itself if he wasn't watching.
"Um. Mostly older stuff. Some country, some bluegrass, some... non-redneck stuff." He learned some modern songs if they really struck him, but mostly by rote. When you did something for as long as he had been plucking strings, tabs were a last resort. "Why, do you have a request?" He looked up to her a moment, smiling, and then turned back down to the instrument.

"I don't really know much music, besides what I've heard at HQ." Old Irish songs, yes, but Toby wouldn't know those, and they weren't particularly fun. Or at home, on Toby's ipod or when they were cleaning and he decided to play it. "You pick," she encouraged him, giving him a smile.

"Alright." Toby was not necessarily the most creative person, but he did begin to strum random chords while he thought. He settled upon a more modern tune, slow, a love song for teens and young adults and such. As promised, his voice was rather pleasant, even in the higher ranges. He seemed lost in the music, though. Dari just went about making a s'more. He had to have at least one real one.

Dari had been right, Toby had been just being modest. He had a wonderful voice. Maia sat, listening. She put two marshmallows on her stick and began toasting them. Once the song was finished, she moved off of her chair and towards Toby, holding a marshmallow near his face. "I made you one," she said.
Since he was providing the entertainment, she could provide him with marshmallows.

A smile crept over Toby's features and he opened his mouth and leaned forward. Why grab it with his hands when he could be fed? Maybe he was flirting, just a little, but what harm could it possibly do?
Back in his chair, Dari watched and smiled privately.

Maia placed the marshmallow in his mouth and ate one herself before starting on another two. She'd make him another. "Play another song," she encouraged him. "I'll make you another one."
She looked to Dari and smiled. This had been a good idea.

Toby took the marshmallow and maintained eye contact with Maia for the briefest of periods. When the selkie returned to her seat Dari shared her smile, but only subtly. Toby was observant. He might catch on and then it'd all be doomed.
The music began again, this time an older tune, still positive and bright. It wasn't likely something Maia would have heard except on the most obscure of oldies stations.

Maia didn't recognize the song, but she enjoyed it. It was a happy sort of tune. When her marshmallows were golden brown, she ate the top one and smiled. They were even better without the chocolate and graham crackers! No wonder Dari liked them so much.
When the song was finished, she gave Toby a second marshmallow. "You're really talented," she complimented him.

Toby took the treat between his teeth and shook his head. He let the mallow fall into his mouth and shook his head.
"I'm just 'experienced.' I started guitar in middle school and I'm turning seventy-five this year." Ugh, it felt so strange to say! He certainly didn't feel conventionally seventy.

"Well. Maybe they're right about practice making perfect," Maia said, giving him a smile. He was talented, and even with so many years of experience, he deserved the credit for keeping up with his hobby so long.
"You certainly don't seem so old," and it didn't matter that he was twice her age; they were immortal. She offered him another marshmallow.

"Well, thank you," Toby said with a grin, and held a hand up at the offer of a marshmallow. He was good for now, thanks. Maybe later he'd grab himself a proper s'more, or take a break.
That was how the night went, with songs and snacks and conversation until the mosquitoes started to come out in force. Toby activated a small warming device meant to keep them away, though, so they were allowed some more time to watch the starts and make sure the fire was out before heading inside to bed. Toby's first order of business was to put his guitar away, back in its case and back in the closet.

Maia had followed Toby inside; she had discovered tonight that she hated mosquitoes, and even with Toby's keep-mosquitoes-away-machine, the selkie preferred to ensure she wouldn't be bitten again. "Those things are evil," she observed. They hadn't seemed to go after Dari.
She wrapped her arms around Toby. "Thank you for playing for us," she said. "Let's do that again sometime."
