*purr* Anybody wonder why I like him so much? Nah just kidding...the artwork on the older books is aweful. Drizzt looks like he's about to die he looks so old, and I don't knwo where they got that weird golden forehead thing...

ITs a drow scull cap that is part of the armour they are wearing I guess, or an actual crown. But that would make no sense, since their culture did not actually have princes. Oligarchy through the top eight families.

Maybe the artist was too afraid to draw the neck pouch, so made up for by putting somthing around his forehead. *shrug* I would have rather seen the pouch.

Or maybe they thought he was too dark, and needed something shiny to off balance the colour scheme

I think that would have had a lot of influence. Specailly since most of the books are dark. But thena gain, it would have been more interesting to see what they could do with light and shadow than needing to "bring in" something shiney.

All art of drow from FR have that crowny thing on their heads, at least, until recently. A few picts I can't tell, usually of drizzt with his hood pulled low.

They have it because it's the same artist drawing Drizzt. At elast I'm pretty sure. I've got some of the not so new ones that don't have it.
Because the FR books have just so much detail, and tend outline anything of the drow's attire that is of importance (ie..everything) I think the artist took a wrong turn in adding it. At first it would confuse me, because I didn't know who the character was, and I was always reading for this guy with the head plate.

I never recall them menioning the head plate... and I always wondered why drizzt would keep wearing it if it had the spider emblem...

I am curious as to whether the artist even read the books...

I don't think so. Didn't the publishers used to conscript artists?
