Well, I quit SF4. The Ultra new character is just a Cammy clone.
I hate you Capcom, you lazy sobs.

I've been playing Jade Empire again, and...putting graphics aside...
Why have we gotten away from games like this?
They manage the plot so well, and knowing what happens at the end only makes the foreshadowing that much more ominous...as opposed to it being obnoxious in most other games.
Maybe this is what it means to get old? You stop seeing new things as "improvements", and only see them in a negative light...like with where Popular music is going.
Am I a codger?

I've been playing Soul Calibur 4 lately.
I love the series, but I'm dying for some more actual story content. The third one wasn't too bad, since it focused on all the interactions between characters, rather than "EVERYONE LEADS UP TO A FIGHT WITH SEIGFRIED/NIGHTMARE/THAT NEW VILLAIN NOBODY CARES ABOUT", which gets boring.
I JUST WANT MORE CUTSCENES.

I actually favored Soul Calibur 2 with it's Edge Master mode...And, also, because it was a much more solid fighting game than its later renditions.
You were also rewarded for your skill, which was nice.

I was excited to hear they were advancing time in SC 5 to focus on new characters... yet they kept Sieg, Mitsurugi, etc. Because yeah, it's basically always the same story.
Then again I haven't really played 5.
Cool character creator system, though. I feel like they should go with that. "Here's the various fighting styles/weapons. Make your own characters, make your own stories."

Then again I haven't really played 5. Cool character creator system, though. I feel like they should go with that. "Here's the various fighting styles/weapons. Make your own characters, make your own stories." The problem with V, as it was in IV, is that while Create-A-Character is a neat addition that ultimately gave the old dog a few new tricks...The developers keep making it more of a gimmick, than an actual function of the plot. To be honest, they could've built SCV around C-A-C (giving your character his/her own story, and allowing you to mix/match various techniques from established styles), and allowed the players to make the "new age" their own. Instead, you get the most awkward and annoying pair of twins I HAVE EVER SEEN...I swear, it was literally like they wanted me to climb through the screen, and beat them senseless with my bare hands. PLUS! They basically said "********" to the story elements of the game, and just provided a few still images with text to sort of give you an idea of what happened...It's pitiful! On the up-side, ring-outs aren't as easy to get...which keeps them from happening accidentally. The fighting system is as solid as it has been since SCII, as well...Though the guard mechanics are wonky to hell. Your strong guard is less effective than your weak guard, and there is seemingly no explanation as to why. gonk

Sounds like I made the right choice in avoiding the game. I love the series, but if it's going to be more of the same then I don't know if I'll go back. I'd love really any kind of fighter that had more of an RPG-like character creation and progression system. I mean, it would still be a fighter, but one with a nice, lengthy "campaign" where your character can perfect his/her style, improving their abilities and gaining new ones. But then you could of course always just challenge your friends or strangers to a good ol' 1v1 beatdown using your more personalized characters. Or maybe that's just the RPer in me. As for the guarding system, it would be interesting if it was meant to mimic the philosophy in martial arts to meet a weak force with a strong force and vice versa, but I doubt that's the case.

I liked 2 and 3, but I'm not looking all that forward to playing 5 since they took a few of my favorite characters away. Taki's my favorite, and I was really disappointed that they replaced her. Colonel Iyam A Heita You're not a real gamer... Sexist. I play other games too, and story-writing should have a high priority for games. I had my hopes up with SC III after how much I liked it, that I was expecting something similar for IV. Even though the feedback for League of Legends changing around/updating character bios to make them more closely entwined with other characters is really split down the middle, I really like the way they pair them up with all different facets of relationships. And I'm one of those people who gets a ring-out in the series, then makes a point to fall off the edge of the map myself on purpose. That extra scream just kills me every time.

It seems like it was more of an error on the part of the game devs, unfortunately. A big problem with Vidja Games nowadays is that they refuse to take a good idea, and just make it better...Instead, they take a good idea and leave it alone... Throwing in "new good ideas" to surprise their fanbase. I'll tell you what would surprise the actual s**t out of me...Taking Create-A-Character, and having it revolve around a mixture of Edgemaster (from SCII), and Tales of Souls (from SCIII)...with each story changing as you progress. Along the way, you would fight the other characters and unlock things from & for them...allowing you to supplement your preferred style accordingly for your created character. Bring in some weapon masters from around the world to fix a few of the more embarrassing goofs in their combat styles (a la Raphael), and crank their CGI department up through the roof... Give everyone a bit of what they want, without trying to rebuild the whole franchise. Take what has always worked, and fine-tune it.

I always liked to ring someone out, most often with Mitsurugi, and then switch to Relik stance (sheathed blade), or similar. Literally "concluding a battle in style". Then they removed Relik from V, and I raaaaaaaaaaaged.

Probably... but fighting games imo only need gameplay... story and cutscenes meh...they add flavor but are not necessary if you have solid gameplay. Now if you are talking about other styles of game...yeah it's equally as important.
