Not being American, the 911 thing probably hasn't impacted me as much as it has some others here. I'm in a small town in the middle of nowhere so nothing, apart from the contents of the newspaper, has really changed for me.

Does anyone feel like their way of life is vastly different from 6 years ago?

Do you think in the future people will still recall what the date is? (apart from those who have already forgotten, it seems razz ) Nobody seems to point out the anniversary of when some Canadians snuck across the border and burned the whitehouse down, and I figure that's gotta be symbolically important.

I can't remember the date of when that happened, but I think I remember a story about it....didn't the first lady of that time save one of the paintings before it burned down? O__o ...the name Dolly comes to mind...

Well, September 11th is quite significant here in Canada. It was a tragic event, and I'm not trying to diminish its devastation, but I can't help but think that while a lot of attention have been paid to the event, it's not the only tragic event to occur during the past years, or maybe even the worst. God knows what have been happening in, say, the Middle East...and stories have been leaking out about terrible actions made by American troops over there. If we remember all the tragic events in par with September 11th, then there will be too many dates to remember. sweatdrop

Nothing much has changed for me as well, but with Canada becoming more aggressive in its military endeavours (which I can't say I support) the threats to our country have definitely increased, and September 11th might just become reality over here. ><

*scuttles into thread* Hello everyone. I am new here and trying to keep up with everything. I think I got the house elf thing down. ^.^ How is everyone today? *looks* oh we're talking about 9/11? Sad day but I think they are overdoing it way to much. I mean things like this happen in the middle east daily and the people don't like to remember it to well there.

Let's just say this...I fly alot (being from California and going to school in Washington)
And it's a pain to have to be at the airport two hours before my flight leaves.
Last time I came over on a plane, I wasn't alloud to take any kind of liquids with me in my carry-ons...
no advil liquid capsels (which I usually take on plane trips because I have bad knees and they hurt on plane rides)
No bottle of watter, no lotion, no liquid lip balm (ex:blistex)
and we couldn't buy them on the other side of security and then take it on the plane either...

Then there's the fact that I got nervous flying before 9.11 ever happened.
and now every time we hit some turbulance I think about what it must have been like for those people on those planes.

I think the reason it affected everyone in America so much is that we've been a major world power in the world for a few generations now. We're not used to terrorist attacks. So we feel quite safe here, at least from things like that. I mean, the last attack on U.S. soil before 9.11 was (to the best of my knowledge) Pearl Harbor. And we went to war after that one, didn't we. I mean, I know we're pretty much constantly at war with some odd country. But this is rather personal to us. My own godfather (more like an uncle to me than anything) was going to be in the World Trade Center on the 12th. Imagine if the attack had waited a day, or if he had to come earlier. I'd be one of those thousands who were affected, wouldn't I? and I'm at the very oposite side of the country. And I could have easily seen that day just like those poor relatives of the victims. It's terrifying. We can imagine dying in a car accident, or disease, or even something like a mugging or drive-by shooting. But the idea of dying due to terrorism is just utterly terrifying to us. Then there was our reaction to the situation. We went from a country where everyone was against everyone, where you didn't trust anyone just because. And in one day we forgot all it. We waved our flags, we sang our songs, we donated all kinds of things to those poor people who lost loved ones(be it money, food, time, and some even donated their own lives to help). People who hated the president were suddenly commenting on how well he was handleing the situation. For a short while all that mattered was that everyone was affected. Even if it was just by the sight of watching people jump from those buildings. It's just a scary thing ingeneral for us. We weren't really emotionally ready for it. It affected everyone. I think 9.11's going to stick around for a good long time as a horrible day of terroism for us americans. Yeah, I almost forgot about it too, but I don't think it's the excact day that's so terrible to me. It's just the fact that it happened. I can remember being in my first period class and students were trying to sneak out to watch the news. I had no idea what was going on then, I thought they were just going to go out to get food or something. Then in my 2nd period, my teacher wrote in big red letters on the white board "America is officially under attack" I wrote it on my note book and still have that same note book at home. Then by the time my 5th period came around my teacher gave up and made us watch the news. She said this was a day that we should remember that we would always remember. And I think I will. It was scary. We had no idea what was going on, really. People kept talking about other attacks that are supposed to happen. That they would go for California next. Go for Hollywood because of it's fame, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Disneyland. Well... I have relatives in San Francisco. My big sister was living in Hollywood and was going to an acting academy half a block down the street from Grauman's Chinese Theatre where stars have always been known to put thier hand and feet prints in cement and could have easily been a target as so many other great Hollywood buildings monumnets are only a building or two away in every direction. And I live about 15 minutes away from Disneyland, have friends and family that work there, and go there quite frequently myself. When Terrorisim usually attacks places with high populations and you live in one of the most highly populated parts of the country, you get very nervous indeed. (I mean, after all, the state of New York and the state of California together make more income than the other 48 states do. If New York was a target, we had no choice but to assume we could be too)

You know the sort of strange part about the airplane attacks? Those buildings were so well-designed that, theoretically, a plane that size crashing into it would do about as much damage to it as if you poked the tip of a pencil through one of the little holes in the screen door. The hole would be a little wider, perhaps torn if you pushed it far enough and hard enough, but the screen door on a whole would be fine. And yet the towers collapsed. Perhaps something was wrong when they built them.

Dolly Madison. She stayed behind and rescued several important papers, a portrait of George Washington (which she cut from the frame in order to carry) and, I believe, their pet parrot.
It was during the War of 1812. Before this event, the place wasn't called the "White House". It was only after it was burned down and rebuilt that it was painted white to hide the burns still there, probably the ones on the foundation.

Wouldn't the pencil have to be filled with combustible fuel that would create a massive explosion (spanning several floors) and incredibley hot fires? Damage to a support column or two, combined with a giant chunk of building that would be incinerated in the initial explosion, combined with a fire tearing through ceilings and floors, and you would start losing structural integrity.

Still, the design of the building isn't that important. I noticed after the incident lots of people started questioning "if the building was built better" or "if the government had more sam-sites along the coast..." I guess it's alright to question things in hindsight so that you can stop things from happening again.... but it seemed more like it was blame than philosophical debate.
