(NB it shocked me when I saw a Nausicaa print on Da, and at the time the guild was down, so I couldn't ask your opinion, and then it happend with this pic... DO NOT bother Luc_iole with this, I'm just asking for your opinion, because I know she's a very nice girl who wouldn't do anything wrong, she reinked the pic entirely to make me happy, if she does it I'm sure it's because it's okay for everyone, I'm probably too possessive anyway, I just want your point of view ^_^)

kiriko - well, hrmm..it's only happened a couple of times w/me, but the artist askes for permission, and is willing to split profits w/me. but i think, there's some note on there that the character belongs to me or something like that.

I'm not too fond of other people making profits off of my characters, as I'm quite possessive over them too. But if they ask you and/or it's stated in their commissioning rules it's ok as long as they credit you. If not ON the piece itself (which is preferable but I don't think many artists will do that) then it should be somewhere noticeable in the description or something.
People don't really have problems with buying prints of other people's characters. I mean, an artist draws a random character, creates a basic story for them through the picture, and puts it up for prints. Well...that's their original character and other people are buying it so it makes no difference if the artist is drawing someone else's character. People will buy it. All that matters is that they like the art no matter who the character is of.

So it makes sense for them to retain rights to a piece except when otherwise agreed to. However, I do think that a lot of the prints i see on dev art, for example, don't make a lot of sense. Most of them arne't sort of neutral attractive peices or pieces that were done expressly as decorative art. So I don't really get the point of taking a pic you did of someone's character and turning it into a print. Usually they're not as stylized as art done expressly to sell, and unlike fan art or something, they don't have a familiar character to appeal either. So I guess.. I don't object that artists retain that right to a piece fundamentally, but it is really strange to make someone's personal commission into a print. Feels tacky.

Noraboo Holy crap, there is so much gorgeous art on this page! Antera, was your pic an IRL commission or gaia? It was for actual moneys. She's not doing the natural media commissions anymore, though ^_^; Just taking CG waist-up-ishes for $15/each. Edit: Regarding artists selling prints... I don't mind at all, as long as they ask, and put a "Character belongs to xyz" on it. Chieripie asked me about making prints of her Lilith entry to my first contest. At first I was a little conflicted about it, but eventually came to the above conclusion..

I don't mind if someone makes a print of my commissions....but I try to insist that on the image, is "character (c) [my real name]". 3nodding
I can't imagine I'd buy a print of someone else's character, but I suppose if you like an artist's work well enough, some might. :3
