This is what you should be seeing after clicking on Network and Internet from the Control Panel. Though I think you're in the list view so you'll want to hit Network and Sharing Center which will bring you Here. From that second screen, there's an option below to connect to a wireless network. See if your network comes up on the list or if any at all appear. BTW, what kind of laptop do you have?

Scytheress You put the ban-hammer on Conan? I was hoping to have Scythe kick his but with sheer womanly awesomeness... prolly a good idea though, now that I think more about it. Null-abilities are a little OP. And yay new computer!! Wait Conan? Ban-hammer? I'm still a noob so please explain what's going on?
