OMG clarinets! crying
My main instrument is the alto sax, and not to brag, but I have a really good tone quality and stuff when I play it.
Okay, now I'm starting to learn clarinet, and OMGWTF?! It sounds all airy and crappy and I can hardly keep in tune at all. Am I just not used to the embouchure (is it that different?) or is there an air leak in the instrument or what? It sounds like half the air I put into the horn isn't going towards moving the reed at all. whee

So keep the corners of your mouth tight so the air doesn't escape from the mouthpiece.

Aye what she said, also check to make sure all the parts are pushed in. And check the reed to see if its where it should be.

I want to play sax after playing the clarinet for 8 years XD But the embouchures are very different, mostly because of the shapes and sizes of the mouthpieces! <3 You'll get it, no problem!

Thanks, guys. whee Practice is definitely helping; slowly but surely my tone is improving. It still majorly sucks right now, though. sweatdrop
But I have another problem. I can hit some fairly high notes, but I'm having trouble with the C in the middle of the staff, on the fingering where you cover up all the main holes, not the one with the side keys. I know it's 'cause the air is coming out all the way towards the bottom of the instrument, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Usually, when I try to play it, it just comes out as a squeak. domokun
And aww, Mayu, how long has it been since you've marched? I'm gonna miss it when I graduate this year. cry

When playing the C note on the staff lines, make sure you aren't biting too hard and relax your bottom lip a bit. It'll make it easier for the reed to vibrate. This happens to the B a tone lower as well. Hope it helps and keep practicing! biggrin

Use a 3 or 3 1/2, I play on a 4 1/2, but I don't think you need to play THAT high yet.

So I found my dream clarinet, a Buffet Festival Greenline. I even got to play it. What makes it so cool is that it has an alternate Eb key on the left side, and holy Jenova that thing is useful. 3nodding
There's a setback, though...it's crazy expensive. gonk *begins saving up pennies* emo

Ooh I think I heard about those clarinets nevira biggrin ! with the Eb side key being on the side and all...
I really need a A clarinet I can't wait whee whee .
gonk I reallyyy wanna play Bali by Michael Colgrass again, we did play it in eighth grade...twas fun but hard XDD. it was a level six song so yeah ._.;...
penguin-I think what usually helps get the tone to improve and the high notes is doing long tones, especially infront of a mirror, you'll know if your covering up all the holes and if your finger positions are good, not too far and all. It also helps make the embouchure really strong plus the air flow improves :3.
I have to transpose some orch excerpts soon -_-;. Transposing on Finale is confusing, can someone explain it to me??

I like raw spaghetti noodles so i have to restrain myself from biting them domokun i think they taste like wood and its hard to play untill you break it in.

I like the taste of reeds sweatdrop well not old ones...those taste horrible!
Mm, reeds aren't always hard to break in, it really depends on the weather. If its humid, reeds that are old or broken in don't work too well as opposed to new reeds. My teacher used to complain so much about how humid it was getting last year and talking about reeds, a day before a competition my reed was just absolutely horrible [and i broke it in rahter slowly and all that]...so I took a new reed and it had a quick response and everything. ^-^; it cdould've been because I put it in water first but still =D;.
yeah...i'm just blabbing right now
