"If you want to. Dari and I usually do." Dari of course sometimes decided to forgo the graham cracker entirely, but then the general stickiness of his body due to a lack of lubrication was pretty amusing.

"I'd like that," Maia smiled. They sounded good, and she was sure having a fire with the two guys would be fun! "I bet it's amazing." She waited for the third batch of pancakes to finish, looking to Dari. "I found this website that gives you a new word to learn every day. I'll show it to you."

"Did you? I'd like to see it," Dari replied with a smile. He had learned via dictionaries and then refined just by hearing normal slang. His people had a photographic memory and after he had learned how to make the sounds it was just a matter of time.
"Alright, we're done," Toby said, "If you wanna set the table and grab the syrup we can eat." He couldn't take the plate from the oven as warm as it was, though, so he transferred the stack carefully to another.

"I'll show you after breakfast. It doesn't usually give words used in every day conversation." The selkie had been disappointed, but still, learning something new was always nice.
Maia went off to set the table, placing the plates and fetching the syrup. "Ready," she said, once she'd taken out the silverware.

Breakfast went well with the sort of joking and chat that had been expected prior to this week. Toby seemed in high spirits if not slightly subdued, slightly more... himself, really. The trip to the grocery store was even quite average for a planned fire. What was odd, though, was the final detour toward a gardening shop. Toby entered like a man with a purpose and began to look through the packets of flower seeds on display.

Maia followed Toby into the garden shop. "What are the flowers for?" Maia asked, curiously, when she reached his side. Was Toby going to plant them in the garden? They'd be beautiful.

"Life and death, fiance loved nature, brings in butterflies, so on and so forth." Toby was obviously trying to sound masculine and unaffected. He kept checking the back of seed packets, puling a little face, and putting them back.

Ah. Maia nodded in understanding, reaching for his hand. He was so brave. "Are you looking for a certain kind, what were her favorites?" She asked, When he didn't seem happy with the back of the packets.
"I like the bright yellow ones. They say Spring is here!"

Toby froze. For a moment, he was certain his heart stopped. Too much. Too close. Finally he spoke. "It's a little late for those." He picked up a packet of mixed scabiosa and pulled a face, but this time took them toward the front counter. He wasn't ready to talk about Carolyn just yet.

Something had gone wrong. Maybe shouldn't have asked. Maia looked through the flower packets while he went up to the counter. Hm. The flowers were certainly brightly colored. Maybe they'd die in the Arizona heat. Or they needed more care than Toby could give, she didn't look at the backs.
She left the packets and headed for Toby.

The exchange at the cash register was fast and Toby turned to meet Maia with a smile. He was over the little pang of heartbreak again.
"Are you going to help me plant them?" he asked. Certainly she had noticed him stop, and he didn't want her to feel bad. He doubted Maia had ever noticed the little garden he had going at the side of the house. It was almost a shrine, sans statuettes or relics. It was full of perennials and some left-over annuals from earlier in spring, and he didn't really share it with anyone.

Maia was surprised by the offer. She'd figured it was something special he did alone. "If you want me to," she said. She looked over the packet Toby had purchased. "What kind of flowers are these?" She asked. "Scabiosa?".She'd never heard of them. She didn't think She was pronouncing it properly, even.

"Yeah," he agreed with a nod, passing the packet over to Maia. "They're perennials. Sort of short-lived, but good for planting in late spring. They bring butterflies in." That and the decorative glass butterfly feeder. It made him happy to see butterflies fluttering in his little side-garden. Carolyn had always been so full of life.
"You can call them Pincushion Flowers instead."

So perennials were flowers that didn't last long? That was sad; the picture on the packet was beautiful. "Butterflies are lovely, I've seen them," they were always nice to look at. "Pincushion flowers," she echoed.
"That's easier. Are you ready to go home now?"

"Yup!" Toby said with a nod, and then paused. "Wait, no. I owe you guys lunch. Did you see anywhere you wanted to try on the way over?"
