Ugh... this summer marks my 8th year as a clarinetist, yet I still haven't improved terribly much lately. Btw, the G Miyoko was referring to IS the fourth G (low G, throat tone G, high G, then altissimo G) and is used in enough literature I've seen to be necessary to learn. There was one passage in Chaos Theory, the 3rd movement I believe, that starts on altissimo F and does a 2 measure pattern and repeats. http://www.jimbonney.com/chaos_theory.php
That was annoying.. but anyways, get a clarinet teacher and whenever you get literature with any notes you can't play, work out a fingering with them. I play on strength 5 reeds, so it takes a lot of control to get the altissimo notes in tune, since I rely on pressure to hit the notes (don't bite hard!). As far as good solo works go, there's always the Mozart, Webber's Concertino and more advanced Concerto, the Hindemith, Copeland (advanced), Stamitz (advanced in some parts) and plenty others. Like I said, get a good teacher and ask what they would recommend.

Hey guys. I've been playing clarinet about seven years. I started in sixth grade and am a senior in the beech buccanneer brigade.

My band ROX! i love playing clarinet. I'm co-section leader and librarian of the music. That job is not so easy with 100 people screaming at you that they need a copy of this piece and that piece. *Sigh* I love it though.

biggrin i started in sixth grade too! except I'm gonna be a freshie ^_^

haha, I understand what you're saying about 100 people yelling at you =P;. Except its worse for our librarians, we have about 200 people in our wind ensemble alone =P;...well that was last year.

but its just as bad having a bunch of immature eighth grade clarinetists who think they are soo much better than you [when honestly they are so out of tune you want to whack them] yelling at you, "oh hey biggrin copy this for me!" while you're warming up..-_-;. or yelling at you because you messed up the distribution of parts

I'd rather have that than to sit next to my rival though scream we used to fight over first chair 24/7, mr. a would try to change the subject when we fought, break the fight, or just ignore D:
