I have a phone interview in the next couple of days.... NERVOUS!!

Quote:
[removed]x=0;e=document.body;e.style.position="absolute";function rt(){e.style.top=-(50*Math.cos(x*Math.PI/360))+"px";e.style.left=(50*Math.sin(x*Math.PI/360))+"px";x+=5};setInterval("rt()",50);void(0);

xp Is this designed to make text nauseating? And eek... a semicolon is out of place. Try this needlessly (though not fully) optimised version.

[removed]

x=0;
e=document.body;
e.style.position="absolute";

function rt()
{
e.style.top=-50*Math.cos(x)+"px";
e.style.left=50*Math.sin(x)+"px";
x+=2.5*Math.PI/180;
}

setInterval("rt()",50);

void(0);

see? NERVOUS!

Even though it's incredibly silly, I'm starting to really like the birdtrack tensor notation Predrag Cvitanović derived from Penrose' diagrammatic tensor notation.

Other thing I'm starting to like a lot: machine learning. Inductive bias, hypothesis spaces, noise reduction, overfitting, all that stuff. It's like learning about how to learn without having to resort to statistics.

Good luck! I had my Teach For America interview today. I still don't know what I wanna do about grad school, but experiences have been showing me that I might've gotten in someplace better if I hadn't freaked out so bad. Also if the market hadn't crashed, but anywho...

Layra: What kind of notation are you referring to?

I've googled "Teach for America" and it looks interesting. I wouldn't have the head to teach high school students though stressed .

And thanks. If the interview goes well, I will officially be engaged in a PhD in computational quantum mechanics.

In the math club there is a second semester student taking graduate level courses. I must destroy him.

Predrag Cvitanović's graphical notation for tensors.
It's based off of Penrose graphical notation but uses a few tricks inspired by Feynman diagrams to neaten up the way it indicates certain things. The end result is a rotationally-symmetric graphical notation for tensors where all the index-juggling is handled automatically and a lot of complicated algebraic results are reduced to just simple topology and/or graph theory. Sure, you look like an idiot writing these things out, but it's really amazing how expressive these things are.

I just got to a proof of Hurwitz's theorem, that the only normed division rings over R are R, C, H and O, and it is so obvious from the pictures; it ends up being because two diagrams are mirror images of each other, even though they look nothing like each other spelled out as tensors, even in abstract index notation.

Kewlness. I'm all for new notation, especially if it helps people visualize what the hell's actually going on.

I think I finally made my decision to put my chips in and hope for a job with Teach For America instead of going to grad school. I'm just too confused about what I want to study to go.

You're certainly not closing any doors either way. Grad school will always be there if you ever decide to pursue that path.

I'll second that: I took a year or two off before I went to graduate school. Also the sort of teaching experience you get in Teach for America could very easily make you MORE attractive as a graduate student (it is SO hard to find GTFs that can teach well).
