It isn't that anything higher than a 3 gives you an airy sound, it is all about what strength YOU should play. Personally, a three is waay too soft for me, and my 4 gives me a nice full bodied sound. That won't be true for most players, though, most clarinetists I know play a 3 or so. Also, am I the only clarinet player out there who HATES Vandoren reeds? My entire section are loyal to Vandorens, but I just cannot stand to play on one. I'm more of a Mitchell - Lurie girl. Also, clarinet players: If you can find a My Masterpiece reed somewhere, grab it! They are truly excellent! They were a big reed company back in the day, then the CEO died, and the company kind of disappeared. Well, recently, they started selling in small amounts to a handful of dealers. My repairman gave me some to try, and I have been searching for a steady supply of them since.

I play with a 5 strength reed. I use this because it gives me the tone that I like, and I stand out with the sound that I make, because it is on the edge of distortion.

Also, I'm still in the selecting process of reeds, though I've settled (for now) on a few types... so if anyone else knows of any other good reeds (OTHER than vandoren or rico, I've tried those), then let me know! I'm going to try every type of reed that I can get my hands on, so anything will do!

If you are using a Vandoran mouthpiece then I highly reccommend Vandoran reeds. They are more expensive, but they work much better than the Rico brand. lol wink 3nodding biggrin smile razz 4laugh

I love vandorens, but I like rico jazz even more than them. I've also tried Hemke reeds, Alexander superial, and Gonzales, which are all great brands, too, but just not as common as rico or vandoren. But, as Pezhi said, the mouthpiece/reed/ligature setup is completely individual; different brands work for some people, but not for other people.

You're a rare case, indeed! lol. I only know a few people who can play on a size 2 and make it sound good, and you're probably one of them. I squeak too much on 2's, and even 2 1/2's. I have to use 3, 3 1/2, 4, and 4 1/2's to get the best sound out of my alto. But again, it's all individual.

I plays clarinet and I use size 2 1/2. I've broken them in the weirdest of ways. Once my reed got stuck on the back of my tooth and it broke and another was when I broke my mouthpiece to my clarinet and it shattered my reed along with the mouthpiece.

But again, it's all individual. xD yeah, i know...this comes from my mouthpiece setup though...all of my mouthpieces have huge tip openings...i don't think any of them drop below 0.90 xD and my jazz mouthpiece is like .97 if i remember right. so i need really thin reeds xD but i sound pretty good, if i do say so myself. i've held first sax position in jazz band for 3 solid years, going on 4, since i started in 8th grade...i started my musical career off as a clarinetist in 6th grade razz i've also been first clarinet since i started...well..i mean o.O as soon as i got a hold of the fingerings and what not..which happened pretty fast xD the biggest problem i've faced with my thin reeds is closing off in the upper register of the sax...but i've pretty much fixed that with my new sax teacher..i had been playing with a clarinet embouchure which is WAY too tight even for a size 3 1/2 - 4 reed.
