The trick to placing is advertising. You definitely want to have something in your sig and try to post in lots of different thread so you get seen by more people. Just be sure to be nice and polite and be on topic don't mention your entry.
Or if you are lazy and willing to put up with a lot of down voting you can enter sunday afternoon/night and end up in the all tab.

The Terrible Trivium I'm actually not doing that great :p Since I'm in the all tab I get a lot of votes so I've been moving around in rank a lot bouncing between 50 to dropping out of the top 100. I won't be in the winner circle unless crazy stuff happens. Xanitrix: Good luck, you might place. Things change a lot over the weekend and it's possible to move up from 40 to the top ten. Actually you get down voted so much in the all tab that most people avoid it. Like last week I entered in the afternoon on sunday hoping I was early enough to avoid the all tab this week and I'm still in it >_<

I'd don't really mind being in the all tab. My favorite part of being in the arena is getting to show off my avatars, winning is just a bonus. Being in the all tab is a great way to get seen :3
Besides this week was more a just for fun entry anyway.
Tiny details just take time to learn. A lot of it is knowing how different items layer together. I learned it by playing with my avatar all the time and looking at what other people do for new layering possibilities. Of course there always seems like there is so much more to learn, or at least to me there is xP
Also I like your current avatar, not every avatar has to have hundreds of items layered together to look good. You've got a nice stylish look at the moment.

My BFF always says about how winning is all there is, so I get stuck in that mindset sometimes. lol I try playing around with my invo, and sometimes I find something cute. But, I usually get stuck in my layer habits and dont venture too far. But there is totally always something new to learn, with every new item. O_O Aww, thank you! : ) I just love the sonata.
