"Oh." The manta visibly relaxed and dropped back down to settle on her heels before the man. The concern however was still there. "Got into a fight with Billy? It doesn't require medical attention or anything, does it? And what do you mean ripped the rest of his libs off? You tore a piece, or pieces, off of him? Must have been one hell of a fight." She grinned and gave a very soft punch to Richard's arm. "Looks like you came out a bit better for it though. Hurts that much? Did it pierce skin? Is it infected, need medical attention?"
Oh how typical of Awen and her barrage of questions.

"Hmpf. I'm fine." He was clearly not. Hung over the bathroom doorway was the shirt he had worn, a jagged bloody hole torn in the left breast. He reached up to his desk and started to pull himself up, being careful to keep his back to Awen.
On the desk was a roll of ace bandages and about five fasteners.

Awen crossed her arms and stood back up watching Richard. "Then what is it?" Her tone shifted to be a little less gentle and a little more tired. "Honestly Richard, I'm trying to help you, why push me away like this? You know I'm here for you, so damnit, stop being such a stubborn old man already."

Richard drew himself up to his full height, his back to Awen. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Damnit! There was simply no way to save face in this situation. It wasn't right to take it out on her but if he didn't scare her away. Growling with frustration he smashed the palm of his hand down on the desk with BANG! "Alright just remember I'm an old man."

"Of course you are!" Awen replied a bit baffled but still heated none the less. "But what does that have to do with anything? Come on, guys and gals can just be friends in this day and age you know, and it's not improper or anything old fashioned like that. I mean hell, honestly I can concider you more of a grandfather to me than anything. But thankfully a grandfather without bloodline so I can tell him when he is being stupid and stubborn! I want to help you Richard, why can't you just tell me what is wrong. I'm young, I'm a woman, sure I may not understand completely but just give me a chance!"

Awen's babble was starting to make his head hurt. He bit his knuckle while he waited for the torrent of words to stop. "Well Awen, one of Billy spines got me in the chest." He turned around, revealing the mounds of flesh on his chest. Far to large for any sort of manboob. Richard looks very depressed and disturbed. "I... can't bind these anymore, it hurts too much."

Awen took a deep slow calming breath. "Is that all this is about Richard?" She shook her head. "It's not that big of a deal. You said yourself it was an awkward weight loss from the change, it'll go away with the rest by the next change probably. I know it's kind of awkward, but people will get it, stranger things have happened, if you haven't noticed."
She took a tentative step forward and her voice grew gentle. "You're still Richard. That's all that matters, eh?"

Richard bit his lip. He knew Awen was wrong, the shrinkage down below the intense sensitivity of the breasts. Moreau's last words. Still he certianly wasn't about to correct Awen or try to prove she was wrong. Rather that was the last thing he wanted to do. "Right... Thanks." Richard pulled out his chair and sat down sideways on it so not to crush his tentacles and tail. Running claws through his hair, he dredged up a smile. "Could I get you something to drink?"

"Oh, no thanks." She gave him a smile. There was something more to this than he was saying, she wasn't deaf and blind, but she would let it drop if he would. "Anyway... like I came here to say... good first issue." She desperately changed the topic to something lighter. "So, what's in store for the second?"

Richard's smile grew brighter. "Thanks for that." It had come out rather well he thought. As for the next issue Richard hrrmed and rubbed his chin. He didn't quite know yet exactly. No one had been giving him tips on what was going on. He wondered if Gaius had made any progress in figuring out the dogs. "Well lets see. Not quite sure just yet. Seth gave me some brain teasers. Jamal killed a guard and left it near the village. And oh I got my first death threat from a squirrel." Richard ticked each one off on his fingers. He looked up at Awen, "Not quite enough for another newsletter yet. Should probably start writing it this week. Not like I'm going out much."

She nodded slowly but when it came to the part about the squirrel Awen just had to laugh. "What happened? Why were you threatened?" A lot of good a squirrel would ever do to the mighty displacer beast.
It took a few moments to sink in but then it hit her. "Wait....Jamal killed a guard?" She blinked a few times staring at the old man. He couldn't have... But then Awen remembered the way he was acting when her and Richard had met him out in the jungle.

"It was a certain white squirrel with a lot of tails. She came up to me asked if I wrote the newletter and after I answered in the affirmative she slugged me." Richard rubbed his jaw a bit self consciously, his pride was still a bit sore from that one. "I got a letter threatening to sic Jamal on me shortly there after if I sulleyed her good name." Richard smirked. "Its my first letter to the editor, should be fun."
Richard looked down at his little hands when the Jamal information sunk into Awen. They fidgeted with eachother as they spoke. "Yeah... I assume it was Jamal, he had a number one carved into his forehead."

"Doesn't sound like Annie then I guess..." Her stomach churned as she looked down. And she gave herself to that man? But... it was the tiger wasn't it? It... had to be....
Looking up rather sharply Awen tried to laugh again, but it was definately forced. "Ah, sullying the good name of a white squirrel? Well I doubt Antony could sic Jamal on anyone, especially not over petty words. At least..not how he is now..."
It all ended up coming back to that man... Awen couldn't stop a cringe.

"Antony is her name? Well thats good to know." Richard chuckled. "I hadn't even learned her name. I was going to ask Billy but well that encounter got complicated. As for her ties to Jamal, I'll just stay out the jungle for now, especially after I publish that letter." He winked. "As for Jamal..." Richard face turned dour. "I don't know. He talked but there wasn't anyone there anymore. Like you were talking to an animal." If Jamal could be saved, Richard knew he wasn't up to that particular task.

"Yeah, I remember." Awen slumped over onto the table a little to rest on her elbows and sighed heavily. Her eyes haunted with unspoken questions and shattered dreams, not only concerning Jamal but many things. SHe may focus on the silver lining, but life is life and all life had it's problems and issues no matter where one was.
"Hey, Richard? What do you think of me?" A sort of abstract, out of the blue question was not as common in Awen's pattern of speech but there it came out none the less, seemingly blurted just like any other question the manta would ask.
