Lt_Brookman When facing Tyranids, use man's best friend: A tooled up Leman Russ Exterminator. Nothing says 'I hate Tyranids' more then a twin-linked autocannon toting tank with three heavy bolters and a pintle-mounted heavy stubber. We all know that the Tyranids have puny minds, not even capable of pure and common hatred. Actually, I was watching a fight between IG and Tyranids a long time ago, and the lovely thing is, he did pretty much what you said except he ran out of points and had to drop a bolter. The Tyranid Gaunts died pretty quickly.

Man my Dark Angels army that I'm building up right now is built for one thing and one thing only killing Nids. It has three Typhoons, two Whirlwinds, devastator with four plasmacannons, two dreadnoughts with plasmacannons, emperor's champion, two chaplains, for a crap load of p.weapon, and 4+ invulnerable saves. two full ten men sqauds of tac marines, w. two sergeants w. power firsts to handle any nastiies plus marines usually stike last against nids anyways, so why not make sure they go down by having to rolll twos instead on fours and fives. my tac squads come with lascannons though to tackle any large beaties b4 i get within 24 inches and than it's all bolters from there. i think i have plasma guns too in each squad. basically eveywhere there is ap 2 death and powerfists. with lotsa templates. how do you like you Nids roasted.

An Imperial Guard army needs a whole lot of thought and planning, otherwise things will go frag big time. Most people are already having trouble with a basic platoon, so a whole army is really hard for some...
An Exterminator is mostly handy against horde armies (Orks, Tyranids and IG), while a Demolisher is good for assaults and city fighting (IG can assault. And the Demolisher is one of THE best tanks for a city fight, as it comes with siege armour for no extra cost). The basic Russ is good for just about anything, especially blowing the crap out of 3+ armour save troops. It does wonders to necrons when aimed right. (Enough Ordnance and those fraggers won't be making their 'We will be back!' tests)
One weapon that is msotly overlooked has to be the mortar, it may seem puny, but it can cause pinning and is a barrage weapon. These weapons, like it or not, can do serious damage to Orks and Tyranids! Next to the grenade launcher, these two are a rarity only blessed to the Imperial Guard, storm troopers and sometimes cultists.
