Kyle, I think what Virgil meant was that Spiderman 2 and X-men 2 and 3 are all sequels of movies within the last five to six years. That gives them a slight advantage to Superman, whose last movie was what, 70s? 80s?
As for what made their "premier" movies do better than Superman...I don't know, honestly. I've a friend who refuses to go see Superman because she feels its been made too soon after Christopher Reeve's death.
Then, we can look at fanbases, too. The fanbase with the most disposable income, as I've observed, tends to be the "X-MEN ROCKS!!!!1" crowd. More into X-men, Spider-man, and Batman than Superman. You know, those "gritty" and "dark" and "mature" stories that they love so much.
Most of us here adore Superman. And I'd still say that he has a larger fanbase than the others do. But he's also got an older fanbase. A fanbase which may have to wait until another weekend, or can't afford to go right now, or just can't make the time right yet.

Barbara_Gordon Kyle, I think what Virgil meant was that Spiderman 2 and X-men 2 and 3 are all sequels of movies within the last five to six years. That gives them a slight advantage to Superman, whose last movie was what, 70s? 80s? I know that, I was pointing out that doesnt apply to their first movies. When was the last time Spider-Man or X-Men had a movie out? Ever? Quote: As for what made their "premier" movies do better than Superman...I don't know, honestly. I've a friend who refuses to go see Superman because she feels its been made too soon after Christopher Reeve's death. I never liked the movie because of its premise. However, that doesnt mean I want Superman to fail totally, especially since if it does well, they make a high-budget sequal, which has a chance of being better. I like the fact that Superman shirts are sold out at Target, and that he has like three threads in CD right now. But it just bothers me that its not doing well compared to other second-tier heroes, and I was wondering if those who saw and liked the movie knew why, thats all. 3nodding

Kyle, Spiderman and X-Men movies never competed against each other directly. Superman is competing against X3 and Pirates 2. LAWL.

Once theatre count hits X3/Superman Returns/Spider Man number, the number of theatres is largely irrelevant, unless a movie is packing folks in so hard that they have to turn them away. Which virutally no movies are these days. It simply ups the potential to bring in higher dollar amounts, but it's extremely unliely that the movie is going to pack every seat in every theatre.
I think, if anything, instant gratification detracts from a movie's box office. I remember when folks used to camp out to go to movies, and would wait in line because they HAD TO in order to see the movie that day, or that weekend. And if folks got turned away, it just made them want to see it more. Now, not so much. There's not a lot of visceral pleasure to be had at the movies these days. Tickets can be reserved weeks ahead online, so "HAVE YOU GOTTEN YOUR TICKETS YET!?!?!?1" turns into: "Got my tickets 3 weeks ago. Yawn. You gonna Fandango?"
Also, it is doing well. It's just not the biggest movie ever.

The industry in a whole considers the DVD release to be the 'turnaround' point for a movie. It's not expected to exceed it's budget and make money UNTIL it comes out on DVD. This is why dvd releases are coming so much sooner after the initial release. I've heard speculation that in the near future, we'll be having the DVD and theatre release at the same time...the reasoning being that movie viewing has become so stratified between people who wait for the dvd and people who see it in the theatre that they're almost literally becoming two different groups of people to market to.
