And mine, the Magpie.
As Fu pointed out, there are occasionally some temporaries, but I haven't had one in aaaaaaaaaaages.
Except a Lion Cub when I was small.

I think the spirit of my dog, Wiggles is around. I wonder if its possible he came into my life as a friend for a brief 3 years, and is now one of my totems as a spirit? I'm not sure but I think feel him sometimes. I just hope it isn't my imagination, we really had an abnormally close relationship. I still miss him.
A story:
For 2 weeks after his death our male cat Weasley wouldn't come into the bedroom. I noticed greatly because I was missing having all our animal sleep around me. (Wiggles by my side and the 2 cats on top of me) Ceara would come in as normal- but I even lured Weasley in with food and he wouldn't stay. I closed the door and he would sit right next to it and not go anywhere else in the room till I let him out.
2 weeks after his death we made a memory box. We got a wooden box from Michaels, decorated it and put all the things of Wiggles we wanted to keep in it. We said a prayer over it, lit some incense and placed it on top of a bookshelf in the center.
That night Weasley slept with me for the 1st time in 2 weeks. He isn't in there as often as he once was, but he will come in sometimes now.
~~~
I think my other spirit animal is the Penguin. I started collecting them about 5-6years ago, and for some reason really like them. Not sure why, I just have a strange connection to them. I am a water element though.
Kareena80 I think my other spirit animal is the Penguin. I started collecting them about 5-6years ago, and for some reason really like them. Not sure why, I just have a strange connection to them. I am a water element though. I don't know my animal/elemental connections very well, but I would say that it makes since for a water elemental to be close to penguins. They are birds sure, but they are flightless birds that do best in water. I used to think that my totem was the fox, but I am really not sure any more. I could have sworn that I had posted here already, but I can't find it. A reply to that post said that I should look into my past and see what I had an affinity for when I was a child. So now I think that it might be a bird of prey of some sort (I used to collect eagles and owls, I even wanted to be a falconer when I was little... eh, I was a weird kid).
Tortoise... At first I didn't really see it.. but over the years a lot of the virtues of my totem have seen me through some rough patches.
people can have multiple animal spirits that you can work with....there is just one that is your main power animal...that animal is the one you are born with....others you obtain as you need them throughout your life...and they stay with you from that point...but they are only there when you need them....your power animal(main one) is always there.....if that makes sense ^^;;;;
I found this book when I was googling animal totems.
Animal Totems: The Power and Prophecy of Your Animal Guides By Trish MacGregor and Millie Gemondo
Has anyone ever read this book? If so, is it good/helpful?
I think that is the one my reiki master/teacher has...if so it was pretty useful when I was looking at it...it mainly shows the attributes of each animal...what they can help with...and what it says about you for having that animal as a guide.......it is pretty thorough...however...creatures that are primarily of asian mythology aren't in there since a lot of the western world has never heard of them.....coincidentally......my main power animal is one of them -_-;;;;;.......so then I have to take into consideration the characteristics of the animals combined to make this creature(dragon, deer, unicorn and something with flame colored wings like a pheonix...and also what all legends and such are associated with it....makes it more difficult....although I do have a mythical creatures book that was written by Conway that says a little about it)
I found this on Google:
The Penguin
The penguin is an amazing animal with unusual characteristics. If you ever see one in the wild it will be hard to forget. Highly specialized for their flightless aquatic existence their binocular vision is poor. Some penguins have no binocular vision at all. A sideways stare acts as a method of focusing on threatening objects. They see better in water than on land and their sense of smell is weak.
These unique animals exude an air of properness and good manners. Gathering in groups they walk bolt upright forming several lines denoting a sense of order and purpose. They waddle with determination and focus. Those with this medicine have the same inherent abilities. If this medicine isn't fully developed call upon the penguin to help you refine and perfect these skills.
Both male and female penguins bow to one another before entering or leaving the nest. The bow is a behavior demonstrated most often in pairs. Penguins may also walk about the area while bowing. Bowing is considered to be both a form of appeasement and a tool for maintaining social bonds. Penguin medicine people are either well mannered and polite or need to learn these abilities. This bird teaches respect to all who cross its path.
The penguins striking black and white attire suggests formality. The Emperor penguin, the largest of this aquatic bird, dressed in a tuxedo looks as if its ready for a dinner party. Those with this totem are careful about their appearance and enjoy life styles related to high society. They are social and feel at ease in any type of situation. This gives them leadership qualities and denotes an air of self confidence.
Penguins are master acrobats. While swimming their movements are graceful and fluid. They twist and turn in a variety of ways then shoot high out of the water landing solidly on their feet. When traveling long distances on ice the penguin toboggans on its stomach using its fins to push it along. They have been recorded at speeds up to 25 miles an hour. The penguin teaches us how to connect with our inner rhythm, honor our body and move with agility.
Because of their association with water astral projection and out of body experiences are keynote. Their movements both in water and on land indicate an ability to glide easily from one dimension to another. Penguins have the ability to consciously go out of body. They teach those with this medicine how to embrace and understand all realms of life. Individuals with penguin totems are vivid dreamers and often receive messages through the dreamtime or in a meditative state.
The colors of the penguin are also symbolic. The color black represents the hidden or the unknown and the color white reflects the light or awakened consciousness. The merging of the hidden with the known produces a balanced state of being. Penguin teaches you how to blend, merge and balance the dark with the light.
Penguin is a powerful totem to have and helps you change your reality, move between the worlds and awaken full consciousness. If this master bird appears in your life get ready for a life altering course of mystery, intrigue and transformation. Once you have explored uncharted waters there will be no turning back. ~~~
Also I've decided that Wiggles (my recently deceased dog) is not a totem persay but more of a guardian. I do believe his spirit is present at times, though not all the time- he visits. Though I do try to have an open-mind, I never really believed in ghosts till he passed away. I believed it was possible, but was a skeptic. (Like I am with most things) An yway, I'm off topic now, but wanted to follow up on my last post abit.
