Oz felt all kinds of stupid trying to explain himself. Afterall, at a big party like that, how many of them would have known he'd arrived that day?

"No...I mean...the furry stuff...I thought it was all costume, with another costume on top sorta thing..." he said, feeling rather dense now that he said it aloud. Seriously, who wears double-costumes these days!

Eeeep! He mentioned Nita. Oz's face dropped and he physically looked flustered. Blushing wouldn't be noticed whilst he was still hot and sweaty from the workout.

"Oh god, I am so sorry about that. If I had known you were, sort of, with her, I wouldn't have chosen her," he said, in a hurry to apologise.

Gaius couldn't suppress the chuckle at Oz's reaction. It wasn't that he felt malicious, but the guy really did look embarassed about the whole thing and Gaius could even see himself in that position.

"I dunno about 'double costumes,' but don't worry, I was, uh, mistaken about Nita too." His smile turned sheepish and he arched his neck down, remembering how foolish he'd felt. "I thought I was more 'with her' than we actually were... but it's okay. We've worked things out now." Glancing up from his bent position, Gaius flashed the big guy a small smile. While he wasn't mad at the guy, it was nice to know he felt bad about the thing. "Still, thanks for the apology. Just hope you have better luck with women than I seem to!"

Should he mention Sayuri? Nope. It'd probably do more harm than good, in more ways than one. For a start, Oz didn't need anyone thinking he took advantage of girls like Sayuri. Secondly, it looked like the last thing Gaius needed to hear was how the new guy made out with a mermaid, and one that he actually knew.

"Yeah, that is rotten luck..." he said, rubbing his neck nervously. "Anyways, you're...Gre...Gar...Gaius...Gaius, right?"

Ugh, all his muscles were screaming at him now that he'd stopped working out. His shoulders and arms ached terribly.

"Yep! And, uh..." He paused in his weight-lifting and rubbed at the back of his neck sheepishly. "I'm terrible at remembering names... You're..." he frowned, thinking hard, "...Otto, right?"

Instead of continuing, Gaius figured it was a good point for a break, but then he realized as he looked around... He'd forgotten to bring his water bottle. And his legs were shakey from the workout. Looking towards Oz hopefully, he gestured towards the water cooler that sat over on the far side of the gym. "Sorry, can you, uh, get me some water? I forgot my bottle and my legs need a chance to recover..."

Oz had to laugh. It wasn't very often people got his name wrong, so it was always funny when it happened.

"Close, but not quite," he smiled. "The name's Osbourne, but people usually just call me Oz."

He followed Gaius' gesture, looking over his shoulder at the mini-fridge. With evident effort, he hauled his bulky form onto his feet, shuffling over to the mini-fridge. Donning a simple white vest and some baggy shorts, the vast grid of scars on his arms and legs were in clear view. Most notable of all was the extensive scarring on his left knee, were it even looked like a small patch of flesh was missing, leaving a small indent in his leg just above his knee.

He returned with a cool bottle of water.

"There you go," he said cheerfully.

Once more, Oz was beginning to feel settled in the company of another transformed Islander. But this disturbed him to a degree. Non-human looking beings who were very much human in soul.

Gaius winced. Not the first time he'd gotten a name wrong. "Oz. Gotcha."

Taking the bottle gratefully, Gaius uncapped it and stuck it in his mouth. He couldn't exactly just tilt it back, seeing as how his neck would get in the way of that, so his method of drinking was more a combination of tilting the bottle itself and squeezing out what water he could. Now, anyone who's seen a guy gulp anything knows how the throat bobs - imagine that on someone with a neck like a horse. That'd be what Oz got a glimpse of.

Gaius, however, was unware of these subtle 'quirks,' and sighed as he finished off half the bottle. He'd noticed Oz's scarring before, but now he gave it a closer look, raising an eyebrow at the guy. His build and general rugged appearance definitely reminded Gaius of some of the guys he'd seen in college, namely the ones in a particular sport. "You play football at all? Just wondering, since you look like the kind of guy who'd make a solid fullback. Definitely wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a tackle from you!"

Oz was almost to that comfortable state of 'oh, they're still human inside' when he noticed the rather awkward way in which Gaius was drinking. Some men were prone to worrying about their Adam's apple, and so forth...well...Gaius put all of that in perspective.

"Woah," he uttered, and then realised what he'd done, slapping a hand to his mouth seconds too late.

s**t!

He mentally cursed himself and blushed slightly in his mistake. He hoped Gaius hadn't noticed, and quickly answered the questions, keeping the subject going.

"Yeah, I was a professional rugby player, which is basically the same as American football...except we don't play with padding and protection," he said with a smirk and glint of pride, patting his thick chest.

"This kind of forced me into early retirement though," he said, pointing to the very obvious scarring on his left knee. He didn't look so proud anymore.

Luckily for Oz, Gaius heard the exclamation, but didn't connect it with anything relating to himself in his mind, and Oz was quick to divert his attention back to more interesting things. Namely, sports and the discussion of such manly things.

"Rugby?" His face held a look that spoke of mild impression. "I knew a guy who was really into following that... watched the Australian stuff an all. Closest I ever got to that was playing tackle football in the rain, back when I was in college. I think someone lost a tooth during that..." he chuckled, shaking his head. He'd never been much of a guy for sports himself, at least organized ones, but that Oz had been professional definitely raised his esteem in the horse-man's eyes. "What did that anyways?" he gestured at the messed-up knee. "Had to have been pretty nasty to end your career..."

"Hehe, I'm so thankful I've still got all my teeth. I had to sacrifice my nose though. I wasn't always this ugly," he chuckled.

He'd grown to like his nose, always telling himself that it told a story before he could speak a word. The problem with that though is that not everyone thought the same story, and he'd encountered problems in the past where people had automatically been suspicious of him because of his scars and broken nose.

"The doctor's described it as my muscles being torn apart. Said it was too much stress and physical impact," he said, a hint of sadness creeping into his tone. Oz began to shuffle his feet idly.

"They did a bit of surgery and stuff, but the muscle was never successfully repaired. I can walk and stuff, but I was forbidden from playing rugby again."
PostPosted: Sun Nov 12, 2006 3:57 pm

The mention of the nose made Gaius feel odly self-conscious. He had to resist the urge to rub his own flattened thing, that and the widened mouth the only facial 'tells' he'd had after his first change. Now they were hardly what anyone would notice first.

"Ah geeze, torn muscles? That's... ow." Gaius gave a visible wince. Pulled muscles were never fun, let alone full on tearing them.

"Well, who knows, maybe you could just say 'screw the doctors' and do a little rugby around here. After all, who's going to know, aside from the labs? Though don't go hurting yourself or anything! I wouldn't want to be responsible for encouraging that!"

Oz saw Gaius flinch and wince, a smirk curling upon his face. He loved to tell this gross-out story, and it was always good for making people feel sorry for you. It had even scored him a few ladies on occasion.

"Well, funny you should mention that - I would actually have been able to start rugby again after I'd completed all my physio. But, being a complete dumb-arse, I tried to train again too soon...and I needed more surgery," he said, comfortable now with his stupidity.

"Its my own fault really," he shrugged his broad shoulders. "But you can't dwell too much on the past. Drives you crazy."

He sighed and dodged Gaius' gaze for a moment. He knew this to be all too true, but instead of being driven crazy, Oz had been driven to drink. He smiled at Gaius' suggestion.

"Does that mean you'd be up for a game one day?" he smirked.

Gaius grinned back, knowing a challenge when he heard one. "Maaaaaybe. I bet even a couple of cripples like ourselves could be a fair match! Though it'd be fun to get some others in too..."

His ears suddenly perked up as an idea struck him. "Aha! Hey, Oz! I don't know how busy you are, but I'm actually starting some work on a construction project of sorts... A pretty big one, and I could use some help with hands and muscle. And you, well," he smirked and gestured at the guy's obvious physique, "seem to fit the bill. Would you like to help out a bit? We're trying to build an outdoor theater kind of thing... Or at least I am. Once it's done, it'd be great for doing plays and skits and performances on. And hey, not like there's much else to do around here?" he grinned knowingly.

"Hah! Sounds like a match to me," he said enthusiastically. He might have been out of the game for several years, but the competition still burned inside him.

Oz listened intently. A theatre? But what would man-beasts want with a theatre? Weren't the prey ones too busy running from the predator ones? And what about trying to escape! That Seth fellow had a plan, so why wasn't everyone thinking about it?

He scratched the nape of his neck, thinking about this. He'd been offered a chance to escape, but who knows how long that would take. And maybe helping with this could earn him some animal allies, at least people who could help of a predator was about. Despite Jamal and Ambrose's obvious human intelligence, Oz just didn't trust the whole 'animal instincts' thing.

"So you mean, like grunt work? Well, I don't see why not. You've just said yourself there's not much to do around here," he said, nodding his head. Then he patted his rotund tummy with a deep laugh. "It might help me get rid of this too."

"You'll do it then? Great!" Exuberant, Gaius clapped Oz on the shoulder. "My first worker!"

Shifting his legs around, Gaius slid to his feet, holding onto the machine for balance until he got his hands on the walking stick. His legs were getting better, but he still didn't trust himself without some kind of support.

"If you can get that rugby thing organized, drop me a note. I'm over in duplex sixty-two!"

Oz watched Gaius wobble as he stood to his feet, and almost lunged forward to catch him or sweep him up. But this wasn't Sayuri. And lifting another guy into your arms? Err, no. Things are weird enough already.

Oz stood up also.

"Duplex sixty-two, got it. If you to need to find me, I'm in duplex seventy-four. Its an upstairs one," he replied cheerfully, giving Gaius a gentle pat on the back.

"I'm glad we actually got a chance to talk, instead of watching the tiger-man singing 'I'm a little teapot' across a bonfire," he chuckled.
