The Space Cauldron Claiming a Golden Vial, please! Even though his board mates had found a way to entertain themselves, Narcissus wasn't so sure staring at that strange deck of cards was really good for anyone's mind. It was a necessary distraction, he supposed, but something about it seemed off, and he was hard-pressed to enjoy a game when something about the cards felt so uncomfortable.
He was sure they were harmless (probably).
They were only little slips of cardboard, after all (most likely).
Whatever magic this area plagued them with wasn't affected in any degree by who engaged in what silly card game (he hoped).
But just in case there was something more going on here, Narcissus had politely declined to engage in the games Rakovanite and Diesel played. When magic was a factor, you could never be too careful. No one intelligent would claim to know what to expect of being here, so if he wanted to play it safe and avoid any additional uncertainties, who could blame him? It wasn't fear, exactly, it was just a wary sense of self-preservation.
But as hours turned into days turned into weeks, and the mood continued to plummet, Narcissus wondered what exactly constituted as contributing factors to that? There were too many to list to begin with: the constantly murky sky, the foreboding sense of being trapped, the lack of stimulating activities, the inability to keep properly hygienic, the monster that ran rampant assaulting people at night.
It was far from a positive sensation.
Those were factors he had a limited influence over, but he wondered if there were things that exuded comfort (like the talismans in the trees, or the runic scrap metal some seemed to find), were there also things that exuded negativity? This world hardly needed more things to do that, but if there were objects that could make someone feel worse, they probably needed to find them. And get rid of them.
Narcissus eyed the unsuspecting deck of cards where it lay on the floor, unmoved from his board mates' most recent game before they had gone to find something else to do. It looked harmless. But if he felt uncomfortable just looking a it, he expected Rakovanite and Diesel must surely feel something when they held the cards, when they played their games, when they stared at the designs for hours.
Something wasn't right.
Something absolutely was not right.
He slid from his chair, where he'd been using an old knife to cut vegetables at the table, and meandered his way over to the pack of cards. Perhaps unsurprisingly, nothing happened as he crouched down to retrieve them besides Narcissus' own wariness spiking. Nothing moved. Nothing jumped out at him. He didn't hear anything. He didn't see anything abnormal.
Not that he'd really been expecting to. He just didn't think he'd have been surprised if something had happened.
He opened the pack and slid the cards out into his hand as his eyes fluttered quickly to the door. How close were his friends? Did he want them near in case he needed saving? Or did he want them far away in case something dreadful emerged? An especially ridiculous thought, since they played games with the cards without anything jumping out and grabbing them.
So it was just a feeling. An uncomfortable feeling.
He tapped the edge against his palm, and the first few fanned further out, showcasing a handful of designs to him. Nothing Narcissus recognized, of course. Besides one. One with a figure that almost seemed to resemble that shadows that often lurked outside their shelter. Narcissus let the joker card slide fully out of the box so that he could see the full design of the card.
It was the closest he'd been to looking at the creature. Narcissus had taken the advice not to go outside at night, so he'd never had the misfortune of seeing the creature as anything more than a distorted figure that passed by the windows. If the depiction on the card was anything true to form, though, it certainly was something monstrous, with bones poking from beneath it's skin, disproportionate limbs, and wearing the skull of some large, dead animal.
Narcissus stared as he studied it, and it was only a withering feeling in the air that made him look away.
As his eyes lifted, his breath stalled, and his heart sputtered. All of his bones locked in place, and he stood rooted to the spot. Standing before him in all of its terrifying height was the creature. It was still as a statue, but Narcissus thought he heard the rumble of movement, as if it was breathing or shifting or-
It was there only an instant, and then the next- Nothing.
The beast was gone.
Maybe it had never been there. Maybe it had been some trick of the light or of the world, trying to frighten him after he'd stared at the monster's card too long. But regardless of why, Narcissus felt for certain this deck was 'off,' and that nothing good would come of his companions staring at it and playing games with it. He understood that they were bored, but this was-
There had to be better things to do, even here. Narcissus slipped all the cards back into the pack and then scrambled to hide the deck away. They would probably be offended at him for it, but that was a risk he was willing to take.

[size-11]It felt a little bit like grave robbing, Ilmare thought as she rooted through yet another abandoned cottage. It was a feeling that she tried to shake while she was exploring. After all, whomever had lived here was clearly gone. Chances were high that they were never coming back. And really, it wasn’t as if she was sifting through their underwear or anything. She was only looking for things that might be useful in surviving. Surely the previous occupants couldn’t begrudge her that much? And it’s not like I’ve actually found anything personal either, she thought with a faint chuckle. This cottage looked about the same as all the others and she was ready to shrug it off and go back to her own little hut when she happened to glance at the table in the middle of the room and saw what looked like cards. Feeling her interest perk, the corrupt senshi moved quickly and spent a few moments simply looking at the cards without touching. It honestly looked as if someone had been playing solitaire, or maybe using the cards in a tarot spread. Eyes shifting from one side of the room to the other, Ilmare decided that she’d be forgiven for taking a moment to look at the cards. Picking them up, she examined the design on the back before flipping through the pack to look at each card. It was a little weird not seeing any numbers, but she could still sort of intuit what each card was supposed to be. For the most part, they were totally unremarkable. And then she got to the card that had to be the Joker and felt her breath stick in her throat. Instead of a silly little harlequinned man, she was looking at a monster. The monster. Even though she hadn’t gotten a clear view of the beast since arriving here, she knew what she was looking at. And it made her stomach churn. Grimacing, she moved as if to set the card down, paused and instead brought it nearly up to her nose to study. There was something about it… Ilmare couldn’t help herself. She stared at the card, soaking in every detail of the monster. After what felt like ages, she shook herself and set the card down on the table. As her eyes moved up, she gave a little shriek and scrabbled backwards. The monster was here! It was standing on the other side of the table, staring down at her! Ilmare stumbled and her eyes flickered away for a moment before flickering back to see… Nothing. The monster was gone. What the hell was going on? Was she starting to hallucinate? She wasn’t sure, but there was a sense of tight unease now that wrapped around her brain like the opposite of an anxiety blanket. Leaving the cards where they’d fallen, she hurried from the cottage. Let someone ease snoop around in there, she thought. She had zero desire to taunt and tempt the monster that haunted this place. ( Word Count = 507) The Space Cauldron Claiming 1 Henshin Pen, thank you! Sorry for the re-quote! Today was the first chance I had to do the prompt!
