Rota struck a Mother Lode again. His mine was beginning to lose the tight-fisted grip it had on its riches once more and giving Rota what he needed to be successful. He was glad it was finally looking at things from Rota's perspective again. The demon kept up his pace of mining and decimated the wall in front of him, determined to get over 20 coal before stopping. any less and the whole trip was pointless. Rota wished there were better areas for coal, somewhere where getting it was more reliable and in greater numbers, but he supposed that it was a fantasy...unless those places existed in the dungeon or on floor two. Again the looming need to progress haunted the Artisan, but he still had much to do on this floor before he was truly ready.

It had been a long time coming, but Rota was finally glad to see a mother vein once more. He hoped this one stuck around longer than the others usually did, but he had his doubts. Regardless, he was just going to enjoy this moment for what it was, and keep swinging away at the wall. He was going to bleed this vein dry. Rota's mind couldn't shake the need to advance despite every reason to stay for now. He was in familiar territory, and he still had unfinished business. The only benefits to advancing was the promise of unknown horrors trying to eat his face off and possibly better materials for crafting.

The vein actually kept pumping! Rota was pleasantly surprised. he shifted the riches as usual and remained steadfast on the task at hand. If this Vein was going to keep giving he was going to keep receiving. He maintained his pace, not feeling tired at all. He was thrilled, glad to be back in proper form with his mine. This was how things were supposed to be, and the return to form was a relief. Rota didn't think he could have taken more of that punishment.

And the vein dried up. Rota was satisfied though, he had made his personal goal and even found out new and devastating plans for his future as an Artisan. He had even more goals now than when he started this farce of a mining expedition, and he fully intended to use his skill set to execute them to the max. Rota gathered up all the materials, donned his cloak again, and grabbed Abyssian, shouldering the mighty blade as he left the mine.

((*sigh* let the smelting marathon BEGIN.))

Metalwork Arte: Masterwork Iron Ingot
1 unit iron ore and 1 unit charcoal produce 1 iron ingot, with +15 to the quality roll of each ingot
0/23 Gloomiron Ingots

22/23 Iron Ore
27/28 Coal

When Rota returned to the forge he had been using, he decided that it was time to finally buckle down and make enough Ingots to last him quite some time. He laid out all the materials he had on him at that point, and sorted out just how many ingots of iron he could make at the moment. He cracked his knuckles and decided to get to work. Rota placed an iron ingot in the smelting cup, and threw some coal into the forge hearth. He watched the fire roar up with the addition of the coal, and he kept an artful eye on the metal and squeezed the bellows only when absolutely necessary so as to allow the ore to work itself in a sense. He was in no particular rush, so he could afford to be meticulous with the smelting process. He needed a good backlog of ingots so he could do much more forging and upgrading. It was essential to helping out Alyx and any other travelers that he may come across. When the time was right, he pulled the molten ore from the forge and poured it into the casting mold and waited for it to set.

1/23 Gloomiron Ingots

Rota watched the ingot set, and did not like what he saw. It was clear that this one was going to be not very good. He quenched the ingot with much disdain. He hated a sub-par product. He set the ingot on the workbench, and got started on the next one, placing the ore in the smelting cup and coal in the hearth. His gaze continued to never waver as he watched the ore melt and using the bellows only when he felt he needed to. He didn't want to smelt impurities INTO the ore by overheating it. That would be tragic and counter productive. The ores already were impure enough for him to be helping it along. He considered what he should make first out of these ores. He had made a few weapons now, so maybe it was time to make some shields and armor. He could only make heavy armor of metal, but he could at least try to make some. Other than that were shields, which were not nearly as resource heavy. He weighed each of the options very carefully, and there were really no right answers right off the bat. Rota would have to think on it more. When the time was right, he pulled the cup from the forge and poured the liquid metal in the cast to set. he hoped this one ended up better than the last.

1d100+15 (Masterwork Ingot)
2/23 Gloomiron Ingots

20/23 Iron Ore
25/28 Coal

Rota observed the ingot and felt really good about it. It didn't seem to have any visible or substantial flaws yet. That at least meant it was better than standard. He quenched the ingot after it had set for long enough, and place the completed work with its predecessor. Rota once more placed an ore in the smelting cup and coal in the hearth. He noticed that he was better now than he was when be started. His methodology was mostly the same, but his technique had improved. He was much more willing to take his time now and do what was required to make each individual ore good rather than multitask before he had the experience to make that work. If he got better, maybe he could multitask again one day. Until then, he was content with the way things were being done now. He worked the bellows still, keeping the fire as hot as it needed to be. This was a fairly heavy workload he had given himself. 23 ingots was not an easy undertaking considering that his previous load had been 10. He had a great deal of work still cut out for him. He removed the smelting cup once more and poured the liquid iron into the mold to set. He hoped the trend of reliable ores continued. The less reforging he had to do the better.

1d100+15 (Masterwork Ingot)
3/23 Gloomiron Ingots

19/23 Iron Ore
24/28 Coal

Rota wasn't sure of the latest ingot. It seemed decent enough, but he just didn't quite know where it sat in terms of quality exactly. He decided to think about that later as he quenched the ingot in the water barrel and placed it by its two kindred. And the smelting process began anew with the next placements of iron ore and coal in their proper places. Rota had hardly made a dent in this marathon, and he was already starting to feel the tedium set in. That wasn't good. This was his art, dammit, not some mindless task. It had purpose, weight, and meaning beyond just squeezing the bellows and waiting for the ore to fully melt. There was an art to it, grand foundations for other artworks to be made from, as well as something that could be appreciated on its own merits. The art of ingots was a subtle one, but ever present. These ingots would help Rota make his masterpiece better and give Alyx a sword and shield that would hold significance beyond the surface connections. Rota pulled the liquid metal from the forge and poured it into a mold. It was only a matter of time before he was finishing up this task...just no clue on how long it would take to get there.

1d100+15 (Masterwork Ingot)
4/23 Gloomiron Ingots

18/23 Iron Ore
23/28 Coal

This was another ingot that Rota wasn't so sure about. It didn't seem to be of the best quality, but didn't seem atrocious. For how far he had come in his craft in such a short time, he still had shockingly little knowledge about things on sight unless they were at the extremes of the spectrum. That had to change eventually. He quenched the ingot once it was ready and immediately started in on the next one. The smelting cup had definitely seen a lot of use lately, and the sad thing was that it wasn't even his. As he worked the bellows on the latest combination of ore and coal, it began to sink in more and more how he needed a forge all his own that he could work in. A place where he could go and do anything related to his craft all in the same place. metalworking, weapon and armor forging, lightsmithing, leatherworking, tailoring, all of it. He needed to be able to centralize these things and be able to do what he needed to do all in one spot. The problem was that he didn't have any idea how to do that, or even where he would want it. Should it be in the gloomwood, or somewhere that was far more rich in minerals? Were there more mountainous or cavernous regions to this place that were a hotbed of minerals? An Artisan's holy land? whatever the case, if such a place DID exist, then that would be the permanent place for his forge proper. All other floors would at least have a stall that he could sell from or hire others to sell from in his stead. This was all assuming that other travelers existed in the first place. He removed the cup from the flames and poured the contents into the mold once more. Each step was one step closer to completion.

1d100+15 (Masterwork Ingot)
5/23 Gloomiron Ingots

17/23 Iron Ore
22/28 Coal

The uncertainty continued to haunt Rota. There was no telling what exact quality of ingot the current one was, it was so mediocre. Rota's wishful thinking hoped it was merely an average ingot and he was almost certain he was correct. He quenched the ingot when it came time, set it by its four others, and stayed the course of smelting. Rota, while keeping watchful eye of the temperature of the flame, wondered why he hadn't seen any travelers save for him and Alyxandeyr. He felt that there should be more people trying to tackle this challenge, but there just weren't. It felt weird to him. If the skills he was acquiring were purely for his own benefit, then why even bother thinking of the others that he could help wit these skills? He realized it was because the skills themselves lent themselves to that ideology that he had that mindset. What use was being an Artisan if you were going to make a bunch of weapons and Armor for no one? Rota refused to believe that there was no one but The Gloomking and the Demonic Artisan here in the Gloomwood. It was inconceivable that it could be a possibility. He let the molten iron go just a little longer than the others before he pulled the cup from the hearth and poured the liquid into a cast to set. He would find the other travelers...he hoped.

1d100+15 (Masterwork Ingot)
6/23 Gloomiron Ingots

16/23 Iron Ore
21/28 Coal

Rota watched the ingot very fast, and saw that it was of a very good quality right off the bat. He thanked the powers that be that he could pump out such quality product, then took the ingot and quenched it in the barrel. He placed the newest ingot with the other five and continued the smelt-a-thon. He placed the ore and the coal in their proper places and just watched the flames do their job. What if travelers WERE here, they had just gone ahead to the next floor? Rota's gut clenched at the thought. If that were true, then that would mean that his goal to have his name above every door was already a failure. It couldn't be true. Alyx was the most experienced wanderer he had seen, and even HE hadn't gone out of the Gloomwood just yet. This smelting session was putting a lot in perspective for Rota. The importance of advancing could no longer be ignored. He had to progress soon. While he still had unfinished business, he had to hurry through it. The clock was ticking. He removed the smelting cup from the hearth again, and poured its contents into the casting mold. Rota knew that he could do this, he just had to stay strong and press on.

1d100+15 (Masterwork Ingot)
7/23 Gloomiron Ingots

15/23 Iron Ore
20/28 Coal

Rota observed the setting of the latest creation, and he could tell that it was a decent quality ingot again. His luck was with him more here than in his mine, evidently. He quenched the ingot, and proceeded to place it by the other 6. The smelting continued as he placed the next Ore/coal combo in their spots. It was now that Rota wondered where the dungeon was. In legend, it was said that the dungeon contained the way up through the tower, and that entrance was protected by a guardian. No one knew how strong it was, save for the fact that no one had ever passed it. That was generally where legends stopped, but some suggested that there were many floors above the door that the guardian kept protected. Rota rationalized, as he squeezed the bellows to maintain heat on the ore, that anything higher than that guardian would be stronger than it. These were not good thoughts, but it was not unreasonable to expect that. If nothing got stronger, then everyone would have made it to the top of the tower. Rota pulled the cup from the flames and poured it on the cast again. He only hoped that he would be able to contend with the dungeon.

1d100+15 (Masterwork Ingot)
8/23 Gloomiron Ingots

14/23 Iron Ore
19/28 Coal

After two seemingly good ingots, Rota was bound to make one that was average seeming. At least it's average. He quenched the ingot in the water barrel as the others had before it, and placed it with the other seven. Only 15 to go...Damn this was going to take a while. He got himself ready for the next one, placing the ore and coal in their proper locations. This was one of the more arduous tasks that Rota had put himself through lately. While it was his art and he enjoyed it, this was a marathon of 23 ingots in a row; an unprecedented number so far. This was not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination, and he would not be surprised if this alone took the energy out of him like the forging of Abyssian had. Rota had brought this task upon himself, and subsequently that was the only person he could blame for this. He still kept a keen eye on the smelting cup, so as to use the bellows to their peak efficacy. Rota wondered where the lair of The Figure was in the whole grand scheme of things. That field of white had to be SOMEWHERE, otherwise The Figure wouldn't have said that he wasn't supposed to be there YET. There had to be a way to get there, and Rota would find it. He removed the cup from the forge when it was time and poured the contents into the mold to set. He had been having a decent track record with this process. He hoped it continued.

1d100+15 (Masterwork Ingot)
9/23 Gloomiron Ingots

13/23 Iron Ore
18/28 Coal

Yet another that Rota was unsure of. The ingot seemed like it would be average, but it was hard to tell. Regardless, he quenched the ingot, and placed it with the other eight. He proceeded to place yet another ore in the cup and another set of coals in the forge. If this were any other session, this would be his final ingot, but instead this was only the nearly halfway point. He shook his head as he worked the bellows, keeping focused on his task. He would never put himself through this much labor again. This was too much at one time. Maybe if he got skilled enough then he could do this easier, but for right now this was a bad idea. He regretted the decision, but he was going to stick to it. It was in his best interests to keep going with it. Sure, the task was unforgiving, but it WAS rewarding, he WAS getting really good ingots, and this was very good practice. This experience would make him a better smith, and the resulting bounty of ingots would allow him to make just about anything safely. The limiting factor was still Coal, admittedly, but he would not run shy of Ingots easily. He would have to pump just about every one of them into Abyssian To do that, and there was absolutely no guarantee that that would be the best or most viable option. Though Rota told himself that the next exceptional ingot he got would go to Alyx's sword. If two, one to his sword and one to his shield. He needed to repay his debts. He pulled the cup from the forge and poured the contents into the mold. Time would tell the quality of Alyxandeyr's gift weapons.
