He shook off the disassembled skeleton and knocked out several more to clear the path back to the necromancer. "If you're really set on it...Might want to grab its attention before it eats your cousin."

Chel shook her head and shrugged. "F'we take the necromancer down, dragon'll go down. Don't wanna be on that thing when it crashes."

She gave him a wink, because what she was really saying is my cousin is about to faceplant it and it'll be hilarious.

"Point. Let's hope it dissipates before it turns the whole place into a graveyard."

Jack slashed at the necromancer as if to make his point.

"I'm good!" Chris called as he barrel rolled away from the dragon's jaws. He looked actually gleeful for the first time since they entered the cave.

Trust being a laser pointer for a big boney dragon to put him a good mood, honestly.

Jack's slashing gave Chel a window to push through and tackle the necromancer down. He struggled, of course, but Chel was a heft weight when pressed into his backside, and she had no qualms pinning his clothing down with her bow.

"You wanna do the honors?" she asked Jack, instead distracted by the beetle flying around. She really hoped Chris didn't duck behind a tree or something. "I wanna watch him ********' eat it."

Jack glanced at the beetle as Chris yelled something happily--he didn't know, the skeletons that were leftover decided to gang up on him in a last ditch effort to protect their master. Disgruntled, he ripped several off with his free hand and whirled in one place to throw another off, dismembering the minions methodically until he was free again.

"My pleasure," he said as he buried the zweihander into the reaper and twisted.

The reaper let out a short, gagged noise and then nothing at all. Chel was thankful there weren't guts and gore all over the place; the reaper dissipated almost instantly and the skeletons clinging to Jack's legs followed shortly after. The dragon slowly tore apart, fading back into a heap of bones that should have been left alone in the first place.

More importantly, the beetle lost all life in its eyes, and the color faded from its chitinous shell. It dropped out of the sky with a dull thud, becoming a husk of its former self with Chris still on it.

Chel stood up off the now-empty ground and gave a sideways grin. She was here for this sideshow.

There was a split second where everything was fine, as if the beetle would just keep going.

But then it's wings stuttered like broken helicopter blades and it tipped forward, nose diving toward the ground. Chris's first instinct was to pull on the horn, as if that would right it and make it fly again. His second instinct was the scream like a b***h.

Had there been a soundtrack to the crash, it might have been something emotional and heartbreaking. Or probably Linkin Park.

In the end, Chris ate it so hard he went full scorpion on the ground.

Everything up to that point, from Chris' bitching to nearly drowning, to nearly being basilisk bait, was made up for in that one beautiful crash landing. Good thing he landed on his head, it was thick enough to withstand the landing he was sure.

"Go grab your prize before the big one decides to see what the commotion's about," he told Chel with a satisfied look, making his way towards Chris at a leisurely pace. Brushing the stray bangs from his eyes. Casually looking for the medkit in his backpack. Taking it all in.

Chel made a loud whoop and laughed her a** off. Everything about it was perfect. There was a part of her that was worried of course (that part of her that panicked over family never really went away), but she had an unshakable faith that Chris could take a hit that harsh, and even more so that if he was really damaged, Jack could fix him up. She trusted them.

"I want victory sex when we get home," she called out to Jack as a reminder, leaving him to kiss Chris' booboos. At this point she was almost jealous with how much time they were spending together.

The barrier was easier shrugged off than focused on. It was weak, since the necromancer had already done a number on it with his own fear, but it still had a bit to go.

So Chel whacked it with her bow. There was definitely no way that could go wrong.

The barrier pulsed outwards and for a single moment, their thoughts were connected. Not in a concrete sense, but more of a vague whisper. No memories, only the blurry sense of connectedness and understanding. For Chel it was feeling Chris' exhiliration from riding the beetle coupled with Jack's smug enjoyment of Chris' pain.

Then as quickly as it had set in, the emotions disappeared and left her hollow. The barrier was gone, and she wrapped her hands around the crumbling armor. It was shoddy as best, but Chel had seen the moon hunters repair things in worse conditions. With a few runics and intensive study, it was probably worth something. That, and she felt the impending bond of an artifact; the same that rested in her hip bag in the form of her hydra artifact.

"You guys ready to bounce?" she asked them shakily. She wasn't going to bring up the odd sensation, because it had passed so quickly that it had felt like she might have imagined it. "Feels good to get out of here without ********' runnin' for our lives or some s**t, ah?"

The headache was instant. Chris gingerly rolled himself to his back, eyes screwed shut and hands clutching his temples. The visible damage was minimal, some bumps and bruises, but all the aches and pains would suck.

"Caves are the worse I hate caves nothing good happens in caves." He cracked an eye open and glared to the side at Jack taking his sweet as time. "You're an a*****e and I hate you too. Maybe more than I hate caves."

At least he'd learned his lesson. No more flying mounts. Probably.

"Yeah let's get the ******** out of here."

His brows moved up slightly. "Don't blame me for your stupid choices," he said simply as finally he reached Chris and checked him for anything serious. When it was evident his barrier had shielded him from something threatening, Jack let him pick himself up. It was very important to be reaching for his pendant after all.

The quaver in Chel's voice had him turning his head, but there was nothing immediately disconcerting about what he saw. Maybe a lingering effect of going through the barrier? Jack glanced at what she had recovered and felt slightly disappointed--it looked barely salvageable, let alone something to be worn. But he supposed something could be created from it yet--or there better be at least, lest he take it and chuck it at the next monster they encountered.

He nodded. "Let's get out before you jinx it." The large thing they'd glimpsed earlier was still at large, but for now it wasn't their problem thankfully.

Chel nodded, hefting the armor over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes. For as much as it looked like it was worth, it might as well have been potatoes.

She joined them for a moment before pulling out her pendant. "See ya on the other side, nerds." Then she muttered the, "Deus Ex Machina" and she was gone.
