"But I would've liked to."
There was danger in that, she knew. Always was with the unknown, let alone AIs that had gained sentience. But an intelligence was an intelligence. It--She had life. Stormy felt conflicted about having to extinguish her just because she had gone rogue. Maybe that was just a weakness of emotion and sentimentality, but that was something to be expected from her at this point. She didn't work logically, not unless pressed hard; Alice's brand of chaos just happened to work within a different logical parameter.
Almost all of the strings were cut. She was starting to feel sad for an indiscernible reason.

< < You always seem to find yourself in a variety of odd situations. > >
She knew. It was part of the deal as a Hunter no doubt. Still, she hoped he would be comforted by the fact that her only thought for a weapon, beyond words, was the comforting weight of the greatsword. They really were starting to come a long way. Him more understanding. Her more violent.
With a final snip Stormy fell to the ground, struggling for breath and lightheaded. Her hair (her hair?) was plastered to her forehead with sweat, though she didn't remember it being such an exertion. Stranger, she could smell fresh bread wafting over from
the sunlit kitchen. Mami was making buttered toast like she always did on Sunday mornings. It was the only day she was most assured to be at peace; she attributed it to God, and Stormy decided to believe her so that it would keep going. Mami turned to her, tired even in the morning but smiling brightly.
"Quieres comer ahora?"
She was hungry, her stomach rumbling and aching with familiarity of what once was--or maybe, what had always been. Maybe it had been a nightmare before, but this . . . this she could accept. Stormy stepped forward and embraced her mother, ignoring the way the kitchen began to distort around them, or how the sun began to dim, or how letters from the hospital flew form the cupboard to cut away at them. She ignored it and held her mother tighter even as the flesh began to be cut away, even as blood spilled over her like a hot shower, as Mami crooned and stroked her hair, left fingernails and skin and the imprint of a kiss.
"Love you, too." And she died on cue.

Your head is fuzzy, walking down a hallway with your footsteps echoing. You are at a door, with two (eternal) figures there, speaking to you, telling you plainly what you must and mustn't do, and you resent them for the ham-fisted declarations rather than any true guidance.
"Cut the strings, break free," they say, quiet, insistent.
You look down at your hands, and instead of Syntax's blue and red there are claws, black and crystalline, wrapped around your wrists. They gleam, ever so slightly, and bring on a wave of nostalgia, of a reassurance of your purpose, and with coiled limbs you strike.

He struggled again at the bonds, but they held him firm, He flapped his wings and tried to twist himself as he might have done were he in his more flexible natural shape, but it did not have the effect that he wished it would have. He swung, uselessly in the ropes, tiring and trying to conserve his strength for further efforts.
“Please…”He whispered. “Please… I want to go back to the school, I want to wake up, I want to have a chance to mean something.”

He struggled again, twisting and swaying to try and loosen the bonds, the spider webs made fine popping sounds as something in them creaked and broke, just a little loser, but not free. He took a breath and let it out slowly, he had to be calm, he had to… he was not prey, he wasn’t.
His stomach twisted as he pondered if the other people he had met in wonderland were suffering this same strange happening, he wondered if they would make it free, or would they give up.
“Alice!” he called again, wishing that she would respond, he’d offered to remember her, he’d offered to defend her against being forgotten but, like everything else he had to offer her it amounted to so little. He wasn’t strong enough for that, but it didn’t excuse him, it didn’t mean he could give up.

He thought of the suffering they had endured, of the blood on the earth of the Wonderland dream, he thought of the fragmenting memories of being scattered, he thought about the Black door and what he had done, what they had done and set his jaw with determination. He Curled inward on himself, drawing at the strings as best he could and flapped his wings hard, they hammered the air and shook the webs in great gusts, they stirred the air as though, as though he had the great wide wings he dreamed of.
A plethora of threads broke and unraveled before he had to stop for a moment, exhausted and covered in swear, eyes hard with determination.

“if there is one thing, that I have learned.” He told the strange creature who was trying so hard to trap him here. “I learned that I am, who I need to be, even if I don’t understand what that means, I just have to do the best I can, so you should… you should remember that too. You are what you need to be, you shouldn’t get so caught up in wanting to be something else that you…hurt us. I’m sorry…”
He thrashed one last time, a wild flurry of wings and twisting in the bonds, and then…
At last, he was free.

The corridor is skinny, enough only for Wilson to walk forward. It is a plain, empty corridor, but he was still tempted to spin around, walk backwards for lengths at a time. If he imagined hard enough, if he waited long enough, maybe something interesting would appear and catch his eye. Indeed, as he spun forward again he encountered two unfamiliar figures. Well, one was unfamiliar, the other he felt more confident about his identity. He only watched them briefly before honing in on the door between them.
The hunter stiffened at the cloaked figure’s accusation. His doing? He hadn’t done anything—
The dream. The secret room. Hadn’t Alice said that? They had made her. Each word out of their mouths made him more nervous. He couldn’t understand exactly what they were alluding to. “What are you talking about?” he whispered. His brain whirred furiously, trying to piece together while at the same time she played with his mind.
Nightmares were waking in the middle of the night with your heart trying to rip out of your chest and your legs tangling together as you try to get out of bed. They were flashbacks of glassy green eyes and taunting whispers echoing relentlessly in your head. Are you strong enough? No, you are weak. You are a traitor. You’ve broken your promise. They were breathless whispers stumbling out of your lips half-formed. “No, not another one, not again—“
“Wilson.” She melts the darkness with her gentle voice. She is always forgiving, or is he twisting his memories of her. Is time distorting his perception—
And as quick it disappears, the nightmare is drowning him again.
He snapped back to reality, at least he thought it was reality. With a nod, he watched the door open and stepped inside. Wilson gave Alice a soft look. “No, Alice, you can’t,” he murmured. “You…” His voice grew soft as his eyelids grew heavy. As legs grew weak, the hunter contemplated falling to his knees and maybe resting for a moment. One moment couldn’t hurt—
Not now.
He sprang back to life with a jerk. Wilson moved an arm forward, but found it covered by thin strings that gleamed in and out of his vision. So this was how the AI had managed to grasp his conscious, his perception of reality. Once he grabbed onto his goggles, he felt the familiar weight of his weapon on his shoulders and he cut the strings with one swing of his arm. Everything had been a mix of reality and fantasy, yes, that hadn’t happened, not really—
”I was sincerely hoping you wouldn’t wake up. Then maybe you could join her.”
Wilson clenched his teeth. The grip on his pencil tightened as he tried to furiously scribble down his report. “We can’t all have what we want.” His mouth tried to form the mist trainee’s name, but he’d already lost the ability to say it without his annoyance and hate blatantly seeping through.
Condescending laughter. He felt the older man lean forward, peering over his shoulder to stare at his report.
“Wonderland, huh? Wasn’t It fun? I bet you were have one hell of a time while we were awake fighting monsters. Did you completely forget what you’ve done?”
He suddenly pushed his chair back and stood up. There was only minor satisfaction as the sudden force pushed the taller man backwards, sending him stumbling. Jaws clenched, Wilson grabbed his report and stormed out of the room. “I think you need to stop looking backwards,” he hissed.
“It looks like I’m not the only one!”

TK hummed thoughtfully when he encountered a door flanked by two different figures. They were complete strangers to him, but there was something about their aura that piqued his interest. Standing straight and tall, the skeleton crossed his arms. One hand loosely covered his mouth as he observed both of their features.
Eyes widened a fraction when the violet figure accused him of something. His thoughts flashed to the brief distortion he’d encountered while showing one of the guest students around the campus. He knew something had gone awry within the town as soon as he’d experienced the delusion. However, the boil had not the slightest clue to the root of the problem. “Is that so?”
No matter how much they explained, he could not comprehend what the two Ancients spoke of. It was a minor setback, but as he had long ago realized about this school, he would have to go along with it. Someday everything would be elucidated, but now was not the time for that. It seemed there was something more urgent to tend to.
He adjusted his coat as the door swung open, then he stepped inside.
The room contained an unknown puppet, but the outfit seemed familiar. Perhaps he had seen it somewhere in a store display or while perusing his books. “Wonderland, hm?” The skeleton sounded amused as he stepped forward, but suddenly he sunk down. It was as if something had zapped away his energy. “No, hmmm, that should not…”
His body suddenly grew warm and he felt himself stiffen. The temperature was rising too fast, almost like a fire—
Not now.
When he looked down he could see strings glimmering in and out of sight. “Of course,” he murmured. Still bending down on a single knee, he used his hands to pull away a set of webs twined around an arm.

And with each piece of thread that fluttered to the ground he could see now how much he had been manipulated. It almost vexed him to know he had been tricked and lied to this entire time. When had it even begun? Since Wonderland he thought grimly. The glow of his eyes flickered dangerously as he tore away at the strings once more.

With one final tug, TK freed himself of Alice’s clutches. He rose back to his full height, stretching out his hands to let the final strands fall to the ground as he paused, it was just another—
He turned toward the visiting students with a pleasant smile on his face. He always smiled. “If you want, we can go to the library first. Otherwise, I am more than willing to make a circuit around the campus grounds.”

It was an eerie feeling as she came to a familiar door and she stopped for a moment just outside of the room, staring at it with her cheeks puffed out. The figures nearby, she heard them but decided not to speak to them and simply moved in through the frame. Mea was tired of this, so very tired...
...She really was feeling sleepy, like her eyes were heavy.
Snapping out of it she blinked. Had she seen Alice? Was that what that was? Stay? That was the word and it made her mad. "No no no no!" Mea shook her head violently with a thrash. It was starting all over again and she stared at the ground, controlling her breathing.
In her ears she swore she heard someone far off, someone familiar and fighting just as she would. Without another word she turned her head and gave a lunch with her teeth, biting clear of most of the strings with a low growl, her ears standing on her head. Surely others were fighting, and if they could, she could.
If he did, she had to.

Though several of them had snapped she felt that she'd used a lot of energy in the attempt and as she noticed more she could only swat at them with claws, feeling a few more break as she did. It was less frantic now, she was trying to be cool and collected but she noticed several were in a position far out of her reach.
"Have to keep fighting." She muttered to herself.

It was in her sights and she looked at, poised to strike. She opened her jaw where the glittering fangs were and moved towards it...
Only to trip over it and fall on her butt. Great job.
