There was every possibility Peyton had spotted Otto first since unlike Jack she had been looking for him the moment they'd stepped into the room. Pale eyes had fallen on the trio in the corner, narrowing as Alistaire had stepped around Maebe to place himself between the two shorter hunters. Her lip curled as a gloved hand smoothed over her Cousin's chest, grip on Jack's arm tightening, but what came next was completely unexpected. So much so infact that Peyton had just stopped walking entirely, and had Jack not noticed it as well he'd have had to deal with a petite, well dressed anchor weighing him down as she stared across the room at her cousin being violated by Maebe's mancandy.

There was a sound from the girl as though she'd have liked to have said something but couldn't manage it, and could do very little but nod at Jack's suggestion that she maintain a tight leash on the hapless college boy from this night forward.

When the waiter passed she managed to grab two glasses of some paler liquid that was possibly champagne, cradling both in her hand with long stems resting between thin fingers. She held them up to Jack so he could help himself to one, and then proceeded to drain three quarters of her own glass the second she was able to. When she was finished she tore her eyes away from the train wreck that was happening in the corner and narrowed them up at the man beside her, a dubious little smile resting on full lips. "I suspect you hadn't figured that as a possible outcome when you sent him on his merry way?" Some how she managed to sound both amused and scathing.

Her grip on his arm remained steady. After a second fleeting glance towards the trio she allowed a small humor laced breath. Not quite a chuckle, but close. "I think you've succeeded where I had failed earlier," The glass raised and she took another, smaller sip. "I would be surprised if the sight of Maebe after this night didn't send him running off screaming." It was something she could drink to, and she lofted hr glass, clinking it softly against his own.

Cheers.

"Jesus Christ." Maebe was torn between being livid with rage, and a little turned on. She chose rage, because it was easier. "Alistaire, are you high?" It wasn't as if Alistaire was showing off some newly found homosexual tendencies. She didn't even care that Otto was a boy. But kissing someone without them wanting it.. this wasn't even Alistaire's style. This entire day was screwing with her head.

"Otto-" Looking at the boy was a mistake. Otto looked like he was going to cry - and Maebe was not about to be some coddling mother for him. "Oh, my, God." Literally, the worst party ever. She took Otto by the arm, and gave Alistaire a very serious look.

"You need to chill out. Like, for real. I don't even want to talk to you right now."

God, she was such a good liar.

"Come on Otto. Let's just.. come on." Now she felt compelled to take him away, but she hesitated, because it meant leaving Alistaire alone. That was what he deserved, wasn't it?

Wasn't it?

She gave Alistaire one last, quizzical and pained look, before her shoeless feet padded away, dragging Otto in tow. She didn't even collect her shoes, on the way out. Her shoes. Nothing had ever rattled Maebe enough to leave her shoes lying around.

Nothing except Alistaire.

"My hopes and dreams aren't fulfilled yet either--"

A casual whisper in Caelius's ear. Arms and hands still intimately at Caelius's waist, bathing in the pureness of his warmth.

Texts received from all of his crime accomplices, and Finn was pocketing his phone once more, grabbing for yet another glass of alcohol as yet another waiter went by, though instead of just standing there, he walked beside the taller man, following his steps directly towards the buffet room, where he could see the tall, blonde form of Jack just exiting, with his arm around a conquest for the evening, no doubt.

With a quick eye dart around to make sure Fini wasn't in the near vicinity, he sidled up to the duo, and reached out to snag the plate away from Jack's hand.

"Hello, hello!" He grinned at the both cheerfully, a happy glint in his eye and quite likely the smell of many glasses of champagne on his breath. "Lovely evening wouldn't you sa---" He looked where they were both looking, only to see a man kiss what appeared to be a young boy.

.........Interesting. He would have to keep a close eye on his child after he was born, apparently. Cradle robbers abound on the island it would seem.

He turned his attention back to the two in front of him. "Well then, why do I have a feeling you had a hand in that, Jack? Gay quota wasn't filled for the day?" He laughed, though his meaning was not of any suspicions towards Jack's sexuality, more just the assumption he had seen Rep in all of his gloriously fabulous entirety.

And then his eyes flicked to Peyton, briefly, before back to Jack. Maybe a small part of him was jealous that the man hadn't yet settled down, quite possibly the part of him that was suddenly dreading the prospect of being a father, the very thought of which was lately making him just about as nauseous as Fini was some mornings. Maybe that's why a slightly spiteful comment entered his head, and maybe the alcohol he had already consumed could have been blamed for what he said next.

"Well well, Jack. After hearing about your little frolic with Fini back in the day, I'd thought you had good taste. Now I have to wonder." Normally Finn wouldn't be so cruel, not in front of a woman, not out loud, but he was feeling rather emboldened tonight, like all of this thoughts didn't all have to stay in his head, not all of the time.

But still he smiled with warmth, not coldness. His eyes were full of amusement, and he began to laugh as though he had just told a most wonderful joke. No harm in a comment if he laughed it off immediately afterwards, right?

"I am not all-knowing," Jack drawled to Peyton, "very sorry to inform you. I don't keep track of who's a ******** queer here or not." Setting the plate down at his earliest convenience, he took several small gulps of champagne once it was offered. "Three words, sweetheart: not your problem. Your cousin needs to figure s**t out on his own, and you trying to coddle him just breeds little dramas like this. Unless that's what you get off on, in which case you're welcome."

Words, words, words. Statements created like a machine, picked at and smoothed over and disguised with the correct inflections, hand-picked for the right occasion. He didn't care who exactly was in the situation: he only cared that he had been a catalyst, that he could have a little credit. Entertainment. The night was young and the night was good to him.

Around then was when Finn decided to show up then. Jack gave him a conspiring smile at first, simply shrugging. "Enjoyed that, didn't you? I simply gave the kid some advice about being a man, and he took it to heart. And look, now he's got himself a chick. I'd call that a success--the instinct to brain bleach notwithstanding."

He had nothing much to add about the taste comment, because in all honesty that was one of the biggest questions of his life; tonight was no different. "I think that's the sound of a married man's lament I'm hearing," he replied, snickering. "Where's Big Bertha anyway? Shouldn't you go be a dutiful husband and make sure she doesn't knock someone unconscious while dancing instead of snooping into my personal choices?" He took another sip of champagne. "I'll be over to visit later anyway, honest. So, where's my tip for doing you such a huge favor?"

It didn't occur to Jack to introduce Peyton, seeing as Finn had already made his opinion clear; probably knew each other already anyhow.

There was no romantic inclination or even sexual inclination behind the kiss at all; only a strong desire to demonstrate a side of him that screamed of possessiveness and petty comebacks, Alistaire lifting a hand to wipe at his own mouth casually, fingers brushing over his lips.

Except she'd left. She'd taken ahold of the boy and she'd turned and she'd started to walk away, dragging the other one with her as though they were here on their own little happy ending date that would end in silly little romantic gestures and meaningless trivialities.

What a load of bullshit, Alistaire thought. This was followed closely by, What was I trying to prove just now?

He wasn't sure of the answer himself.

"No."

The word escaped his throat easily, slipping out between the footsteps that indicated that Alistaire had not followed Maebe's demand, nor her apparent desire to be left alone. It was just outside the door to the main room that a hand reached out, fingers wrapping around Maebe's upper arm in a vice-like grip.

"Maebe Grace Bertrand."

His voice was like ice, eyes flashing. Alistaire yanked her backwards, away from Otto, and one arm wrapped proprietorially around her waist, pressing her back against his chest. His other kept ahold of her wrist, tugging it downward so that the palm of her hand would be pushed flat against his leg. Alistaire's eyes were on Otto, narrowed and cold.

"I apologize for the display earlier," he said airily, in a tone that suggested that he was merely glossing over this fact. "But I do not appreciate being made fun of, nor do I appreciate being underestimated. That being said, she is free to make her own decisions about which bed she sleeps in at night, as do I."

His grip tightened on Maebe's wrist; still, it was loose enough that she would be able to get away if she tried. "Now if you'll please excuse us," said Alistaire calmly. "I have something I'd like to say to Maebe."

"I just want him to be safe," she said softly, almost in defeat. She knew Otto's problems were not her own, knew she coddled him a lot more then she should, but she couldn't seem to help it. The poor thing invited trouble upon himself. If his parents weren't so over protective, if he'd grown up with something resembling a back bone and self confidence, then she wouldn't have had to step in so often and come to his rescue. Now a desire to keep him safe was ingrained within the dainty Sun hunter.

She was sipping her champagne when Finn joined them, lavender eyes narrowing slightly on the pair of heels that now stood alone in the corner. Maebe had left her shoes.. Maebe had left her ******** sh-!

"Excuse me?" Her attention swiveled around to rest solely upon the young man that had joined them, grip tightening on Jack's arm, and if looks could kill he'd have dropped dead on the spot. What the ******** had she ever done to him?

It was their setting that kept her from summoning Song and pressing a blade to his throat, but the desire was strong. Strong enough that she kept very still as Jack offered up a retort. Not so much in her defense, but certainly at Finn's expense. She kept very still, because if she were to move she'd have snapped, and as much as the idea appealed to her, she knew she'd regret it later if she took to violence, or worst, screaming at the drunk that was laughing in front of them.

Otto thought he'd have to run with his tail between his legs. Run home, away from this party. He was a fool after all. This woman would laugh, this man woudl smirk. This adult world that was forever out of his reach.

He was shocked to see Maebe rush to him, looking at her in baffled disbelief. She was taking him away. Maybe just somewhere to let him off the hook without looking stupid. It didn't matter. She cared.

But Alistaire's return made him afraid. He whirled around, staring at the pair in terror. Was this happening? This seemed wrong, didn't it? His heart raced so fast it hurt. His chest tight, his brow sweating. He felt threatened. He felt in danger. Even with an apology, it seemed cold, inhuman. Otto shook despite his best attempts at remaining firm. "I-I-I wasn't m-making fun... of..." Otto mumbled, his hands fidgeting with the hem of his sweater.

"But... she..." Otto looked to Maebe. She'd made a decision on her own, right? He'd not forced her at all! "I won't. I'm scared. I'm scared for her. Let her go."

His mouth was dry, his voice shook, but he stood his ground. "You're being too rough. You could have just asked her to stay. You didn't have to grab her. Maebe? Are you sure you're okay?"

Maebe had been moving forward, and she felt disoriented as the forward momentum was disrupted by Alistaire's strong arm around her arm, and then her waist. Her steps had to follow in suit, stumbling back until she was against him. She'd just left here, and now she was back, because Alistaire was taking back his possessions. Apparently, he didn't want to share his toys with Otto anymore.

She was ready to rip out of his arms a second time, and move fast enough to stay away, when she heard her name. Not just her name, her full name. The sound of grace against Alistaire's lips froze her from the tips of her fingers to her barely exposed toes. The sound of her name was a balm, and a net. It soothed her, and entrapped her back into a world she had put herself in, of her own choice.

Here, against Alistaire, she was Maebe Grace Bertrand. And she was fabulous.

She knew she could have gotten away. And if she had, she saw - for just the briefest of moments - another choice. She saw Otto, trying to make sure she was safe. Happy. She saw things that she'd scoffed at other women for wanting. And she'd almost ran off with it. But that wasn't her world.

She'd chosen this life.

"Otto." Maebe's expression was carefully smoothed over until there was nothing there but apathy. "It's all right. I'm all right. I can take care of myself." There wasn't a shred of her normal smug hautiness in her voice, because it was important to her that he didn't think she was talking down to him. She was just answering his question. "He's right. We need to talk. You should go."

In the end, she gave him one very keen look, and the faintest smile. "Go tell Peyton you stood up for yourself. Maybe she'll stop wiping your a** all the time." Ah, and there she was.

Taani seemed to be both easy to interpret and at the same time cryptic and confusing, because he didn't get his answers about some sort of auditions but she was very obviously growing impatient. Milo's green eyes glanced up from his phone to spot the signs just as Abbi's response chimed in (in the Power Rangers ring tone, no less). And tapped in a response.

"Kala mai," He apologized again, settling his phone back into his pocket while he raised his other hand in defense. At her question, he settled that hand to rub at his cheek and wondered how to explain the word without sounding like a douche. "Aa, it's Hawaiian for woman," well to the point at least before he added in yet another nervous laugh, "but not like in a bad demeanin' way or anythin,' it's like calling a girl your brah." Would that work, he didn't know. Maybe adding in a charming smile would help? 'cause he decided to try, along with....

"You wanna go like walk around or somethin'?" He gestured towards the rest of the room. Milo wouldn't totally blame her if she decided to ditch him, though that would be disappointing.

Finn was still chuckling lightly, barely even thinking about how he had insulted the girl on Jack's arm, and just about the insult towards Jack himself. It hadn't been a nice thing to say, it really hadn't, and as he wiped away a tear from the corner of his eye, his chuckles dying down, he turned towards the younger girl. "Sorry, I didn't mean anything by it, really." He grinned, using friendly words and apologies to smooth out the wrinkles in his facade. He knew who she was. It was hard not to at least know everyone by name when you all lived together on an island, when relations were so close, when they all worked together on a daily basis. The insult had been a mistake, though despite his verbal apologies, he wasn't sorry for saying it one bit. It had actually...made him feel pretty damn good, in a way, to just say what he was thinking instead of keeping it all in. Good, but dangerous.

He made a mental note to drink a few glasses of water once he parted ways with these two. Clearly he'd had enough alcohol already.

To Jack's question, Finn had a look around behind himself, towards the nearest wall. "My beautiful wife." He wasn't going to call her anything otherwise, not out loud at least. "Just arrived a few minutes ago and I have yet to locate her." He gave a small shrug of his shoulders. "Though she should be pretty hard to miss at this point. Ready to pop any day now, I think. She keeps complaining about those...oh what are they called again. Braxin higgs? I don't know. Those fake contraction thingies." He waved his hand, which was still holding his drink, nearly spilling it over the sides, but managing instead to keep it all in the glass.

"But yes, you do that. I'm sure she'd love a visit. Anyways I should...probably find her. I sent my brother to keep her entertained and we all know Ripley isn't very entertaining." He gave them each a nod. "Have fun~"

And then he turned away to find the others.

"Infinite mana and food sounds like it would be too easy," said Gale breezily. "It'd be much more challenging to have to gather potions and level up the good ole' hard way instead of having a cheat sheet."

There was a long pause and then Gale added, with a small cough, "Erm. I mean."

(Strangely he felt like he was getting some serious Disappointed Ben vibes, and cast his parental unit a suspicious look over one shoulder.)

Lina's hand on his where it lay on her waist was somewhat reassuring, as was the warmth of her smile and the slightly stern look she turned on her mother. Gale gave Aria what he hoped was a considerate expression, shifting his feet a little. He took the offered envelope somewhat hesitantly, wondering if there was secretly a can of bear mace somehow magically hidden inside.

Except it wasn't, thank heavens; in its place was a rather nice note, actually. Gale lifted his head and gave Aria a grateful smile.

"Thanks, Mrs. R," he said, tucking the envelope into his pocket.

The possessive tendencies were something that had yet to be guided under control, though Ian had tried to teach his older brother a different concept. Still, it could have been worse; he could have been jealous and possessive, which by all means would have been a lethal combination. As it was, all Maebe had to deal with was the selfish desire to keep the things that Alistaire deemed "his..." well, his.

Otto's expression was petrified. Alistaire's smirk was faint. "I won't do anything to her that she doesn't want done," he said, and there was a note of exasperation in his voice. "You act as though I'm some monster. Maebe is perfectly capable of leaving my grasp should she choose to."

He knew what the boy was possibly inferring, and it wasn't true. Alistaire may have been a lot of things, but he had never laid a hand on the women he saw, at least not in a violent way. Otto could be assured of the same, though Alistaire did not bother to say the words aloud, finding it unnecessary to state the obvious.

"You certainly are persistent," said Alistaire calmly. "I'll give you credit for that. But I want to speak to Maebe alone."

Shiloh had a great fondness for their island home as well, and he hoped to turn it into a permanent one after he finished college. He wasn’t out entirely from beneath the thumb of his family, but the fact that he’d been recruited by a seemingly prestigious institution seemed to have mollified his parents some, though Shiloh attributed that more to the fact that he was rarely home anymore, dividing his time between school and the island. As it was, he was taking life like any typical carefree student would and enjoying it probably far, far too much.

The ball was no exception. Home for the holidays, Shiloh hadn’t seemed to notice any stumbling when Ian had asked him, far too caught up on the fact that the guy he’d admired since he was a kid was asking him to the ball. It might have been just as friends and if that were the case and Shiloh would have been fine with that but he secretly hoped for more, unable to stop his mind from plotting out all possibilities. He’d been single for a long time, a product of his obliviousness and the fact that he hadn’t really found anyone worth considering. He was a hopelessly romantic kind of guy, and he didn’t feel right being in a relationship where he could see no future.

Ian, however, was impossibly gorgeous and sweet, and his potential was undeniable. Shiloh hadn’t really considered him in that way before, at least not consciously, but now he was having a hard time not thinking about it.

“Oh, um, yeah, it really is,” Shiloh smiled, following his sweeping gaze across the hall. Maebe was here somewhere, as were his buddies from school but Ian’s voice tugged him back from his search, and he glanced up at him, still smiling.

“Thank-you. I wasn’t sure if it was too much… But you know, sometimes you just have to say what the hell, right?”

His smile widened into a grin, and he reached over to brush a bit of non-existent dirt from Ian’s shoulder.

“You look good too, very handsome.”

He was having a slight bit of trouble keeping his eyes off of Shiloh, half out of a lingering astonishment that Shiloh had actually said yes in the first place, and half because Shiloh was looking very, very nice tonight - very nice - and that made it slightly difficult to concentrate.

He'd spent most of his time on the island pining for a friend he shouldn't have; it should have just ended, but instead Ian had decided to push forward and ask, just for the hell of it.

And now here he was.

A gentle hand touched his shoulder, dragging Ian back to the present, and he turned his head to find Shiloh closer than he had expected, fingers brushing at his vest. A faint flush touched Ian's cheeks at the unexpected compliment, and he smiled, reaching out to fiddle with Shiloh's tie, straightening it properly.

"Thanks," he said, and dropped his hand away quickly. "Do you, um...want to go get a drink or something to eat? Or..."

Ian trailed off, not entirely certain where he was going with that sentence.
