And then the Sands were still. New riders fed their partners but the small Temperate egg and the truly tiny Glowing egg were silent as the grave.

It was time for intervention.

Kyrieko
She worried at her lip, trying not to fidget and give any more outward signs of concern. The remaining eggs had not moved for a full five minutes or more now, and Narisa was finally making her decision. Taking a calming and deep breath, she patted Ceph's leg and stepped around the Gold to retrieve the shovel that had been resting inconspicuously off to the side. Hefting it over her shoulder, the junior weyrwoman walked carefully towards the eggs, feeling the weight of her dragon's gaze on her.

Everything will be fine, Narisamine. Cepheith sounded confident.

Narisa hoped she was right. But she had a job to do now. And the Candidates didn't need to know that she was concerned. So she put on a bright smile for the remaining girls and boys. "Alright you lot. Most of you are familiar with this. But some of you are not." She gestured for everyone to move closer. "Listen up! When the hatchlings are free, do not approach them. They will come to you. If you are their Chosen, you'll have to help them the rest of the way. They'll be weaker than the other hatchlings."

But no less magnificent.

I didn't say they wouldn't be!

"Alright. Let's help these babies out a little!" Narisa stepped back, picking the closer of the two eggs. Moving the shovel into position, she gently placed the end against the shell, lining up her smack. Just like before. She'd done this before! Taking a deep breath, before she lost her nerve, Narisa let the shovel fly as a loud 'whack' echoed about the Sands.

The blow of the gleaming shovel sent a wave of cracks shooting across the surface of the Glowing egg. For some moments it remained motionless but then, at long last, it began to shift. After some tense moments a pale rose muzzle managed to poked out, followed by a brilliant red foot further down the shell. A second foot follow the first and the little crimson started to push her way out of her prison. After some tense moments she managed to thrust her head and shoulders out of the egg but then she stopped and lay down half in half out of her egg, clearly exhausted even now. Eyes flickering grey with weariness and red with hunger that clawed at her belly she looked up at the tight circle of candidates around her. Was hers amongst them? She needed them to be there, she hadn't the strength to walk off in search of them.

Sahar didn't really take notice of the Crimson on the sands until someone behind him gave the lad a poke in the shoulder.

Drawn out of his own mental musings for moment, he blinked before looking down at the remains of egg and....By the First Egg, was that an Atypical?! Eyes wide with shock and awe, he shuffled closer a little to get a better view of the tiny hatchling only to stop himself.

He knew so little about this dragons.
....Perhaps he had just stay back; knowing him? He'd probably only hurt the little one by doing something stupid. Then again...He looked up from time to time at the tiny creature, awed by her but at the same time...He really was not sure of the emotion. The only thing he could hope was the little one found that bit of strength to find Hers standing here.

Really the glare was uncalled for and answered with a simple polite arched brow from Niyx. She really didn't see what the big deal was honestly after all as the boy pointed out there were atypicals in the crowd. Still that didn't stop Sahar from blushing crimson. Feeling bad about embarrassing the lad Niyx frowned then gave him a soft grin and a cheerful wink. "Well I guess not knowing is understandable. Trine has become a refuge to a lot of displaced people of late." She added not wanting the young man to continue turning as red as a crimsons hide.

Speaking of crimsons with a swift crack of a mallet one brilliant beautiful baby crimson came into the world. "No need to look to the stands. Why there's one of the beauties there." Niyx crooned gently beaming at the new hatchling.

"It be fine," Vaail chuckled and paused. "Well, they are going to hatch the babies up. Come on, we are suppose to be close to the eggs when they end up busting them out." He grinned at Sahar, and moved closer to the shells, grabbing his twins arm to keep Nash close. Babies. <3

By golden egg, ity bity, tiny baby. Vaail stared at the tiny rose and red hatching, lying exhausted not even half out of the shell. Ooh, come on baby. Just a bit more. She was a gorgeous little thing. "That it, come on little crimson."

Shards. Naanash looked concern at the crimson lying in the shell, not even half out. She had hatched slow, struggling and she was going to need extra care. He mentally prepped, glancing at the buckets and back to the hatching. Yeah, it be easier to fetch the little hatching a bucket of meat if she wasn't his. That way her rider could help her out of the shell... if needed.

Orlina had eyed the remaining eggs, waiting for them to show signs of hatching, but finally she looked to Narisa. These two, she guessed, were going to be atypicals, and no mistake. Orlina had been to enough Hatchings now to get a good idea of when it was time to move to the next step.

Clearly, Narisa had thought of the same thing, however, as she hefted her shovel and gave a firm smack to the first of the unhatching pair. Everyone seemed to hold their breath-- or at least Orlina did-- as they waited to see if an atypical would come from the egg, or if this was one of the very few eggs that were lost to the life of the dud.

"Oooooh," Orlina said quietly as the Crimson was exposed, the held breath escaping her. What an interesting looking dragon! Orlina waited as she was supposed too, excitedly taking in the appearance of this newest addition to the Sands.

Poth was almost done eating, chewing her last few pieces slowly and contemplating a nap. Would she be allowed to stretch out and sleep here? It was nice and warm on these sands, even if they were a bit damp and prone to sticking to her hide.

This left Tacelon with time to look around more. He was initially puzzled when Narisa called the remaining Candidates together, until he saw the shovel in her hands. He hadn't seen this before, having spent the last hatching away from the sands, but he'd heard how atypicals needed to have their shells broken for them. At the crack of shovel on shell, he craned his neck to try and see better. But all the Candidates were clustered to close together, forming a wall between him and the egg, and he was too far. It would have been nice to be able to see what was going on.

There will be other Hatchings, ones we can watch from up on the Stands, Poth told him as she swallowed her latest bit of meat. She contemplated the next bit offered her, then shook her head and laid down on the sands instead. We will see my siblings when they come over here, she added, a bit sleepily.

The encouraging voices seemed to rouse her a little and the crimson renewed her efforts of break free. Her forefeet vanished back inside the shell and she started to push away more fragments, breathing quite hard now. Eventually however she managed it; a last pushed with her back feet broke her egg open and she was able to heave herself out to lie on the sand. Now fully exposed it was clear that she was tiny even for an atypical dragon, and even greater frailty seemed to go along with that dainty build and miniature size.

Still breathing hard she looked up again at the young woman who had spoken of her beauty and the young man who had encouraged her in her efforts to break free. Gathering the last of her strength the tiny crimson pushed herself shakily to her feet, seeming to strive for an elegant posture even as she struggled to stand at all.

By the....She was so tiny.

Sahar was, again, struck with awe. Here was this tiny creature, smaller then a hatchling green, and yet when she stood he could see the hints of elegance about her. She was strong.

Smiling gently at her, the candidate made soft sounds of encouragement towards the dragonling with his voice joining a small chorus. Still embarrassed he was, knowing so little of them...But somehow seeing the tiny one made him make a mental note to self:

Pester the candidate master for extra lessons on the Atypicals.

"Don't push yourself." Niyx murmured gently her tone tinged with worry for the little darling. She was such a dainty beautiful thing and just looking at her she couldn't help, but envy the dragons would be rider. "You're glorious just the way you are." She added beaming at the tiny crimson.

Truly tiny. Naanash looked over the small crimson a mix of pale rose and bright red and she was at least out of her shell now. He watched the small crimson shakily stand, trying to pose? Silly thing, faintly he recalled this one had been a truly confident if focus on cleanliness even within her egg. He glanced at the temperate egg. Hopefully the little one inside would be stronger than their sibling.

Awww and tiny. Were they suppose to be that tiny? She looked like a harsh touch would break her and he wasn't good with infants. Vaail pushed the thought from his mind, smiling at the tiny little crimson darling. "So gorgeous."

Zarike

Not doubt, but a hint of anxiety threaded it's way into Zarike's mind as the hatchlings dwindled and neither he or Orlina managed to Impress. Still, he met each one of her looks with a wide grin and occasionally a thumbs up. At least there was very little blood. For his first clutch on the Sands he could be thankful for a realtively good experience.

Two eggs left though. He had the sudden surprising fear that he would Impress... and Orlina wouldn't. It didn't seem fair! If he were to walk off the sands with a lifemate his first time while she had stood for so many before. Yes other candidates had stood longer, but they weren't Orlina. She was special. She deserved to Impress. He joined the crowd around the last two eggs and waited as Narisa broke the first open.

The crimson was small. So very small. She reminded him of Dorado immediately and he had to reinforce the flits orders to Stay when she responded to his thoughts. Choose Orlina! He thought. He wanted to Impress, but in these final moments, he wanted her to Impress more.

"Maybe." He whispered after slipping closer to Orlina. "Maybe we'll Impress the two Atypicals?" It didn't matter what color they were. Either of them had a shot at the crimson, and whatever lay within the dormant egg. Zarike didn't even entertain the thought that the final one might be a dud. It wasn't possible.

The tiny dragon took a wobbling step forward but then sank down on the sand again, it was not quite a collapse but it was clear that if she hadn't lain down when she had it would have become one. She had wanted to go to greet her rider but she had no strength left; it seemed that she would have to ask him to come to her.

Niyx felt her heart drop and her shoulders sag in dissapointment and pain as the rainbow eyes of the crimson were turned upon another candidate that was once more not her. Unbidden she felt tears p***k her eyes as she took one ragged breath drawing on her inner strength and straightened up. There was still one more egg. She had to be strong. She just had to. Slowly her gaze drifted to the last tiny little egg silently wishing with all her heart that it's occupant might be her long awaited companion.

Zarike

And with that... his hopes for this clutch were crushed.

Z'fer

Z'fer was very glad Calanoth had not sired this clutch. Not that he didn't like chromatics or atypicals, but what did it say about Trine's golds? Brakiath's last clutch if he had heard right was all greens, blues, and atypicals. Her daughter Cepheith hadn't done much better. One metallic among them both and that being the sterile Devith. True, there were two, now three crimsons and at least one was a breeder, but they were unreliable clutchers at best. A weyr of silver's and crimsons was not a weyr that would survive.

Ailin

If watches were a thing, Ailin would have been checking his wrist a long time ago. As it was, he was going over his most recent piece of music in his head, practicing his fingering against his thighs. The dragons, non violent for the most part, had passed him by with even less interest than previous clutches.

No one in his family had ever been a dragonrider. He wasn't even sure if the other harpers searched with him had Impressed. Maybe the 'Searchrider' who brought them wasn't what he said he was? It was possible. People lied, people hurt others for no reason but their own gain. Ailin's face screwed into a cynical grimace as the crimson made her Impression. Not to him of course. It would never be to him.

Cai

Cai glanced at Jemi. Still highly out of sorts after the strange conversation they'd just had. Dragons was a topic she could handle though. "It's hard to say... well. I've not been able to discern any patterns as of yet." The red egg had hatched a crimson though so it was possible. "either option is possible."

The crimson was so small... Cai was too far away to see closely but it made her throat catch uncomfortably. "She's smaller than Miath was..." Miath had at least shown some muscles... even if she was still more slender than her counterpart. "She looks like she's nothing but skin and bones." If the little dragon betweened after Impression... Cai didn't get her hopes up for the babies survival. She didn't say so out loud... but maybe some atypicals shouldn't be allowed to Impress. It would just ruin a perfectly good candidate.

Holy epp and there was a voice inside his head. Vaail swallowed, eyes wide as he took in the delicate crimson shading from rose blush to bright red and made a startled little squeak. Tiny. The breakable fragile dragon wanted him? Ooh shard and shells.

He moved slowly and crouched to gathered up the absolutely tiny dragon in his arms, tucking her close and what was he suppose to do with his hands now? "I don't want to break her..." he said, voice hitching slightly as he swallowed down panic. He was bonded to this amazing and fragile creature and what did he do?

Naanash snorted and coughed, swallowing laughter and approached his twin. "Should I get you a meat bucket?" He looked down at the small atypical cradled in his siblings arms and grinned as Vaail nodded dumbly, seemingly at lost and weighted down by his dragon's weight. "Alright then."

Nash shook his head, leaving the candidates for enough time to get a bucket and a knife. Poor Vaail, he never been good with infants. Okay, he was smug. He had all the reasons to be amused. Naanash snickered and grabbed a bucket and a knife as he walked back. It was almost worth the years of caring for his siblings mainly alone just to see Vaail's face.

< Vail, I am not so very delicate that you will break me.> Lanterneth replied, a wisp of amusement in her slightly voice. She gave a soft breathy noise, content to sprawl in her bondpartners lap and rest as food was fetched for them.
