For any of you with AIM, we've set up a chat room thing for and by the name 'cinders', I'll be there pretty much all the time, everybody else just stop by whenever you feel like it, hopefully yalls'll run into each other and AIM won't be a d**k about it.

Any other prefered IM systems? I'm already idling on the Rizon IRC network, and I might have a MSN account around here somewhere

I may have had too much Monster.... Prepare the laser cannons!... ooo, laser cannons... that'd be fun

I do not know how to do this. (Join the group that is)

that depends on your client, I use pidgen so I got o Converstation> Join a Chat, in anything else I can't really say, but I would hope it's easy to find.

Siber: Mechanic question here

Say you have a pokemon, and you have that pokemon expend all of it's etheric energy, or at least so much that whatever's left is basically negligible. Now you put that pokemon in an inert room for a day and don't interact with it at all during that period. When you walk back into the room, what's the state of the pokemon?

Has it naturally re-accumulated some small degree of ether?
Has the severe drain had some adverse physiological effect on the pokemon?
Is it just hungry and irritable?

Mainly I ask in terms of Roger (magnemite), who doesn't eat food for lack of a mouth (actually... does he even breath?). Normally a magnemite gets energy by absorbing electricity, presumibly it converts that into ether, and it uses the ether in place of normal food, similar to dittos, mew, and ghost types. Potentially also rock type which seem to lack any biological aspect. Partly I ask because, in the case of Magnemite, wide spread use of electricity, especially in the Americas, only goes back a few hundred years or so. Where more biological pokemon like pikachu and whatnot can eat regular food, convert that into ether, and convert that into electricity, magnemite would have to float up into storm clouds to pull in a steady charge, they could try to collect energy by clustering around powerful leaders (one of the mechanisms of a lightning strike that reaches upwards and meets up with a charge current from the cloud to form the electrical pathway) but the energy from a lightning strike is easily enough to completely fry a herd of magnemite so it'd be a big gamble if you're close enough to where it should strike to draw power, but not so close that it jumps to you and makes you into an steel plated burnt marshmallow. And even then, even in tornado alley, thunderstorms are exceedingly rare during the winter months, so electricity would be at a premium. Back in the BC that is.

What I'm saying is that it's difficult to construe the natural evolution of magnemite without the presence of widespread electrical technology, unless it can condense energy at a reasonable pace. Either ether or electricity could work but ambient static energy is really impotent and would probably leave 'organic raised' magnemite really whimpy and sickly. That said, when electrified civilization showed up in the americas magnemite population, as with any electrical type only more so I would think, would have exploded. Their lives depend rather strongly on the availability of current to draw from, and once you put up power lines or a hydroelectric dam, it's basically the same effect as when the europeans showed up and killed off all the wolves, leaving the rabbits without their natural predator to keep their population under control. So for the last couple hundred years magnemite should be a bit like rats, only useful. They'd also be unnaturally healthy compared to 'storm fed' magnemite.

About an hour and a half ago I lost track of any semblance of what my goal with this article was... Oh right.

Pokemon like magnemite, dittos, ghosts*, etc, whom don't have the ability to eat real food would require the ability to condense energy, probably etheric, from the world at large or even directly from the etheric plane, at a rate that would meet their minimum 'nutritional' requirements or as a significant nutritional supplement. So these sorts of pokemon aught'a naturally recover to some baseline over time.

That's my view of it anyways.

*Most ghost types suffer from some degree of intangibility, and often have claims that they feed on some emotion, usually fear; though it's not out right stated that they cannot eat food, I believe their digestive systems would have evolved into vestigial structures that may, like giving a big dinner to a man who hasn't eaten in weeks, actually cause harm when used.

The question remains though, for a normal food eating pokemon who presumably has had no need to evolve an etheric condenser organ, what would happen if you forced them to expend all of their energy, then refused them food?

To simplify my opinion:
What would happen to a pokémon that requires food? The simplest answer I can think of is to reference the charmander episode from the original TV series. That spunky lizard got the ever-living crap beat out of it and nearly died; it required hospitalization to recover. Likewise, I can imagine a day of starving wouldn't kill a pokémon, but it's now extremely susceptible to etheric attacks like us squishy humans. Furthermore, it has nothing to draw on, so expect an inability on its part to perform techniques requiring ether. If there is any degree of recovery, I couldn't imagine it bringing the pokémon anywhere near normalcy.

What about those that do not eat? For the original trio of ghosts (ghastly, haunter, gengar) it's stated on bulbapedia that they feed off the emotions and dreams of others, and that their most frequent method of acquisition is a big, slobbery LICK. I'm having trouble thinking of others without an evident need to digest besides the aforementioned electric ones. Diglets, maybe, but they're really friggin' mysterious creatures. For all we know they always hide them for fear of revealing grimy buckteeth.

The evolutionary WTFs: If we go with the "canon" story, they all came down a big friggin' meteor, so stick it in our history somewhere viable.

The charmander had the additional disadvantage of it being pouring rain, which I think was the reson he almost died, but otherwise it is a good parallel

Big fracking meteorite...Tunguska? I think that was the only truly enormous one in common memory...Past there, pick a crater, any crater that's not volcanic.

Anyone want to give me a link to AIM? I kind of want to try it after all these years of not being able to...

I do skype...or at least, I did, and could re-install it.

Oh Lord, we are finally back in the US! Burgers and waffle fries and English galore. Also: no jet lag, 'cuz we both completely murdered our sleep cycles prior to the trip. Don't read into that; it was the internet's fault (Hyperbole and a Half, anyone?). And our colleagues'. And a 6:40 am train's...

Anyway! Back to Cinders. I'll try to get a post up tonight, but no guarantees. I'll read up on what's happened in the actual thread and figure it out.

To answer the current question: I like the conclusions that were come to, because they're similar to what I'd already discussed/decided on. Pokémon produce ether slowly, much in the same way metabolism produces heat. If they're not getting metabolic input, they don't produce metabolic output. Without ether, a pokémon is as vulnerable as a human or mundane animal. Pokémon that don't eat food receive ether through other means - ghost pokémon feed on emotion, in general, which is vaguely ethereally charged, but more importantly is metabolized as the pokémon consumes the strength of the particular patterns of brainwaves.

A pokémon that has completely exerted its ether reserves can recharge without any extra input, but not completely, unless they have some sort of capacity to store food of some kind. Magnemites, voltorbs, etc., until the "invention" of electricity, would have localized to the plains and the poles (the plains for the thunderstorms, the poles for the magnetic influence) and used electric storms to store LOTS of energy when it came.

Does this answer the questions?

So happy to be back ^.^

Bahahahahahahahahahaha

On an unrelated note, I just made an AIM group since I cannot seem to find the one Lily made, so if you either say or send me your screen names (or cell phone numbers if you would rather text) I can add you. I already have you Lily, so you don't have to do anything.

EDIT: I'll also drop this off for your viewing pleasure. Good luck =]

Good news - I made it back from my conference in one piece and have posted in Cinders.

Bad news - I'm heading out again for a full week (leaving tomorrow for hiking in Utah).

I apologize profusely!!!

The only annoyance that I have with whatever it is you've set up is that it seems to be a sort of mailing list thing that you're always in. So say right now me and Siber started talking in there, the messages would also be sent to anyone who was joined into the group regardless of their onlineness, availability, or desire to be involved at that point. Where what I had set up is more of a chat room that you can join and leave at your leisure. There are benefits to both sides, with your thing people don't have to think about joining, it's just always there and if a conversation is going on everybody is made aware of it and given the chance to participate. But, I can see situations where it might feel more like spam.

So let's give them both a shot, whichever gets used more wins.
