Before could scarcely believe he'd hit anything at all. Usually he couldn't hit the broadside of a barn and yet here he was! Swinging his bat and grazing things, of course he was sure the others were making better damage than he was. At the moment he was a mite too busy getting the ******** out of the way and ducking between the wild swings of friendly fire @A@!!!

Jude had no issue abandoning his gun after he quickly put the safety on. For now he dropped it into his bag when he moved to get his blunt object out and then he strode forward a few steps aiming to take a swing at the monster that was before him only to end up missing and almost cracking himself in the head instead.

She hadn't noticed the creatures slowly starting towards them until it was almost too late, something she would kick herself for later.

It was only as Robert's arm when around her, pulling her forcefully back that she realized the magnitude of the situation. Creatures were closing in from everywhere, starting to circle as if the sound of their guns had set off a chain reaction to every shadow that lived in every crevice of the city. Ocean blue eyes snapped to both sides of their little group, growing to the size of saucers as she noticed how close they were, the hair at the back of her neck prickling. Fear began to bubble up in her chest again, watching as they grew closer with a rigidity she could not afford. It was like every nightmare she had ever had, the kind that, when she had woken up, there were long gashes on her shoulders where she'd scratched at herself, trying to claw away long tendrils of shadowy fingers that had begun to slither over her body.

Except now it was real. Again.

Surprisingly... she felt a wave of cold, icy calm after only a few seconds.

It had only been a few moment's pause, but by the time her mind was working again, the other students were already rushing into action, including the large boy who had pulled her away from the snatching hands that had almost grabbed her. Robert had reacted ten times faster than she had, seemingly itching for a fight. Kicking off the dirt, she moved quickly the few steps to where she had dropped her pack, reaching in to grab the bat that felt so comfortably like her mace, her eyes swiveling in a radar-like motion to take a survey of the battle. Some were doing well -- others not so much. Out of her peripheral vision, she saw the over-excited Robert swing, his bat far lighter than he had anticipated, putting far too much strength into it and hitting himself in the face not a moment later.

"Bobbie!"

Jumping over the now-useless guns, Petra lunged towards him as fast as she could, swinging at a something that was reaching for his face.

Apparently he doesn't learn too good as he swings again in much the same way and misses once more. He uttered a small grunt at his inability to swing a weapon properly. He shifted his shoulders a bit to try and loosen up his muscles - he felt way too tense to try any serious combat.

Not like he didn't have a reason to be tense; there were a lot of things that wanted him dead.

Him and his teammates. He considered them all teammates since they were all on the same side he hoped.

His next swing was an equally ineffectual connection, though one would imagine any strike that sent a head twisting on a snapped neck would do a little more to slow something down. But he was hardly surprised at the resiliency of the creatures at this point, their incessant shuddering having grown more grating than shocking. The only thing his hit managed to do was make his stomach lurch, the sinews and bones snapping against his bat much more palpable than the chunks of flesh his bullets had reduced to a fine mist. Nowhere near as satisfying, either.

Two hits, and all without a single baseball reference. Scott glared at Robert, though he doubted the dazed brute was currently cognizant enough to learn from his example. If being devoured wasn’t such a pressing concern, he might have suggested someone check the man for a concussion.

"Well, at least that will make it harder for it to chew," Scott said to Hanna without a trace of humor, lifting his bat in a defensive stance.

One mediocre swing wasn't going to cut it. They were coming in faster, now, and while she no longer felt the fear, merely a cold adrenaline pumping through her veins, it seemed Petra was not Zeta Eight in more ways than one. While she had been adept with her mace as the cold, calculating 'soldier,' her real body worked much less well. Taking a step, she swung and miss at a creature that was getting far too close to their group for comfort, feeling the moment the mace missed and only hit air, cursing at her own failure.

This wasn't some game anymore, it was learn fast or die faster!

Even as she blocked another strike, Hanna laughed at Scott's reply -- a kind of unattractive laugh actually, a little sputtery, a little spit flying, a little too much like a snort. Was this how it was to battle, really battle? Caelius had said this was training so perhaps that was what kept Hanna's knees from shaking, some inalienable belief in leadership and authority. He may have disappeared for now, but maybe this was all a test. Hanna had seen a lot of movies. She knew how this went. He'd be gone for awhile, things would start to get grim, and then he'd pop back at the last second to save them all! Right? Right?

The slam of bats against too-soft flesh all around her made Hanna wince. She was on the defensive, pushing back the approaching line, keeping her distance. What would happen if one of them touched her? Was this like a zombie movie -- one scratch and you joined them? The thought made her shudder, swinging her bat harder than before but still finding little success.

It made her feel girlish to see Scott do twice as well as her with the bat. Baseball was really a boy thing, wasn't it? Hanna didn't like to put limitations on herself because of her gender, but she was not above citing social conditioning and predisposition as the reason Scott might do better than her. It still gave her peace to know she had been better with the gun, even if he was still one-up on battle banter.

The jawless creature had a long tongue that lolled uselessly down its chin, swinging back and forth like a living tie. "I think it likes you," Hanna said to Scott, ducking suddenly to avoid a swipe.

Bix seemed slightly shy, only smirking crookedly as multiple people commented on his shooting abilities. "Thanks.." It was a mutter. he hadn't expected anyone to really notice in all the mayhem.

But they kept coming! He was briefly jealous of their 'instructor' and his magical scythe of awesomeness. Of course then he was ENRAGED at him for suddenly disappearing! He popped the safety on his gun and tucked it into the front of his pants, reaching around and fumbling a bit as he grabbed the bat out of his pack.

Close quarters combat was not his thing and even though he'd had to beat people down with his fists during their island excursion, he was not keen on getting up close and personal with the horrific monster surrounding them. He backed up , forming a tight circle with the group. One guy had knocked himself out, Before looked to be panicking (what else is new?!) and the bats were not working out as well as the guns had it seemed.

"Get back!!" he swung, barely missing the closest ghoul the pressed in on his side.

There seemed to be way too many of them but at least some of the other trainees were not. Once again he swung and just barely missed. He did say that melee combat was NOT his strong point. If he had to start physcially flailing.. he would!

Gale danced backwards as one of the creatures raked its claws in his direction, making a face. "This is so not cool," he muttered to himself. Caelius had managed to ward off several of them with one blow from that eerily glowing scythe of his, but when Gale had looked up once more their simply delightful instructor had, in fact, disappeared. Gale reached a hand up, rubbing exasperatedly at his face, but with a grunt of irritation he reached into the bag. He was disgruntled at not being able to use the gun anymore, and his disgruntlement grew the moment his fingers closed around the object in his satchel.

"What the hell? Are you freaking kidding me?"

This was said mostly to no one, considering the person Gale wanted to express his great dislike towards had vanished. Heaving a sigh, he gripped the bat tightly in his hands and leapt towards the nearest figure, swinging as hard as he could.

Most unfortunately for Gale, his aim was off and he narrowly missed the lurching creature.

"DAMN IT."

Gale was having significantly less of a good time, now that he had discarded the pistol. He had thrown it on the ground after being told to use their "blunt weapons," but now he glanced back at it with an expression of mild longing, wishing he could use that instead. He would have grabbed it again, were it not for the fact that a.) He had run out of ammo, and b.) Who knew what that Caelius dude would do if he disobeyed him?

So instead Gale settled for merely swinging the bat around as hard and fast as he could. And fortunately for him, this time he managed to slam the wooden object in his hands into the side of one of the creatures with a sickening crunch, which was both disgusting and satisfying simultaneously.

"Awww yeahhhhhh!"

Scott’s blood suddenly ran cold. The indecipherable, guttural sound of the creatures was closer than it had ever been before. It was right besides him, flecks of foul saliva accompanying its hot, blood drenched breath against his cheek. He turned to gaze into its gaping maw, to once again peer into complete darkness and accept his end. He had already died once, perhaps it was easier going the second time around. Eyes widened and filled with panic as they fell upon…

Hanna Nowicki laughing. Or at least, Scott thought it was laughing. It certainly sounded amused… whatever it was. He was relieved to see her face rather than that of a flesh hungry monstrosity, but there was a tinge of uncertainty in his expression. The girl was sharp, but how could he trust someone who made those kinds of noises? As his ear caught the nearby scraping of limbs, he twisted quickly to ward off a creature who had shuffled too close for comfort. He hardly had room to swing anymore, only able to prolong the inevitable and hope something dropped out of the sky to prevent them from succumbing to a training mission. Though if they all perished at the first sign of hardship, perhaps they weren’t really cut out as candidates in the first place.

Another of Hanna’s wry comments joined the sickening crunch of blunt objects against bones. “Laughing” and cracking jokes in the face of assured destruction. “You’ve got some really strange coping mechanisms, you know that?” He glanced at the dangling tongue, shuddering at the sight and the thought that the creature was capable of feeling anything other than a hunger for meat.

Scott shoved one of the beasts back, rewarded with a tremendous shriek as it briefly staggered away. “Though I guess curling up in a ball and crying wouldn't do much good at this point.” He sounded as if it was an option he’d take if given the chance.

The trainee's efforts had paid off, the circle of former people - corpses - collapsing to the ground, some in bits and pieces, some still dragging by a single limb, some walking even headless. And as the second wave of more complete bodies dragged themselves closer, the remaining few from the first wave hesitated, as if making a universal decision. One of the surviving reanimated bodies made a strange clicking noise, the rest suddenly following suit, turning around, to join their team behind them.

The trainees would have less than a minute before they were overwhelmed entirely.

That is, except for Gale, who was caught entirely off guard as the lead figure's back suddenly split open, skin peeling into layers of salivating teeth, a long tongue grabbing the unfortunate trainee by the foot, pulling the trainee away. It shrieked, releasing an acidic bile that burned the ground, even if Gale did not look at his leg, he would notice the smell, an acrid burning, the skin around his leg was rotting away, the infection spreading outwards in a black ring. Anyone else who dared close was assaulted by the spittle, even a droplet on their arms ate right through their skin, leaving smoldering black marks of well seasoned flesh. Human flesh.

((OOC: Boss action post!: The boss (first wave) is retreating! There is one post between now and the next for the second wave to appear.

exclaim GALE IS CAUGHT! exclaim

"GALE."

They might not had been tight on the island, but he was a Beta and he had participated in all the events up to this point. He was as much a hunter as the next person despite his age, and to see it potentially end now? Not happening. Not while she's still moving.

"HANG ON KID," The word 'kid' slipped out before she could stop it this time, and a hand reached into her bag for her gun- No, what if she missed and shot him instead? Narrowing her eyes, she rushed forward with her bat and tried to hit the thing that held her teammate captive. She felt it hit something, but let out a yell as something stung her hand, causing her to drop her weapon.

Looking down, she stared, horrified, at where the... Acid from the thing had touched her on the arm. It looked like a horrible burn... Gritting her teeth, she reached down to pick up her bat again, "THAT BETTER NOT LEAVE A SCAR."
