User ImageBeyond the barrier, a dark-haired man sat curled against the wall, staring at an untouched dish of moldy bread and a small cup of filthy water. Since his first deployment on a Learanian naval vessel had ended with disaster, he had been stranded on the southern coast, without the means nor the wherewithal to make his way back to Eyris. Some three weeks ago, he had stumbled into Arajudia, and was summarily arrested and thrown into a cell.

Three weeks without a drink.

Hazy figures flitted behind his eyes, rushing off to the shadows and vanishing before he could focus. His throat was always parched, his stomach couldn't hold anything in. He trembled in the mornings and the evenings, and sleep came with nightmarish fits. Sounds echoed in his head without source. He never spoke, or at least rarely-- when he did, he found himself accusing any listener of coming to kill him, to take his blood.

His stench was unbearably foul by now; those rare guards that would still approach him held their noses, and backed away gasping after they had delivered his daily meal. They weren't so cruel as to subject anyone to him as a cellmate.

He was alone.

Today, though, through the haze and confusion, he could detect that something was different. The dank noises, the groans of the imprisoned, all the little sounds which had so seamlessly integrated themselves into the sounds in his head, had been replaced by shouting, by the striking of metals, pounding footsteps.

Slowly, Dietrich of Isaac, son of Johalva, drew himself up to the bars. The feathered fellow in the next cell had been a rare source of comfort in the last... ********, he didn't even know how long Janaff had been there. Before he'd arrived? After? Yesterday? Everything blended together.

Still, it would no doubt be a surprise to hear the young Jugdralian speak up without prompting.

"What's going on." He lacked the energy to turn it into a proper question; his voice was a deep, raspy growl. Slowly, he gripped a bar in each of his trembling hands, and brought his face up to try, unsuccessfully, to peer down the hallway.

Huge wings beat through the night air above the forest before stretching out to their limit, feathers spreading to catch as much air as possible on the cool night wind. The hawk king, like all hawks, suffered from unfortunately terrible night vision, but up high above the trees, he had no concerns about obstacles or threats; even by night, Tibarn ruled the skies.

Still, his wings were doing more work than he was accustomed to, at least during long flights. He preferred to travel by day, when he could catch rising hot air and sail straight from Phoenicis to Crimea with scarce effort on his part. At the very least, he had no trouble navigating to his destination. Arajudia was lit up like a sparkling gem in the dark, rapidly approaching. Two hundred feet below, he could hear several sets of padded feet thundering through the forest, staying well off the road and moving like shadows.

"We're close. I can smell... beorc. Steel. Blood. Filth." He could hear Captain Gerlach growling orders for his troops to fan out and approach the edge of the forest; he was aware that General Tibarn could hear a cat's whisper, the sound of the wind ruffling his fur, and didn't bother to confirm that the general concurred with these orders. Tibarn would make it clear if he disagreed.

Instead, the Hawk King simply banked to the left and dropped to just above tree level, flapping his wings hard to keep himself aloft without the higher-altitude breeze. Near-silently, he swept out into the clear-cut stretch of meadow between the forest and the city of Arajudia, then flared his wings and dropped onto his talons before folding his wings and turning to look back into the woods.

His night vision was poor, and though the others had hidden before reverting shape, the momentary lights that flashed with each transformation still made it all the worse. He could not see the humanoid figures standing in the brush, sulking in the shadows, the twitch of tall ears and waving tails, but he could see the glow of feline eyes, shining dots in the dark.

A pair of sandals brushed through the grass as an older cat ran up beside him, staring at the city gate, still several hundred yards off. "How's it look?" His voice was soft, gruff. This was business. One of his own was in trouble, and Mordache was still holding claim in Learanian territory.

"The gate is closed. Some of ours are already there, and some Estarcians, too, looks like. They're stuck with the gate the way it is." Gerlach flicked his ear and stood back, glancing at the gigantic form of the transformed avian general-- no doubt listening intently to every word exchanged.

"Right. I somehow expected that unit wouldn't be sufficient." He pondered it for a moment, then spread his wings. "We'll rendezvous. Let's go." He kicked off the ground, and as his wings suddenly pounded the air, Gerlach had to brace himself to stay upright before signaling for his men to follow.

Four cats and two tigers thundered out of the woods as Gerlach shifted, and twenty-eight paws cleared the distance between the woods and the gate in a matter of seconds. The Hawk King himself arrived ahead of them and dropped to just above ground level before finally reverting to a form more palatable to beorc. His wings beat slowly, suspending him a few feet off the ground, and then he dropped easily onto the dirt road.

"Tanya, isn't it?" He extended a hand to grip the Estarcian retainer's, smirking. "Tibarn. FEF Crew, leader of the Special Laguz forces." The felines caught up a moment later and transformed as Tibarn jerked his thumb over his shoulder. "And sourpuss here is Captain Gerlach. What's the status, and why haven't we got the gate open yet?"

It wasn't long before she was in the sky. If there was one thing Mihira really knew how to do it was scouting. She knew the precise range she needed to be at to be out of range from archers and close enough to see, both while factoring in changes during the night. As she circled around over the city in the night sky, she made sure to take notice of every detail she could. "They're concentrated at the north gate... probably because of Estarcia's army... Fairly large amount..." She continued on, looking east and west. "Lights there, too... hm?" She looked puzzled as she saw the lit area nearer to the center of the city. As she approached, she could see many people rushing around and could hear slight echoing from shouts. "...Fighting?" Mihira resisted trying to get a closer look. It would be risky going closer if there really was a skirmish. She had to go report back first. So that's exactly what she did.

She landed in a spot close to Tanya and wallace. She didn't bother dismounting, she just went straight to her report. "I'm back! Mordache is making sure to keep a heavy guard on the north gate, because you're stationed right in front of it. That's where most of the soldiers seem to be. Even during the night, they seem fairly vigilant. The other gates are being guarded too, but not as heavily. Still, if they notice any change in your formation or location, they're in a position where they can relocate conveniently, whereas with us, it would take longer..." She stroked Darius' neck as she paused to catch her breath. She realized that most of what she said was probably information that was already known, but she said it anyway in the chance that a slight detail could be helpful. "Oh! And I noticed something odd, too. There was a more brightly lit area closer to the town hall, so I took a look. It looked like there was some sort of skirmish, but I couldn't confirm it. I wanted to report back before I went to investigate further. I'm going now!" She flicked Darius' reigns and the wyvern flapped his large wings, sending a blast of wind at those around. Once in the air, she flew speedily back to Arajudia.

And that was of course, right before the hawk king arrived at the Estarcian encampment.

Quentin raised an eyebrow at the woman, even after she had finished spinning him around. Despite the information given, he still hadn't recieved information about stairs. But that's not what peturbed him.

"One of you is flying? Don't be ridiculous, milady! Humans cannot fly! Cease this madness immediately!"

He turned back into the direction he had been just earlier, not heeding Chince's words. "I appreciate the thought, but I am afraid I do not dare to trust the judgement of a person delusional or intoxicated to the point of seeing flying humans! No doubt you would have me fighting, dare I say, imaginary friends of yours! No, milady, I trust you to take care of yourself, and as such, you trust me to handle the real enemy!"

Quentin unsheathed his sword again, accidentally deflecting an arrow with the same movement. "Charge!" he cried out as nimbly moved towards the stairs, his sheath now in his belt, sword held in one hand. Feeling a soldier moving up to him, he grabbed the sword with both hands and slashed out, succesfully disarming the axe-wielding man. The axe lodged itself into the back of a soldier rushing at Chince, sending him falling to the ground. The first soldier scrambled to get to a weapon rack, but was stabbed through the head as Quentin stretched his sword forward, pointing towards the top of the stairs. "I'm coming for you, Sir Tanner! May your end come swiftly for your transgressions against a cripple!"

Quentin kept on moving, determined to exact judgement towards the treacherous sergeant. But first, he had a most formidable foe ahead of him.

Stairs.

Arajudia Prison

Learanian soldiers began to wildly scurry about, most not even hearing what Ziaram had said. However, a low ranking officer had caught his request and answered back. "You don't don't have to ask, getting back at these bastards is on the top of our list!" He picked up the lance from one of the fallen Mordacheans. "They're keeping more prisoners on the second level! We'll take care of the guards down there, so you don't have to worry about many more reinforcements. coming up!" He turned and shouted to the other soldiers. "Come on men, it's pay back time!!" With a loud cry, the soldiers charged off.

Over at one of the storerooms, a soldier's eyes widened in shock as his companion was flung back into the wall by a light spell. The soldier instantly pressed his back against the wall and readied his lance as he crept towards the doorway. Once he was there, he quickly jumped inside and thrust his lance at the first person he saw. He had hopefully acted too fast for the monk to be able to cast a spell at him.

At the sound of the crack, the knight's laughter subsided and his grin faded away. He readied his lance and shield as he stood protectively in front of the dark mage. He no longer mocked those on the other side of the barrier. Instead, he grew noticeably nervous about them. One or two of them meant nothing. But now other Learanian soldiers were helping. It wouldn't take long.

With one more punch, the Estarcian broke a hole in the barrier and from there it slowly began to crack and dissolve away. With fear, but full of conviction, the knight used all his strength to swipe his lance across the group before they could recover from attacking the barrier. He then used his large armor to tank against the soldiers and rammed a couple Learanians into the wall. The dark mage recoiled back at the destruction of his barrier, but hastily reached to his side and took out his spell book. He was shaking badly, but managed to fling a flux half-assedly at his enemies.

Outside Arajudia Prison
*For clarification on directions, this map is facing south, meaning enemies are west and the prison is south.*

User Image User Image User Image User Image
User Image A figure watched in the night as the intruders stormed the prison. He waited and observed, calculating, surmising, seeing just how well the small group would fair on what he already knew was going to be an ambush. He himself had already had all he could stand regarding ambushes... The Mordachean Commander in charge of the city was rather quite fond of them it seemed. The tactic was getting old. Even still, it seemed this group, from the start, was not some simple threesome that blindly rushed in to free the prisoners. Something was happening inside as well, and it was causing a panic in the soldiers. The mysterious figure grinned. "Interesting..."

He waited for the others to move away from the larger Estarcian man. More than that, he didn't move in until the perfect moment struck, when all other Mordachean soldiers attacking him were dealt with. As the final one fell to the hammer, a thin blade swiftly flew in front of Horatio's head from behind and tenderly relaxed against his throat. The mysterious man grabbed Horatio's other arm and held him in place. He did not show himself. Even if he did, all the Estarcian would be able to see was a helmeted soldier whose face was hidden in the night. "Be calm." he said coolly, surprisingly not demanding the officer to surrender like a proper soldier should. "The Commander of this city resides within the Town Hall, the building next door. Once you have freed the prisoners, move to strike the Town Hall. If he can be defeated, this city will be able to be retaken." The man paused as he noticed more soldiers approaching. "Do not dally. This Vern does not waste his time. Now listen very carefully... elbow me back... ...now!" Expecting that the Estarcian, though bewildered, would be competent enough to at least take the opportunity to elbow the person holding a sword on him, the mysterious man leaped back as if greatly harmed. He then stumbled into the darkness, where he vanished.

The other soldiers then surrounded around Horatio and attacked, giving him very little time to take in what had just happened. The other fighting continued gradually, but the intruders were still outnumbered.

*The maps are empty, because I don't want to take away from the imagination or creativity of you all. Just be aware that these are night maps. Also, the cells contain Learanian soldiers as well, not just you guys' characters- they're people, too.*

When another soldier stepped in the room and stabbed at him Verruckt screamed and jumped backwards, "HEEEELLLLPPPP!!!!" While the soldier was recovering from his blind thrust Verruckt quickly and sloppily rattled off another shine spell that was quite a bit weaker but was still enough to knock the soldier over. Verruckt then ran out of the room making sure to firmly plant a foot on the soldiers face and headed towards his fellow ex-prisoners.

So he was a...K-King? ...Oh dear...

This had certainly been a rather busy day. First, a jailbreak erupting without warning, the rather dashing newcomer turning out to be a King of all things, and now she found herself fighting for her freedom among a group of strangers. The way the roads were these days, the young cleric was certainly no stranger to a heated Strife. However...At her side was neither a heal staff to assist her protectors, not a sleep staff to ensure her own safety. As it stood at the moment, she was just a rather flimsy meat-shield, or perhaps rice paper! Point was, she was as useful as a blind-folded infant in a game of hide-and-seek. All she could do now was wait till her staves were reclaimed from the storage room. If only she had been far enough into her studies to wield light magic...But here she was, standing her ground as the rest struggled.

It was maddening really...

They were hardly a challenge. As expected, the soldiers were all swarming her now, hearing her laughter, but that was kind of the point in the end. At the very least, they certainly weren't paying attention to Horatio's arrows, were they? Annis grinned and giggled as her knives dragged across the exposed flesh of another guard, not even bothering to glance back to ensure that he had actually fallen dead. Chince was somewhere nearby, for sure, busy doing her own part. But Annis was here, avoiding arrows like she was partaking in some kind of crazy dance, dipping and twisting and moving right past the sharp whoosh of arrows in the fading light. There was the slice of steel through the fabric of her shirt and biting against the flesh of her waist, deep enough to bleed but not enough to cripple. Annis' laughter hit a keening high note as she barely avoided having an eye taken by an arrow and responded by rapidly swapping the melee knife in one hand for a small, sharp blade, missing a hilt. She threw it in the direction of the incoming arrow, grinning at the resounding thud that came shortly after. It was hectic, with blades flashing in the dimmed daylight and men screaming and just barely avoiding a lethal blow again and again and again, but all Annis could do was smile.

"Is that all you've got? That's it? I could handle you ******** in my sleep!" Annis dipped gracefully out of the way of an oncoming arrow and deflected a second with the blade of her knife, whipping the second from its holster once more and spinning it, flecks of blood flying every which way, before jabbing it into the soft, fleshy throat of an enemy soldier with a sword in his hand. She listened to the weapon crash to the ground as she smoothly removed her own weapon and soared up and away from an incoming lance. "Give me a challenge, already! Bring it on, assholes! Just try to stop me!"

They seemed to come faster now, slashing from all directions and causing her to redirect more of her attention to dodging rather than attacking. Well, then. That would put a damper on anyone's spirits. Annis twisted and ducked and dived and rolled, using her knives to deflect one attack while a well-timed sweeping kick to the knees sent the soldier crashing to the ground. She used his body as a springboard to launch back up, knife flashing as she deflected an arrow aiming for her. She couldn't dodge forever; the arrows were only easy to avoid when the whistling sounds came quickly enough to her ears, with enough time for her to orient herself in regards to its location and move. Every so often a man fell before she could reach him, arrow protruding from the back of the neck. Horatio was a great asset in this situation, but how long would his support keep her alive? Annis whirled and deflected an axe strike with her knives, stumbling. It was enough; another soldier with a lance, black hair buzzed short, attempted to strike her down and out of flight.

Suddenly, a crack of thunder whizzed through the air, striking a nearby archer dead. As the man collapsed to the ground, others nearby scrambled madly for a glimpse of the mystery assailant. An axeman lit on fire, and a lancer was ripped apart by slicing blades of wind. Fires were lighting all around them, creating patches of illumination in the continually waning light. Glimpses of a pair of grey wings, flapping furiously in the fray, could be scene, and it was the last several soldiers saw before magic sent them to their demise.

Annis's surprise aid came when Loch, who had long expected to receive word from Annis of her arrival in Arajudia, failed to receive as much. Annis had been a year now in the works attempting to make reparations in their relationship, and though Loch spent little time around her, he was slowly growing to trust her again. Her constant letters to him reminded him repeatedly that she still cared, and she was taking far more care to inform him of her particular affairs. The last letter she had sent informed him that she was on a job from Tibarn to seek the city of Arajudia, and that she would send word once she arrived there. It had been several weeks and that word never arrived. Loch promptly packed scarce belongings and set forth in the direction of the city, and once there found it under siege. Any frustration he may have had of her failing to inform him quickly evaporated under realization, and was replaced by concern. Magical tomes out, Loch ran until he heard a keening yell through the air. Annis's boisterousness was unmistakable.

Annis whirled around to meet steel approaching her face, only for the weapn to be deflected by a powerful blast of fire. The raven landed on the ground, feet solid, and reeled as soldiers died around her, magical blast after magical blast lighting the area with red, green, and yellow. Flicking the blood off of her knives, Annis turned to and fro before finally spying soft grey wings, and her entire expression lit up, backlight by a blast of Thunder. "Loch!" Approaching footsteps lead her to turn on her heel, flicking a wrist out and watching the sharp steel fly through the air before embedding solidly in the man's ribcage. Sword slipping from his hands, Annis snatched the weapon back with an unsettling squelch before rushing to Loch's location, deflecting and returning attacks as necessary as the world around her filled with the musty, dizzying feel of magical energy.

"Loch! Wh-What are you doing here??" Annis kept one knife in her hand, returning the other to her sheath, and beamed at him, taking a quick glance around the battlefield before returning her gaze to him. Most of the archers were dead now, as were a good deal of the foot soldiers. It would at least be safe enough to talk while fighting.

"Saving you." His answer was short and matter-of-fact.

"I-I mean, beyond that." Annis looked around at the battlefield and pulled them both out of the way of an incoming arrow before turning back to Loch. "Th-Thanks, for sure, I'm just surprised."

Loch blinked once at the sudden movement, and fixed his disheveled hair. He dug through his belongings and withdrew a staff. The head glowed, and he dug it into the ground as the glow exploded and expanded around them, forming a temporary barrier around them. He remained silent, glaring at her.

Annis took a look around them at the shimmering barrier before facing the heron again. Even the sounds beyond the barrier were muted now; someone was shouting outside, a lot of people were, actually, but she could hardly hear it. "...What...?"

"...I notice you have been growing your hair out."

"H-Huh?" She paused, reached a hand up, and stroked it tentatively. Whereas it previously fell in choppy bits beyond the nape of her neck and above her shoulders, it now uniformly fell in fanned-out waves to just past her shoulders, above her shoulderblades. "Ah... yeah. I am. I thought you, uh, would like it."

He watched her silently. "...Yes. It looks nice."

"It does?" She smiled sheepishly, face turning pink.

"Yes." He stared into her eyes for a moment, then promptly smacked her upside the back of the head. "That is for worrying me!"

Annis stared back. Loch's eyes were so deep, so transfixing... she had always loved his eyes. Annis leaned up, her own sliding closed, lips puckered, and...

Smack.

"Ow!" Annis clutched at the back of her head, looking up at Loch with a wince. "Did you really have to hit me?" she demanded.

"It seemed the only way to drive some sense into your skull," he conceded.

Annis gingerly rubbed the sore spot on the back of her head. "Didn't have to hit so hard..." She sighed and looked around at them, beyond the translucent barrier. "We can't stay here forever. The enemies are thinning out. We should probably either find the remaining barrier mages or find Horatio."

Loch simply nodded. He glanced around cautiously at their surroundings. "Hold on." He grasped the Barrier staff, its light still providing protection to them, and paused a moment. "Hold /on/." The staff's light greatly intensified, and a concussive force exploded around the two, knocking flat anyone who immediately stood around them. "Now we /run/."

Annis nodded, looking briefly around at the soldiers that now lay prone all around them before spreading her wings. She grinned up at Loch, flicking her hair off of her face with a quick jerk of her chin, and looked ahead. "Horatio's the one with the big hammer and the big bow, you can't miss 'im!" She shouted over the din, and vaulted forward, using her wings to propel her across the cobblestones and dirt, feet brushing against the ground.

"The cavalry has arrived!" Annis cried out, grinning, and sliced down one of the soldiers approaching the Warrior. With the two laguz there to help, Horatio would be just fine. What could possibly happen?

ﻬ Horatio ﻬ
â–« â–ªAltiplos Warriorâ–ª â–«

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Horatio had done the best he could to hold off the enemy reinforcements. He could only focus so much though. As much as he'd like to have them on the battlefield, he did not have eyes on the back of his head. The redhead nearly jumped in surprise when he saw a thin, but sharp blade just seem to just appear in front of his neck.

He felt the grip on his arm, and of course resisted, trying to pull out of the mystery man's grasp. "Let go of me, or you'll regret it!" threatened the Estarcian warrior. Before he could say anything else though, the mysterious sword-wielder whispered to stay calm. Why wasn't he demanding his surrender, or for him to join the prisoners? Something was off about him. Maybe he wasn't part of the enemy...

And then the mysterious swordsman went and told him vital details of where to strike the enemy? Just who was he, anyway? There were too many unanswered questions, and Horatio wanted to know all the answers! Before he could even begin to ask though, he was prompted to move as if elbowing him. Horatio was not about to disregard his advice, and he made the motion swiftly. To anyone else on the outside, it would have looked like he escaped being captured.

And now he had to focus on the real enemy, before he could even think of giving this vital information to his allies. This element of surprise was all they had, and he would not lose it! Knocking an arrow, Horatio got to work in backing up Annis again. Arrow after arrow soared into the soldiers, but when the soldiers closed in, he couldn't aim fast enough! He couldn't help her in time!

But it turns out he didn't have to. The flashes of magic, of thunder, wind, and fire lit up the scene, with screams of the enemy erupting all at once, then fading into a cold, dead silence. The cavalry had indeed arrived. Horatio wasn't sure from where the heron sage came from, but he was grateful for his presence, and Annis's return to his side on the battlefield. "Thanks for the backup, you two! As soon as we get out of the thick of battle, I have information to share. I think I've got the key to winning!"

The horde of soldiers was actually thinning,a comment she never expected to be able to say. The bird girl and a strange new bird man had suddenly arrived. Now that the crows had shrunk she could see about breaking through the soldiers near the gates. The captain was still there however he seemed to have his back turned and was now looking at... she had only seen the King once before but that looked like him. The captain's attention snapped to her quickly and his lance was brandished before she could make it back to the group. Her sword would never get a chance to reach the man let alone past his armor, and a tactical parry and few jumps and she made it back to her allies.

"They got through! There's a prison break. We just need to hold out!" She was so happy she didn't even think about the small army of casters that surrounded the barrier who would be devoting their spells on them once the barrier shattered. But that was a back thought at best.

She also didn't think that the other soldiers would hear her. Some were now quickly moving away from the small force of four to bolster the prison entrance, and though their numbers had decreased drastically, it would make it that much harder to infiltrate from either side. Chince would worry about them in a moment, the stragglers were more important now.

"You. Blind guy!"
She called out stabbing a man under his chin and tipping the sword up,so that it literally tickled his skull, and sent a tingle down his spine before he died. A secret the two of them would share forever. He would be named Jimmy in her mind. "We'll be changing directions in a sec!"

She wondered how loud that lightining explosion sounded to him....

You may call me useless for the fact that I am learning swordsmanship with my left arm

Well that was good. Those soldiers would handle the reinforcements while they could finish things up here. Things were certainly looking up for them. They charged off, and he looked back at the group. It was only then that he realized someone was missing.

Looking around, he couldn't tell where that monk had gone. However, it wasn't long after that a scream was given off in the distance, so he had a good idea where he was. As he started off towards the store room, the monk was coming towards him, clutching a book in one hand. So that's where he went off to. He looked back to the others. "Come on, lets go see what else is in that store room. Anything we find here can certainly help out."

He turned back to Verrukt, and pointed behind them. "Stay behind us. We don't need you getting into a fight close up with these people. We'll handle the fighters close up." After saying that, he charged off towards the store room to see what stuff they could get in there.

Without knowing I'm alone underneath this moonlight
I've got a feeling that fragile things are being moved far off
By the power of always believing you'll be near me

I called out only your name

Inside this light...
On nights where it's like I can't catch hold of anything
There isn't a day I don't think about it

-Cyric-

That first crack was only the beginning. After many takes later, the barrier was broken. However, it seems Mordachean wasn't as stupid as they seemed after all. Once broken through, they immedietly retaliated. Cyric took note of the spear the knight had and before he could warn the others, they were knocked off their feets. It seems they weren't getting out that easily. Without a weapon, there wasn't much Cyric could do anyhow...but perhaps....if he could just get that spear from the knight...he'd be able to help...

The king looked behind him where Clara and that Laguz was. "Worry about the ones behind us, later! Take care of these ones first!"

Tanya paced about until the Wyvern Scout returned. The light she talked about...was that the King? Or was that Horatio? Either way, that was the sage's only ray of hope that both the king and Horatio were safe. Of course, this also meant Learanian's volunteer were probably safe as well. She let out a small sigh of relief, least now she can at least settle down a bit and try to stop pulling her hairs out. She was calm for the moment..until she can figure something out...until helped arrived...

...Until Mihira took off again and a sudden well built man suddenly showed up in front of her...Or more specifically..A large hawk...landed in front of her, changed from an animal to a person then started talking to her casually. Tanya froze where she stood and simply stared blankly at the man then at the crowd behind him. It took her a minute to register what just happened before she snapped herself back to reality. She did frown a bit at his comment and will admit her incapability to get it open but...ouch.

It took her a total of a few minutes to give him the short detail on what's happened from the gate being on a lock-down from the moment Horatio entered the city to now as well as the information she had gotten from the Wyvern Scout.

___________

I've been searching for the future forever.
I've been searching for the future with you

You quietly gazed at me

Call out my name underneath this moonlight
I promise I'll go see you, no matter where
To your side

Velkan was still pawing at the invisible barrier ineffectually when it broke. No longer supported he fell back to all fours, perfect timing to as the knights weapon swept just over his head. The flat blade brushed the tips of his ears, the feel of the metal stunned Velkan as it dawned on him. This knight was going to kill him! What had Velkan ever done to him? Why was this happening? Velkan had never fought anyone before, he'd been going on instinct so far but now the reality of the situation was sinking in.

He was paralyzed by fear as a pair of soldiers tried to rush the armoured man and where thrown against the wall roughly. The cat laguz was still unaware that he was hissing or that his hair was standing on end. He had to move, but moving forwards would be suicidal. He flinched as a flux tore out a section of the floor near him. He didn't want to die! Maybe if he just went back to his cell they'd treat him with mercy...

Then that guy the girl had come to rescue spoke up and reminded him about the ones behind their little group. Advancing meant death, remaining meant death. Growling lowly like the cat backed into a corner that he was, Velkan rushed forwards. He knew nothing about fighting aside from brawls he'd seen back in the circus, once Tiny had kicked the s**t out of him for looking sideways at a girl they both had a crush on, but Tiny had been a tiger. With nothing but a feral instinct that he didn't understand Velkan leapt at the knight, hissing and spitting his desperate defiance.

When the mages began casting, Janaff understood that the intruders were a fierce enough offensive force for the enemies to employ such defensive tactics. With a nearby prisoner breaking out to attack the guards, the situation was perfect for him to carve his own way out of the cell and assist his would-be allies in the fray.

With urgency he became enveloped in green light for the brief moment it took to shift into hawk form. Time to get these feathers sorted! In the limited space, he could not flap his wings and so landed himself back on his talons- these known for their steel-rending power, he balanced himself and struck across multiple bars once, twice... and then gathering his strength, rammed them down. A nearby guard leapt at him screaming, not letting fear lose him to hesitation; he swung an axe down onto what had been Janaff's immediate location just as the bird laguz shifted back into humanoid shape. He was lacking a weapon to fight back. With a quick thought he dodged around the continued chain of attacks, allowing the soldier's deadly metal edge to whizz past him just enough to get close and hook his leg mid-swing- the man tripped, the weapon's momentum bringing him down on sharp, freshly-cut jail bars. He howled in pain; Janaff honed in on an abandoned shortsword on the ground, making a quick leap over another body strewn on the floor to collect it and returning to finish the opponent painlessly, sparing him a few hours of suffering.

"Yeesh. All right, next..." He muttered, blinking in surprise at the sight of other bird laguz in the invading force.

I c wat u did thar.
