He was stubborn, but there was a line when he just got plain TIRED. It was getting harder and harder with each miss to keep going.

Aim, shoot, fail. Reel in and repeat. Aim, shoot, fail. Reel in and repeat. Did anyone find this getting less and less fun? Calder sure was. It was starting to feel like real work.

Trick or Treat Hobknocker
Crew

PostPosted: Wed Mar 16, 2011 7:15 pm

With the combined forces of Calder, Draven and Seiji, the harpoon came out with minimal effort and Hobknocker was freed. He poked momentarily at the hole in the middle of his chest to assess the damage and concluded that it could have been far worse. "Thank you," he stated to the students genuinely. Thanks to their help, he would live to be undead another day and his beloved kitten would not become an orphan.

"As promised, I'll leave a reward with each of ye. but for now, it might be best to go back to killin' that giant squid. I don't have the will to pick up another harpoon, so ye will have to do it yourself." He really felt bad for them but there was no way that he was going to pick up another harpoon. He might not be as lucky the second time the squid decided to make quick work of him. If he can help in any other way.. he will.

Hobbling to the railing of the boat he peered over and dropped a silver pumpkin seed into the depths with a quiet wish, "My luck be with ye, Elaphe. Ye poor sodding #@$@#!." He really hoped the boil could be saved. The Captain had mentioned that he could breathe underwater so wouldn't drown. But she didn't say nothin' about being squeezed to a tentacle full of boil goo. He shuddered to think about the possibilities as he hobbled back downstairs to deal with the booty he promised the students that helped him.

((Silver pumpkin seed goes to Elaphe/han for being a good sport as he was the only student that was unable to try to rescue Hobknocker due to his unfortunate circumstance!))

((30th Roll for Epic Fail Squid Harpooning))

He stopped, missing one more time and lowering his harpoon gun. He couldn't keep doing this. It just didn't make sense. He just kept going and going and going and going and it seemed endless. He wasn't a scientist, but shouldn't some sort of game of odds and ratio come into play here? Shouldn't he have HIT this thing by now? Ho was this even POSSIBLE?!

He looked at the squid, his ears dropping, before his eyes went wide. Calder was about to have a meltdown.

Cricket observed the Kelpie with a slightly quirked brow (just barely, but on her face it was noticable), pausing for a moment, before moving to take the harpoon he'd been using, looking it over before sighing and handing the Kelpie the one she'd been using.

"It appears someone has been messing with the equipment. Try using this instead." she said firmly, before moving back to where she had been previously. The fact she could maintain her balance on a rocking boat was... to say, impressive.

Calder now only has to roll one 20-sided dice and get an increment of 5 to hit

While Calder used pony eyes on the squid, looking close to just crying, about to just drop his harpoon gun and whine, Nurse Cricket took ultimate pity on him to check up on what was happening. It seemed after you were on a ship and firing shot after shot without results, it was time to check on an malfunctions. There was just unlucky, and then there was the point when something was just up.

Ears still flat down, he watched as she went over, took his gun, and looked it over. He was about to say that maybe it was best if he went down below, but she handed her weapon to him and said his was faulty. "...try again?.." He sniffled, taking the gun and looking at the squid.

Trying to man up as best he can with his shattered pride, he moved over and aimed.

If Calder didn't look ready to just fall to his knees right then before, he was about to fall over now. He stared at the squid and the harpoon sticking from the tentacle. The tentacle HE shot. His eyes went wider (if that was possible), his ears slowly rose, and he looked stunned. "..........."

He looked to his harpoon, at the squid, and then scooped the nearest person next to him, which happened to be Jove, and spun about (which probably wasn't smart with one person holding a harpoon gun). "I HIT IIIIIITTTTTT!!!"

...Just two more tentacles pinned would have made her job just a little bit easier, but alas. It seemed the students had lost a lot of energy for squid-hunting and Cricket folded her arms. If she'd been inclined to, she would have frowned. Either way, she soon enough vanished off of the boat, presumably into the water...and it almost seemed as though a mad feeding frenzy was attracted to the boat.

....
......

Cricket may have been fishbait.

However, the mad thrashing of the boat soon ebbed...and it was nearly 30 minutes after this that the tentacles were physically RIPPED from the boat, leaving pieces where they'd been harpooned into place, and a certain lost student was THROWN onto the boat, landing on the deck with a splat!

However, Elaphe was breathing. Not very happy, most likely, but alive.

It would be another 20 minutes before Cricket herself heaved herself on board, covered in teeth marks of a sort and seeming more displeased than ever before. The fact she sat down at all the release her centipedes was shocking...unless of course they were gathering energy for the nurse. Then it would have made perfect sense.

Hrrmmm.

Either way, Cricket soon took up her post at the front of the ship again.

"Go back to bed.

All of you." she snipped.

On return to their pillows, however, Draven, Lizzy, and Calder would find them some interesting things to mess with. Given they didn't break their heads on them first.

Cricket had not been happy after the squid incident and it was after that which she had vanished from student-eyes to stay behind closed doors.

She was tired and chewed on and putting out more effort than she would in any other situation. She needed the rest.

Which meant the boat was going to pretty much be free reign for the last leg of the trip..

The end of the squid had been a bit unexpected for Draven. He made a mental note: Never mess with Nurse Cricket. He had no idea what happened in that water, and he decided he didn't want to know.

---

After the squid attack, things seemed quiet. He went back to filling his days sitting around the boat, enjoying the fact that he was sailing at all.
It is a little bit like flying, he thought as he leaned on a railing near the bow of the boat and watching it cut through the water. It was completely different form flying, but nothing like being on land. The boat felt much more free, perhaps that was why it was like flying? Eh. These were thought he'd already rolled around in his many times on this trip. No need to do so again.

His gaze shifted from the waves hitting the boat to the horizon. Where were they going, and when would they get there?
"What exactly is our destination?" he asked out loud. Again, something he had thought about often.

"Yay! You got it Calder!" She cheered - before clinging onto the railing for dear life as the boat started to rock about wildly, her widened eyes scanning the deck for their "captain", who was nowhere to be found... Of course, she soon put two and two together and assumed that the Nurse had decided to save the poor student who had been held captive by the squid. She didn't want to know what the Nurse did, but it worked and the boat soon stopped rocking and the boil was safe.

That was all that matters, right?

Quietly, Lizzy slowly let go of the railing, tugging on her jacket as she nodded at the Nurse's orders. Giving one last look at the tentacles now pinned to the side of the boat, she made her way below deck, to the pillow as she had left it against the wall. Oddly enough, there was something there and she tossed it into her suitcase; she would look at it in the morning... She really needed some rest.

----

It had been a while since the squid attack - and effectively, the last exciting thing that had happened. She had gotten even more used to the smell and texture of the boat, and was probably getting a bit too used to it. The salty sea air was also quite refreshing, when she's not too concerned about being dumped into the sea for whatever reason.

"Hm...? I'm not really sure," She caught Draven's question on one of her 'walk around the boat due to boredom' routines, "I don't think that was covered when Arel gave us that briefing in the auditorium..."

Even though they didn't get as many tentacles as they were told, Nurse Cricket probably felt they had waited long enough and that time really was of the essence. While he didn't see her leap off, noticing she was gone worried him. After she gave him her harpoon gun, he didn't want her to get eaten by the squid. While he would have loved to watch, all the trashing about made it impossible to keep his footing and he spent a good 30 minutes falling, sliding, and weakly attempting to get back up on his feet. When it finally stopped, he was laying on his back, feeling sick.

But all was well. Fishpants was back without a huge chunk out of him, and Nurse Cricket returned looking both worn and irritated. Not about to give them some time to celebrate, she ordered them back to bed.

Frowning, he shuffled back below deck and plopped on his pillow, exhausted.

---

Like the other students, Calder was passing the time. He walked. He slept. He walked some more. He carved his name into the ship with a stick he pulled from his hair, and was now just strolling up and down the deck. A few days to rest after the squid had been nice, but after such an eventful wake-up, everything was even duller in comparison.

When he heard Lizzy and another boil talk, he strolled over, but not to close to them as the boil seemed intent to lean against the railing. I could push him. It would be SO easy. He took a breather, stepping back one more step and took a moment to think of un-drowning things. "I don't know where we are going, but I hope we get there soon. I'm getting bored."

Draven was surprised to hear Lizzy answer him. He hadn't noticed anyone else around. "Yeah, he seemed to skip that part," he replied, turning he head to face her. It was reassuring to know that he wasn't the only one who was clueless about where they were headed.
"Arel strikes me as the type who doesn't tell everything anyway." Most of the teachers seemed that way...at least about field-trips. "Maybe this is one of those, 'The journey is the important part' things. Though...I don't know exactly what we would be learning right now."

When the kelpie chimed in, Draven turned around so he would have an easier time talking to two. "Your're right," he said to the kelpie. "This is fun," he gestured to the boat and the ocean, "but it is dragging on a bit." He did enjoy the sailing, but he had wanted a little bit more high-seas adventure on this rather awesome boat.

"We've been sailing...how many days now? Can't be much farther, can it?"

From the deck, something could be seen in the distance, looming. Lingering. It was actually a really good sign to finally see something in the distance after nearly 22 days out in the water. Which wasn't too bad. They probably wouldn't be one of the first boats there.

None the less, it wouldn't remain a positive sign for very long.

The boat gave a lurch, quite similar to when the squid had grabbed onto it, and then buckled, a crunching noise accompanied by the snap of wood coming from beneath the deck. For those of the student body who weren't up on the deck, they were soon washed up there by a current of water.

Water. The ship was going down. If anybody had been checking, they had hit rocks. Very sharp rocks. Unfortunately, the one person who would have been checking for such a thing was in her cabin...

and when the ship lurched again, it seemed everybody on deck would be flung off.

Except for their 'captain', who wouldn't be seen again. Not even her faint glow as she descended beneath the waves with the ship. Cricket was gone and the students flung from the ship would be swept away by the water.

However, it seemed, in some twisted turn of events, the squid from a few days previous surfaced a singular tentacle from the water which would be enough for the students to walk on.

Apparently Cricket had made it her b***h.

Either way, at the end of the tentacle-road, the students would find themselves on an island....
