Gabriel couldn't bring himself to meet her eyes. He winced as the shove made his shoulder sting, but he didn't try to stop it. He knew he deserved it. Her near apology made it hurt even more. He continued pulling the bag over, rummaging through it with his weak hand. His fingers closed around the tiny, cool metal..

"It started out that way.." he said quietly, pulling his fist from the bag and turning it up to slowly open and reveal the key. "I didn't know what to think. All I knew was that the main reason I wasn't dead was because we were chained together. When the key dropped in front of me, I just grabbed it. I didn't know if it would even work. Some mystery key from an island that made me feel as close to death just by standing on the ground as when you first pointed that spear at me.. It's not like I was experienced in that sort of thing. ...I wasn't thinking about anything but my neck."

Finally, he aimed the key at the manacles and stuck it into the lock of the cuff around Tessa's hand. "I know I'm an idiot. By the time I did start trusting you, I... didn't want to use the key. I wanted to stay like this. And then, I started forgetting that I even had it, with everything going on. ..The last thing I want is for you to go away.." Now wasn't the time to bring up the deeper feeling within that had grown. ..How he'd liked being stuck so close to her... "If you say you're not leaving because you feel like killing me again, can you at least leave enough of me in one piece to send to my family?" he attempted to joke, though his voice was flat. Taking a deep breath, he turned the key.

The feeling that came with the manacle slipping from her wrist wasn't freedom. It felt like she'd lost something, or was, at the very least, on the edge of losing it. Quintessa look at her chaffed skin, even twisted her wrist to get used to the feeling.

"You are an idiot," she said at length. Quintessa reached for the key, and twisted it between her fingers. "When I first met you I thought you were going to be an easy kill, but I was quickly proven wrong." Grabbing his manacled wrist in her hand, she turned it until the hole was visible and inserted the key. "You're the only male I've ever met that can laugh at something like this. It doesn't make you smart, but it's...It's just, I was happy to be near you, but scared that you were going to die because you couldn't get away; that I couldn't protect you when we were chained." She twisted the key and pulled the manacles away.

"So, where do you go from here, Gabriel? Back to your ball games and family dinners?"

Gabriel's ears twitched slightly as Tessa spoke again, bracing himself for the metaphorical knife to be dug in. Her words were unexpected though, and he raised his gaze back up, feeling the weight of the chain lift from his arm. It was a nice feeling, but it didn't compare to what Quintessa was telling him right then...

He snorted softly and nodded. "I suppose so. I'll need a while before throwing any ball around though." He looked down at his shoulder, and his brow rose. He was still bleeding.. "Actually... from here, I think a visit to a healer is in order." Of course, that sent his gaze toward Tessa's abdomen for a moment before lifting back to meet her eyes. "So, um.. after getting all fixed up..... do you think.. maybe....... you'd want to see what one of those family dinners is like?" He gave her a slight, crooked smile. "I mean, if you're not too busy going getting assigned another assassination job already. I'd hate to keep you from your work."

"That would be a little too logical for us, don't you think?" She grinned, setting back with an easy hand over her waist. "I think I'd like that. Maybe I could even cook something nice for your family. Which do you think would be better? Burnt rabbit, or raw fish?"

Almost on impulse she turned her head to look for Terrance and Sydney, only to find an empty hut. "I think I have some time to spare."
