Callie was out on a nighttime stroll. She still had an hour or so before curfew, which was nice, and it was dark enough that her eyes didn't burn in the sunlight. Currently, she was headed to the library to exchange the book she had been reading. Sure, it was excellent on the topic of healing, but it wasn't exactly what she'd been looking for. It was a class she'd taken on a whim, but upon learning that Eden had an almost unnatural skill with the subject, Callie started working harder at the class. Any time she ran into problems, she'd go to him for assistance. Luckily, he seemed to have a well of patience for her... or at least when it came to healing. Maybe he'd look into being a Healer or Medi-Wizard upon leaving Hogwarts.

As she walked up the hall, Callie hummed a soft song, looking through her bag to try and find a headband to pull her hair back from her eyes while she read. The blonde had a tendency of curling up over books, causing a blonde waterfall to land atop the pages, which usually made it quite difficult to read. Then again, she could tie her hair back in a bun or something, but that was typically reserved for Dueling Club and Namaste... plus that one first date with Eden. That had been a lovely evening.... She glanced up, thinking she saw a person, but not certain in the shadows of the hallway.

Aire was exhausted. The school year was racing at top speed towards OWL exams and Aire was feeling the stress from all 22 classes. She wasn’t even sure she could list all her classes. She was pretty sure she hadn’t attended one or two...or more this week...well, as long as she made it to Quidditch practice and Professor Harlowe wasn’t kicking her off Quidditch it couldn’t be that bad, right?

So! The obvious solution to all Aire’s problems was to play a master prank just before OWLs! To destress! She had a very simple one in mind that involved a cauldron full of hair-raising potion and four bottles of Harmony’s hair dye. She had stashed the finished product in the unused Girl’s Bathroom and had stopped to pick it up just before running back to the Gryffindor dorms-- which of course, her usual way involved scaling the side of a wall and catching a ride on a moving stair and skittering across another stair--or some assortment of parkour tricks.

Whether it was due to the extra weight in her bag or her exhaustion, Aire slipped as she was pulling herself up the side of the corridor-- her bag caught the edge of a suit of armor, her fingers missed a usually-familiar ledge, and her feet scrambled for purchase. The contents of her bag went spilling everywhere: a pile of textbooks, a notebook, chocolate mousse cake from dinner, a deck of tarot cards, and four bottles of hair-raising laced hair dye.

Aire sat momentarily stunned as the suit of armor clanged loudly for the whole corridor to hear. She grabbed for her wand, hoping to clean up the mess before someone came around before realizing that her prank for Harmony had found another victim, who was now splattered in a cacophony of colors...not to mention hair-raising potion. ”Manannán mac Lir I am so sorry,” she muttered, half in prayer and half in self-admonishment. There was nothing to it though. She scuttled over, the words tumbling out in a nervous mess before she recognized who it was. ”Err. Sorry. About the... everything. Oh! You’re uh...the Astronomy prefect. Astronomy girl. Prefect. Person. I mean. Are you okay?”

Callie could swear she heard someone running about. Despite her excellently honed vision in darker environments, the shadowy person seemed to have vanished, at least from where she'd spotted them. Perhaps they were really fast... or Callie was losing her marbles. One or the other. She sighed softly into the night, wondering if the mysterious shadow person were up to mischief. If so, she'd pin her prefect badge on her dress and call to action. If not, well, they weren't out past curfew.

Just as Callie heard the noise change directions, this time coming from above, something fell and hit her on top of the head. After a yelp of pain from the initial hit, Callie realized she was covered in something very cold, wet, and .... colorful? She looked at her nice yellow dress, now a mess of reds, blues, and green, and that was just what was visible. As if acting out a horror, the girl went to grab at her moonstruck hair, before realizing it wasn't sitting in normal position. Her periphery noticed it slowly raising, before the Hufflepuff connected the dots. A hair raising potion, paired with some sort of paint, ink, or heavens forbid, dye. She looked up as a familiar brunette shuffled over. At least they looked nervous. She mumbled out an apology, earning a heavy sigh. Callie looked over with dye-splattered glasses and nodded once. "That's me. Astronomy club captain. Hufflepuff prefect. Speaking of which. What... what were you doing? What is this?" The cadence of her voice betrayed her upset, the normally calm girl trying to keep her errant emotions in check.

While waiting on some sort of response, Callie dug through her bag, searching in vain for something to cover her hair with. Eventually she found a hair tie, which she used to try and wrangle the still floating hair. Once it got pulled into a messy bun, it was slightly better, though it was tugging on her scalp, which hurt a bit. She felt a range of emotions, most of which were foreign to her. Confusion, hurt... anger. She didn't like feeling angry, but for her, it happened so seldom it never seemed a problem. Sure, she could preach on how natural emotions were, but feeling them was quite different. Finally, a squeaky voice allowed for some words. "Please, please tell me this isn't a permanent dye. Please say it'll wash right out with no problems. Please, please tell me this." By the end, her normally airy voice had a rough, steeled edge to it. The sound was very much unlike the normal Callie. Dark blue eyes trained on the other girl, Duanaire, the Gryffindor Prefect. Were prefects allowed to scold other prefects? It wasn't like she was going to give a detention, anyway.

At least it was Calliope Whitethorne, Aire thought. Professor Whitethorne had a sense of humor and understanding--Aire was pretty sure she knew about the perfect crimes and pranks, but she hadn’t yet called Aire out on any of them. There was the whole reorganizing of the Potions Storeroom for pranks a few years ago, her super expensive valerian prank last year that involved always replacing the valerian no matter how much was used. This year she had simply replaced all the storeroom labels with italics. That had been a fun study session/ perfect crime prank.

Anyways, Professor Whitethorne seemed to be chill, so hopefully her daughter probably would too? Then again, Aire had never made quite this much of a mess with her potions. Yet Calliope seemed...upset? Definitely not her usual floaty calm. Aire shrunk a little, nervously. Calliope couldn’t exactly give her detention or anything, but Aire wasn’t here to make enemies.

”I was...it was supposed to be a prank,” she admitted quietly. ”Not on you! Sorry not on you. Sorry. I was...just going back to my dorm. With the prank.”

Aire shrunk back nervously at the sharp edge to Calliope’s voice. Sure they weren’t close friends, but they were in the same year and Aire knew that Calliope was generally very soft-spoken and kind of...well daydreamy. She thought Callie was dating an older student, but didn’t really know who. Probably someone equally daydreamy. Either way, the definitively not-daydreamy tone had Aire on edge. ”Uh not permanent? I think? Mine came out well..after a few months.” She held up the corner of her own hair, where the silver from that summer had entirely vanished. Then again it had been like...8-9 months….she probably shouldn’t mention that. ”We can probably scourgify the dye out and the hair raising will settle after a few hours? Maybe?”

Hopefully.

”Hello? Is everyone alright?”

Oh no, someone else was here! Aire wanted to run or hide or both, but she couldn’t just leave her poor victim like that. Would a scrougify be enough? Aaaaaahhhhhhhhh why had this happened?!

_______________

Sparrow had opted to focus on directing this year-- she’d performed in Wicked once before as part of her summer troupe/ before-Hogwarts troupe, and she didn’t shink she could handle the mental and emotional toll of performing For Good again. But that just meant she wasn’t learning one role, but all the roles. She had every detail down pat in preparation for the performance in a few days-- At this point they were just doing dress rehearsals all day and she had gone out for a stroll by the lake and some last minute transfiguration practice with Cenek.

A sudden crash from down the corridor caught her attention. Sparrow turned her head curiously and dragged Cenek along, citing ”It is our solemn duty as prefects to rescue students before curfew.” She called down the corridor as they neared: ”Hello? Is everyone alright?”

The scene was a mess. Sparrow watched the two fellow prefects and the scattered books and belongings. Callie was particularly splattered and Sparrow rushed forward. ”Oh goodness what happened? Did you two see what happened?” she asked, assuming the two prefects had been on patrol today. She reached for the color-splattered skirt, her wand drawn. Sparrow brushed the sparkly ribbon on the end of uher wand away and murmured a ”Scourgify” to try to set things right.

”Uh. It. Was...My fault. I slipped. And uhhh...the hair dye prank. Uh. Exploded.” Aire was positively burning with shame at being caught by the older prefects. Could older prefects punish younger ones? That made sense? Sparrow was uh...obnoxious.

Sparrow simply waved for Aire to clean up the hall as she fussed over Callie. ”Oh Callie, your hair! We should wash this immediately. That’s the only way to see what we’re working with. Unless...you like the polka-splotch style?” It certainly was a more Sparrow aesthetic than Callie one, but...well her hair was a multicolored green-mint right now. That said enough.

▬▬Critiscm is something we can avoid easily...▬▬

Cenek and Sparrow had been finishing up a transfiguration practice, and were about to head out toward their towers. They were chatting about casual things, Sparrow's directing and Cenek's love life (or lack thereof) when they heard a crash from the hall. cenek was tempted to let it be, they weren't on patrol tonight. However, Sparrow was already on her way to discover what it was, dragging Cenek along with her. He smiled at the girl, she truly was something special. He shook his head, no Sparrow wasn't his gril friend, was only his friend, he could not have any sort of romantic thoughts about her, she wouldn't want that, and her happiness was everything.

He then focused on the mess in front of them, two younger prefects, Calliope and Aire, seemed to have gotten into a mess. He assumed it was Aire's fault, the girl was always pulling pranks. The scene was kind of colorful at least, nothing boring, although things with Aire were rarely boring. Sparrow already cleaned up part of the mess before Cenek had time to react, she was a pro at being a leader and taking charge of a situation. He gave a slight smile to Aire, trying to comfort her as she seemed a little shameful about what had happened.

He began thinking about the detention she would be getting, would it be possible to get her to work with Professor Whitethorn? Surely that would teach the prefect a lesson, Professor Whitethorn was the mom of the Calliope. Maybe he could get Sparrow to recommend to Professor Harlowe that Duanaire serve under Professor Whitethorn. There were four prefects present though, and he hadn't assigned too many detentions...

He stopped with his detention thoughts when Sparrow mentioned Callie's hair, turning weird shades and doing weird things. Cenek was no hair expert, and frankly Sparrow was good at hair, but this required a more expert touch. "Look we'll sort out punishments and whatnot after we see how bad this ends up, it doesn't seem like the hall is too badly damaged... but Callie's hair on the other hand." He looked between the three girls, why were there so many all at once it was like being at home again. He ran his hand through his bangs and sighed, "Sparrow, why don't you escort Miss Whitethorne and Miss Aindrias-Evera to the Prefect bathroom, we should have plenty of room in there. I'll go get Finley, and he can help uh...assess the situation." He then mumbled under his breath, "If he's out snogging with Chadwick though then I'm not going near them, sucks."

With Whom: too many prefects

Callie could feel a bit of anger simmering in her soul. Aire said it was supposed to be a prank, though not on her. Callie drew in a deep breath, frowning deeply. After asking how long the dye would remain, Aire said it wasn't permanent. Good. Apparently it came out after... a few... months. A FEW MONTHS?!?! Callie didn't have a few months to wait, not while looking like a Jackson Pollock painting! Aire said they could probably use the cleaning charm to get the dye out, then the potion should wear off after a couple hours. Fantastic. As if on cue, and with someone coming along behind, the hairtie snapped, her hair fluffing out and raising again. Great.

Callie looked over to see Sparrow and Cenek, who seemed to quickly help out. Sparrow asked what happened, and Callie sent a small glare at Aire. Sparrow cleaned up a bit as Aire explained what happened. Sparrow started to fuss over Callie, saying they should wash her hair. Okay, that was a solid idea, especially since two different people said the same thing. "No, Sparrow. I don't like this. I want my normal hair back. I should probably ask mom what to do. But I don't want her to see me like this. Not... all... gross." She sighed softly, looking at her nice dress, now all colorful and messy.

Cenek, bless him, mentioned doling out punishments... after things were cleaned up. He then told Sparrow to escort the group to the Prefect's Bath, while he got Finley. Yes! Finley was Mr Archer's son! Mr Archer had been doing her hair since she went to Wool's, and she trusted him with her hair. By extension, Finley was probably skilled enough to take care of this. And if not... well... then she'd go to her mom for help. She was pretty sure her mom dyed her hair blonde anyway. "Okay. A plan. Thank you, Sparrow and Cenek. Ugh, it's all sticky." She frowned as she touched her dress, the dye still a bit wet. She sighed at her hand, which was now a purply blue. She sighed heavily, then walked with the others toward the Prefect Bath. She felt a lot less angry, but she was still quite upset. She'd treasured her hair for her whole life, and now it was... well, colorful.

Instinctively, he pushed his goggled into his hair, letting his vision blur. He unfolded his glasses from the magically-protected case they remained within and pushed them onto his face. He hadn't stayed behind to get talked to by... everyone, probably, knowing the words would just ring hollow. Somewhere behind his upset he vaguely heard his name called out, but his feet didn't stop.

Even though he was exhausted, wanting nothing more than to go to bed, the stairs were just too much. He barely made it up one flight before his knees started to shake. Using his sweater sleeve, Seb wiped away tears he didn't even know had formed. He managed to find one of the little nooks he'd discovered previously before he just plopped onto the ground. He let himself curl into a ball, arms wrapped around his shins as his face sat on his knees. His glasses pushed up as he buried his face along with his emotions.

Was he getting worse? He didn't even see the snitch that time! It had been right there, only a handful of inches from his face.... but he missed it entirely! This had to be some horror from the fates, right? That or it was a very real sign that he should just officially give up. Maybe he could see if Nic would just ask one of the first years to fill in... even one of them would probably be better than him. Maybe he could even play sick just to see. Seb sniffled as he curled up tighter, the emotions just overwhelming him. No amount of help, practice, good advice... nothing seemed to fix whatever was broken in him. He was just cursed with bad luck, and he knew he always would be.

She watched Csuri secure the snitch and Seb disappear from the field. The blonde had called out to him, but he seemed to ignore her. Stuffing her blankets into her purse, Alice hurried after him, struggling to keep up with her little legs. But thankfully Seb didn't go too far and she was able to catch up to him as he disappeared into one of the little alcoves he liked to hide in. Seb was sitting on the floor and Alice sank down to the floor beside him. "Sebby..." she said softly, resting her hand on the top of Seb's head. It would be hard to find the right words to say to cheer her boyfriend up. He had heard a bunch of those words before, each time trying to encourage him and he was still getting beaten. She could easily blame the weather and say that was the cause of his misfortune, but she knew he'd comment on past games where the weather wasn't a factor. Alice just wanted to pull Seb into her arms and tell him it was a fluke, but she knew how hard he'd been working and was still losing. Her lip fluttered and she let out a little sigh.

As tears continued to spill, Seb couldn't stop himself from sobbing. His body was shaking a bit as he cried, the weights of guilt collapsing upon him. He felt like he'd failed all his friends yet again, but this time... this time he hadn't even been close! He hadn't seen the dang thing, even though he'd been right in front of it. He figured none of the other seekers had ever been so bad at their job, either recent or ever. His sensitive ears twitched when he heard someone walk close. With the other clues, he knew it had to be Alice. She sat in the floor beside him and set her hand on his slightly wet hair. All she could say was his name, and his brain told him it was because she was so disappointed. Honestly, he was too. A handful of seconds (or was it several minutes? Who knew...) came another set of footsteps, this one far heavier. He couldn't identify it immediately, but he'd soon learn that it was Lewis.

Lewis had been watching the game, both curious and a bit anxious of the outcome. He was acutely aware that either outcome of this game wouldn't be... great. If Csuri won, it'd continue to crush Sebastian... but if Seb won, Csuri would probably lose her already tenuous temper. Once the game had been called, he felt the weight of the whole dynamic. It seemed most of the school had been rooting for the underdogs. He quickly told his family he'd see them later, then used his long legs to leave the stands quickly. He knew his friend was hurting, especially watching the dejected walk-off. Man, if he hadn't seen that look before. He half-sprinted inside, spotting Alice walking a handful of feet down the second floor to an all-too-familiar nook there.

As he walked over, Lewis' dark eyes surveyed the scene. Sebastian was curled into a ball so tight he could practically be used in gameplay, and Alice looked a bit shaken up as well, which wasn't good. The tall Ravenclaw sank into the floor, plopping down across from the fourth years. "Huf. That was a rough game, wasn't it? It's so much harder to play in wintertime. But... I know that it couldn't have felt very good." He sighed softly, pondering the best thing to say here. "I also know that a lot of people are going to say 'there's always next time' or 'just keep practicing' and, well, neither are super helpful. A lot of them haven't played in our role, which makes it hard to find the right words to say. But, I can say that it's hard. Our job isn't an easy one. Not only is the snitch... well, it's a pain in the arse. But also, a lot of the pressure for perfection gets put on our shoulders, doesn't it?"

At that, he got something of a nod, plus a mumbled "Uh-huh" from Seb. "I know you're a good seeker, Sebastian, even if it doesn't feel like it. I've seen you in practice, when you're really in your element. I've seen you run the pitch when there weren't such heavy stakes. But I also know the toll that comes when you feel like you need a win. When everything is on your shoulders." He reached out, patting Seb's back. After a second, he peeked up a bit, bloodshot green eyes looked over at him. Man, he looked exhausted.

"Let me ask you. Before the games, do you often think about who's all there? About your mum, friends... girlfriend?" Aha, a nod. Thankfully, he still seemed to be paying attention. "I had a feeling. Sometimes that makes things so much harder. Because then, not only do you have to fight for your team, but you feel extra pressure to make those people happy. And even though you know everyone is still going to love you so, so much regardless, it's a bit more disappointing." That got Seb to sit up a bit, though he leaned in a bit closer to Alice. "Y-yea... I just... wanna do good for th-them." Seb added through some broken sniffles. Lewis handed over a small pouch of tissues, then continued.

"But if it helps, just know that all your friends, your mum, your teammates and rivals... everyone is cheering you on. Come win or lose, these people will all still be there with you. Plus, honestly, in school... the points don't really matter. Wins, yea, they're fun... but if anyone ever gets upset with you, they're a butthead. It's not like there's tournaments and quid on the line. Sometimes... sometimes trying to make it less important helps make it easier. There's no stakes during practice, right? So if it helps, pretend the games are practices. Put in your earbuds, block out the sound, and just practice. Your next game's against me, right?" He asked, wanting to make sure Seb was still following along. "Y-yea. Th-the last game."

"Right, and you and I have practiced together plenty too. You've beaten me before in practice, so I know you can do it. Your broom's even faster than mine, to help balance out my noodley arms." Lewis wiggled his arms out to either side, as if to prove their proclaimed noodliness. A laugh, however shaky, left the Gryffindor. "And I bet I can talk Nic into having our two teams play some practice games ahead of the big one. We can probably even invite half the school out to sit in the stands and make some noise. Plus Tàmhas can practice the announcing with Alice and Amelia. I bet they'd like the practice to feel more confident next year too." He nodded and winked over at Alice herself. "Then when the game comes up it'll just be another practice. How's that sound?"

Seb nodded again, feeling a little better. "I-I don't wanna bother everyone. Practices are usually pretty boring." At that, Lewis laughed. "They sure can be, can't they? But if we set it up as more of a game, it'd be less boring. Not to mention, I'm certain that well over half the school would be glad to spend a bit of extra time outside, if only to cheer you on. Ooh, or we can probably rope in the Hufflepuff and Slytherin teams! Maybe do a skirmish or two. Mix and match players so everyone has a bit of a change of pace. Last time the school did that it was a super fun day. Plus, you know Professor Liu. She's always living for chaos." Another laugh, this one followed by a more genuine grin. "That does sound like it'd be a lil chaotic... but also pretty fun. D...do you really think everyone would wanna do that?" Lewis lovingly ruffled Seb's messy navy hair.

"It would totally be fun! And it'd keep Tàmhas and Alice on their toes in the booth."
