Markius shooed the bat away, sensing the arrival of the hostess and host. He smiled wide, his fangs easily exposed. Taking his seat again he waited silently. His mind probed each and every being within the castle, living or dead. Before they even reached the stairs he knew every name, every country of origin, and which ones could pose a threat to him should the worst come to pass. His fingers delicately held onto his antique cane, within was a crystal tube that held enough blood for him to last for at least a month.

Cassandra executed a fairly well built facade of joy as she danced with Valthier. Her new dress swirled around her as she led Valthier around the dance floor. As often as she could, however, she kept an eye on Scarlet and Devonte, carefully tracking their minds. She did not attempt to dig within the stranger's mind, for she did not know whether or not he would feel it. She was waiting for a sign or a signal from Scarlet. Something that would tell her what to do and when to do it. But for now, she continued prancing around, pretending not to have a care in the world.

Markius turned his mind to the human dancers nearby letting his thoughts converge with theirs he saw what they thought; with relative ease he found the mind of another female of fairly young age he forced his will upon her mind. After just a moment he forced her to come to him she sat beside him, entranced until he severed the link. Staring deep into her eyes he commanded her in a hushed whisper, "Remain here and compliment me until the hostess or her brother grace me with their presence." The girl complied, praising in a normal tone his hair, musculature, eyes, etc. Vincent let his mind wander as the girl kept up the ruse, for a moment he sensed hesitance in the older vampire on the dance floor. Focusing he channeled his thoughts to her, "Child, your name is... Cassandra. You can read thoughts... interesting. Feel free to listen or speak with me by way of telepathy, I... prefer it."

"alrigt" she mused, "why do you call me child? I am much older then almost everyone here, and not much younger then yourself, it would seem." If she had bloodflow to speak of, her face would have had a slight flush of irritation. The colors swirled around her, and it was becoming difficult to keep track of Scarlet and Devonte.

"Of course. Wouldn't want to seem rude to our new guest," Ciro said somewhat sarcastically, knowing that there's no way Markius was actually invited. Ciro followed Scarlet to the stairs where the "guest" went. He grinned. "This has truly been a night of new experiences. This should be interesting."

Jamie set down the Thompson so Devonte could care for his arm. "Alright then, and thank you." He winced a little as the antiseptic Devonte was using touched the wound. After the arm was wrapped up and slung, Jamie nodded at Devonte's instructions, "Don't worry, I ain't gonna run. Last time I tried to leave I passed out. I'll wait." Shortly after he finished Devonte turned and left.
"You are an idiot," Alfons stated. "And you're a kraut sonuva b***h," Jamie retorted. "Touché. You still have the info right?" Jamie nodded. Alfons sighed, and then changed the subject, "If you don't mind, may I see your Thompson?

Markius smiled, it had been so long since he had spoken telepathically; "A habit of age. It has been so long since I have spoken to anyone even close to my age. Might I ask your role in this event?" Markius visibly relaxed in his chair the human prattling on with various praises, thankfully her vocabulary was rather extensive and she hadn't repeated herself yet.

"I am merely an invited guest." Cassandra thought at him with some conviction, "And might I ask your role in our so-far splended gathering?" At this point in time, she was chatting with a werewolf over another round of vodka. She was quite the charmer with long white hair, and beautiful blue eyes. She could hold her liquor well, to boot.

"Merely here to be amongst my own kind. Humans lack the with or long sight to interest me to any real degree any more." Markius grinned to the charmed human he then sent her to fetch some red wine. "So which country either former or current, do you hail from, Cassandra?"

Scarlet and Ciro made their way cautiously over to Markius. Ever the perfect hostess, Scarlet gave a shallow curtsy, never taking her eyes off the guest.
"Good evening," she said, her voice devoid of emotion. "What can I do for you?"

Satisfied with the obedience of both his patients, Devonte left the makeshift-hospital room and returned to the chamber where Val and Cassandra had been, only to find them gone. A bit disappointed, he made his way back to the ball. Standing like an imposing cliff face, he noticed one girl looking confused as she made her way towards him.
"Hello," he said.
"Um...Hi?" she replied, as if she was unsure of the proper greeting. "I...My name is Wretch...do I know you?"
Devonte suddenly had a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach.

Markius smiled and tipped his hat in response, offering the other chair with a slight gesture. "Please do sit and enjoy a conversation with me. I assure my attentions are pure and I mean no one, living or dead, any harm."

Ciro stood like a statue next to Scarlet. He noticed that she'd been offered a seat by Markius, but he hadn't. "Eh, I'd rather stand anyway." Ciro turned his head to the right, looking away from the table. Something besides this guy's making me feel uneasy, but what...? Excusing himself for a brief moment, Ciro spoke to a servant. "Near the rear entrance where the scuffle was there should be a USP on the ground. I want you to bring it to me. I paid good money for it." The servant went off and Ciro returned to Scarlet's side as if nothing had occurred.

"Sure," Jamie replied as he gave Alfons the gun. "Hm, .45 ACP, 1928 model, 50--no--100 round mag, full-auto..." Alfons muttered to himself. "It's nice, but wouldn't you rather want something more modern? I can hook you up with some of the best firearms in the world." "My granddad used that gun to fight mobsters back in the 30s. I will never trade it in." "All right all right," Alfons interjected, but I still think you'd like one of my products more."

"Some how, I get the feeling that your definition of 'harm' and mine are very different," Scarlet said wryly. "I enjoy the company of humans, where you seem content to exploit them."
_______________
Devonte eyed the confused woman in front of him. "Perhaps you should lie down, even retire for the evening," he suggested.
"I am exhausted," she said wonderingly as she fell into his arms. Devonte's delicate touch could tell that she was bruised all over, her flesh tender and swelling. She clutched at him with weak fingers and wide, fearful eyes. "Is...is something wrong with me?"
Devonte wanted to curse. It seemed that too many of the guests were falling ill.

"I shall leave your attention for our hostess." were cassandra's last thoughts to the creature. She still was not convinced that he intended no harm to others. He was too smug. She quickly searched the crowd for Devonte, who was helping some poor tortured girl. Not wanting to seem suspicious, she decided not to interfere, and focused her full attention on Valthier and the werewolf girl.

"Very well then." Markius smiled in reply, "Humans have grown weak with industry. Their children live when they should die. They pervert the natural order even more than we do. Think about it, we are predators, smart elegant and with singular purpose. Industry and other human creations pervert the cycle. The old humans should die from disease, plague, pandemic and yet they thrive." A bat landed on Markius' shoulder and squeaked something into his ear the ancient vampire chuckled before sending the bat on his way. "Why would you enjoy the company of that which would destroy us at every corner? I only use them as a tool like any cunning predator would. I only harm in self defense, after all the older you are the less blood one needs, I haven't drained a human dry in nearly two centuries." Markius smiled not bothering to conceal his fangs.
Markius expanded his mind for a split second before retracting his thoughts, "Ciro do please sit, I do fear that my courtesies are.. dated and I tend to the company of a lady before that of a gentleman." Markius gestured to the remaining seat, "Please do sit."

"Yet the extraordinary survival of humans and their boom in population is beneficial to us. It is easier to hide our presence amid the millions. Also, the feeding selections have increased as the herd increases. From a cultural point of view, often with humans, physical strength trades off with mental skill, so even though the weaker specimens survive, they are often more intelligent, and therefore more fun to play with," she pointed out. "But if you like the simpler life, there are still plenty of primitive places you can lord over. No need to crash a multi-species ball like my own. For my part, they amuse me. You know the old saying 'there's nothing new under the sun,' but I've enjoyed the variety of permutations that have survived in the last two centuries."
