Cindy sighed, how was she to explain something like that.
"It is safe here, but that is because of the fighters and people like Aragost."
This world wasn't perfect after all, the Seconds world was the closest thing to perfect but even then it had its issues.

Vergil thought about that for a moment, but when he thought about it all it meant for him was that there was danger outside of the ranch, and that was why the fighters kept them safe.
"Are there fighters where we live?" he asked Cindy in a small voice. "Or isn't it safe there? I didn't see any fighters there, and you said they're here ..."
Did that mean that the valley in which they lived was unprotected?

Cindy smiled reassuringly at Vergil, "There are fighters here, Halmir the man you had met is a fighter, and so is his wife. They and the other fighters live in the barracks."
She had never felt unsafe but Cindy had grown use to having a few surprises up her sleeves.

"But the barracks aren't at our house!" Vergil protested. "What about over there? That's a long way from here! Are there fighters there too?"
He didn't like the feeling of panic that was rising in his chest, but he couldn't help it. If something were to happen over in the valley, the fighters wouldn't even know about it, let alone get there in time to do any good! They were simply too far away!

"Their patrols take them somewhat close to where we are," Cindy replied, "Don't worry besides we're not so helpless."
He seemed so brave before, but then again he was a small person in a large world so Cindy couldn't blame him.

"You too?" Vergil brightened up at the thought. "You're a good fighter, too? What kind of fighting do you do? I can use my sword, I'm pretty good at it, but it's kind of a small sword because I'm so small, so ... I don't think I could fight big people like your size or anything ..."
Maybe someday he would grow - though admittedly he had hoped to grow a long time ago. In terms of his kind, he could have been an adult by his age.

"Well... I'm not much of a fighter, but I do have a few things to defend myself," Cindy admitted.
One didn't live with a family where something always happened and not be at least a bit prepared. She still prepared somehow the defensive and attack potions she originally made. Since being here she also came up with a potion that would make a flash bang if thrown to the ground, which was good if you needed to run away.

Vergil blinked up at Cindy. "Defend yourself?" he asked in amazement. "How can you defend yourself if you can't fight?"
He knew of no other method of defense. Though he was a Second, he had never seen any of the goddesses, and he knew nothing of magic.

"Using potions and magic of course," Cindy giggled, "I'm much better at that than at fighting."
And she knew a thing or two about potions, not just the healing variety. She knew how to make them do things most wouldn't consider normal.

Vergil blinked at Cindy. He had never heard of either of those, didn't know what they were.
"What's that?" he asked. "How would that help you?"

"Magic is the ability to do something normally physically you cannot," Cindy replied.
Which was probably the only way she could explain it.
"Potions for me, is part of my magic," she continue to explain, "I can't explain how exactly it helps me because magic can do many things depending on what you learned, sometimes the way you were born or simply what your mind comes up with."

"Can you show me how that all works someday, Mother?" Vergil asked as they drew near the barracks. "I don't know anything about it, but I think it might be good for me to know ... just in case I don't grow anymore, because even though I know how to use my sword really good, it's too small and I'm too small to defend myself very well ... everyone here is so big ..."
Back in the Seconds world, he and his brother had fought and killed demons ... but the demons had been the same size as them, not like the people here.

Cindy nodded at this, "Someday...."
She couldn't imagine not doing so, not when Seconds were very magical beings, they all could use magic if they wished. Though she wasn't sure how she was going to teach Vergil magic.

"Okay," Vergil smiled up at Cindy. He was glad that he would be able to learn some magic just like her.
He looked up at the door of the barracks as they approached it. "Is that where we're going in?" he asked, looking up at Cindy. "What's it like in there? Are there lots of people in there?"

"There are a lot of people in there, but there are a lot of rooms in there for them to live in, and the hallway is quite dark."
Cindy held Vergil in one arm before reaching in her pouch to grab a particular bottle. She shook it a few times to get it started before walking into the black hallway.
