Her shoulders lowered in defeat. It was worth a shot. "Yes..." she answered, pulling her knees up. "Ah- What I mean to say is, yes, you may sit down next to me... sir."
Coline buried her face into the space between her chest and her knees. She was a disgruntled mess, and meeting with the Captain outside of training wasn't something she was used to. Shuddering slightly at the sudden gust of wind, the fawn-haired lass braced herself for the worst.

All good is hard, and all evil is easy. Dying, losing... Jessie sat down and folded his legs. His posture, always straight, seemed rigid and stiff when in this pose, for any human would have been slumping. He began to say something about obviously needing to talk more about looking after her body, but when he looked at the dejected girl hunched and shivering beside him the words dried up.
He watched her a while, before turning back to the sea. Minutes passed by in silence, the sounds of the wind and the waves filling it; in the hollow way that background noise does.
Glancing back at her, he moved to mimic her position, pulling up his knees and wrapping his arms around them. The pose looked casual, but to him it felt somewhat awkward. No matter. He rested his chin on top of his knees and began to study the sun-streaked sky with interest, watching for minutes as the colours played together and slowly changed.
"How far do you think it goes on for?" ...Cheating and mediocrity are easy. Stay away from easy.

Lifting her head up slowly, she regarded him in a sort of surprise. The Captain sitting beside her felt very much different from the stern combat instructor she knew. He appeared so... casual... approachable. To the point that she felt it safe to set aside formality.
Coline eased her chin back down and extended her arm out, as if trying to reach for the heavens. "I don't know..." she muttered, eyes fixated on the sky above. "It seems like it could go on forever..."

All good is hard, and all evil is easy. Dying, losing... The drow's reply was grim. "I have heard similar sentiments expressed elsewhere."
He looked at the sky a few moments longer, before shuddering and turning to stare down at the sand, suddenly distasteful, if not disturbed.
He continued to speak, albeit much more quietly than usual, and in an offhand way. "If there is one thing that terrifies me, it is the boundlessness of this mortal world. The beautiful ceiling... if not a ceiling... I mean, the alternative is..." he grimaced slightly, shuddering again "... too terrible to contemplate." ...Cheating and mediocrity are easy. "Alternative?" Coline repeated, gazing at her superior with curious eyes. She couldn't quite grasp what the Captain was trying to say. After seeing as how disturbed he seemed to be it made her feel a tad guilty not being able to muster something more uplifting.
But as curious as she was, she soon figured this wasn't something she should be inquiring about.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to pry." she continued, her gaze shifting back to the crashing waves. "There is so little I know about you... and your world."

((S'okay, lmao. After this post I'ma hafta run out to my mum's house, but I'll be back on mah laptop =) )) All good is hard, and all evil is easy. Dying, losing... The Captain breathed out sharply, turning his body towards her but keeping his eyes fixed downwards. He spoke a litte more loudly this time. "No, it's my fault for not being clear. Obviously I had intended it much more as an inward observation. I simply meant that... well."
He looked at her sharply, but he seemed more curious than anything. "You've said that the world may go on forever, without limit. Isn't that a little unsettling? A container with no end? An endless space, a crushing void?"
His red eye flickered, and he turned away again. "That's the jist of it, I suppose. It may just be me, though. I come from a place full of restrictions, physical and social. It is a dangerous place... but somehow, when I begin to think, this world is ten times more deadly than the dark realm I have called my home." ...Cheating and mediocrity are easy. ((They're just talking. ^^; ))
Coline laughed softly. Now she understood. "Then your home isn't that far off from mine." her eyes shifted downward, legs parting slightly as she stared at the sand. "Though I'm not sure if you could really call it that..."
She traced over the sand with her finger and continued, her tone and expression thoughtful. "I was confined to four walls for most of my life. Everyday went by just like any other. It felt... empty. I felt like I served no other purpose than what I had been back then. I would have stayed that way had I chosen to, but..." Placing her hands on the ground for support, Coline leaned back as she stretched her legs out. "It's by venturing into this dangerous boundless world that I found my life's meaning."
"Everything that I've gained, everything that I've accomplished ever since I broke free from those four walls. Just thinking of what my life would be without them..." she turned to the drow, "I find that more terrifying than anything in the whole world."

(( YEAH, BAPP. THEY'RE JUST TALKING. LIEK, GAWD. rolleyes *hand creeping up Nii's thigh* )) All good is hard, and all evil is easy. Dying, losing... The Captain just stared at her.
"I... I had no idea you had experienced a life like that," he said quietly, respectfully. "I was never truly imprisoned, though it was quietly accepted that I would never be able to leave. Were you held against your will...?" ...Cheating and mediocrity are easy. Stay away from easy.

"Eh heh... My past is not something I freely share with others." she said, her eyes averting for a moment as she pondered. "But no, I wasn't truly held against my will. It was more like... I had nowhere else to go. I had no reason to leave," a small pause, "Until I received that letter."
The young recruit took a moment to savor the cool ocean breeze. "Captain?" There was an unusual silence before she spoke again. "If you think this world is such a dangerous place, then why did you leave home?"
((Feel free to have him evade the question if you don't know Jessie's history. xP))

(( I pulled most of this from the REAL Jessie's profile, combined with my own knowledge of drow society )) All good is hard, and all evil is easy. Dying, losing... His tone was almost apologetic. "Well, of course I had no idea what it was like. Only that there was something up above. A world I could never have imagined. To be honest, I couldn't imagine a world full of light, so in my mind it was just... a cavern with a lot more braziers around."
A twist of amusement had crossed his face - it soon died, however. "Drow society is very cruel. Much more cruel than the harsh landscape we call our home. There is no word for the intrigue, the espionage, the sheer corruption of the Houses. There are no ties between families, no marriages, no friendships. There are no treaties, only unsteady truces kept only so long as one House sees it fit."
He continued in a grim, unwavering undertone. "I was not born to a high family. This, on reflection, did not make things any easier for me. My mother was just as cruel as any Valsharess. As I have said before, there are... very strict social customs. A wrong word to a person higher ranking than you will earn you execution. A wrong look by a man to a woman will earn him castration."
"Yes, unfortunately I was twice cursed; low-ranking, and male. Good for nothing but procreation and cannon fodder. Chattel." He spat the final word out in disgust. Seeming to recover control, he turned his head away from Coline, a great mixture of negative emotions knotting his youthful face. His story finished abruptly, with the dismissive quality Coline had heard him use whenever he was in a hurry for some experience to end.
"So I left. And as a result I may never go back."

(( Wait. I think I got it wrong. please don't comment on the bit about his ranking, because it may be wrong - it says on his profile he was born to a "low" family, and I just remembered that high and low are reversed for Drows, if I'm correct - e.g, Low Priestess instead of High Priestess. I'm not sure, though. I'll have to look it up, on my incredibly slow connection, and then change it to reflect... ))
