Vashan had gotten into the habit of following her gaze. She seemed to know the place very well, though it didn't make it much safer, in his mind. He had always been used to going it alone, and as opposed to seeing camaraderie as strengthening, it was very much like adding extra load to a ship that would travel much faster empty.
Many things were going on, and he was not used to being paid attention to. Only old man Santana would ever have asked him to help with shipments, or maybe give him a wayward word whenever he arrived on that familiar island.
This woman was like that man, though secretly he wondered if she would stay a bit longer before heading off on another journey to the ocean.
She looked a bit distracted as she started her words, so he let himself divert his gaze so as not to bother her. He nodded uneasily at the accuracy of her words, unsure how to say that this simple conversation was probably the most overwhelming of all. Instead, he stayed silent and brought his eyes back just in time to catch her gaze.
"It'll be pretty hard for me to get used to the cold," he explained quietly, taking his hermit-like mannerisms out of the picture. "But I've been hoping-"
Her comment had registered in his mind, and his speech cut off instantaneously, and his eyes darkened. It was the kind of thing his girl would have said before heading off to deal with the gangs, and he could not, for the life of him, decide how to respond.
"I-it would be nice to m-meet up again," he started again quietly, a pained tone in his voice. "H-hopefully unmasked, next time."

"Oh...."
Too late for that, thought Johannes, as he looked down (at his stomach, firstly) and pondered what in the world was Ouzo.
Johannes had been seating down for a while, moving his legs as to do something in the meantime. "Maybe I should go back in there..." Johannes was feeling bad about missing out on what people were doing in the ballroom by fault of his own drunkeness. Especially when he thinks about what happened with the feathered woman. "Ay-yi-yi-yi...." "Just steer clear of the bar this time."
He got up and put the empty glass previously filled with water on teh chair. He put his helmet back on and straightened his beard and mask a bit.
"Right, let's try this again," said Johannes as he was walking back into the ballroom.

"I-it's a great thing! It's great!" Rodney's voice had piped with earnestness. Discovery was a remarkable thing. He enjoyed learning. He enjoyed the experience of the unfamiliar, however uncomfortable or awkward it tended to be. There was something invigorating about it. "I don't know what else I would do with my time without it."
Rodney had felt a twinge of happiness. He hadn't been dancing in such a long time. It was a good night. Cola, dancing, and funny costumes. If it weren't for the itchy sack, he believed he could call it a wonderful experience. He had quieted down somewhat, clearing his throat as he took Shee's hand to lead her out into the room for a dance.
"It's been a while. But where I come from? Dancing is everywhere. Dancing, cows, and machines." He had forgotten that he was supposed to be hiding, pausing only a moment to take Shee's hands as if to show her a particular form. "Of course, you can't always call it dancing. Some hold. Formal is the only way to go. Waltzes and things of that nature." He had shaken his head to himself. "I'm surprised you don't know how. Have you never been asked to dance before?"

"You should not let Midori hear you speak so. She's quite partial to guns of all kinds. I, of course, have never really understood why."
Surprised, he looked curiously at the burger. "You would say such things of your own city? I have never met a Parisien quite like you." He was distracted once again by talk of Anjou. "Oh, Anjou is a duchy. It is wonderfully green, being in the Loire Valley." He thought of the grounds almost wistfully, forcefully omitting the courts and the palaces that he had left feeling so ambivalently about. He tilted his head at her admission. "But I imagine you've been to some interesting places since you arrived? You have been here for a while, have you not? Myself... you could say that I have seen enough of the world." Many times over, he thought privately. "A ship? I am afraid I am not much one for ships and the sea." He laughed at the thought of him commandeering a ship.
"Consolation, my friend! You should not mope so much. Hopefully we can get your mind off these depressing things." He sensed a sort of hesitation on the other man's part, and turned around to face him, frowning. "If you are not going to help, you could, at the least, unmask another."
Eknephias, rather gracefully for a man pretending to be drunk, inserted himself between Sebastien and Eponine. "May I?"
Without waiting for an answer, Eknephias, grabbed a protruding arm of the hamburger and spun away from a confused Sebastien. Whispering to the hamburger, who he had long ago surmised was the unseen skittish French girl, he leaned in rather close. "Why hide such a pretty face behind all of this?"
Thasios only smiled slightly again at Lai's question as the man was distracted by someone's singing. As Lai turned from them, his attentions clearly elsewhere, Thasios leaned and bent down, imparting a soft, barely audible whisper in Hyo's ear.
"Your story is an interesting one, Hyo. I would like to hear it sometime."
The last word, in lilting, perfect Korean, left his lips without a trace of an accent as he turned without looking back at the boy and strode into the crowd, disappearing without effort as bolder colours drowned out his, and he could not be seen anymore.
Wraith shook his head slowly and mechanically at Estrelas's response. "Really? I never would have guessed." He couldn't help it; it had been on his mind since he'd seen her. Although, in his experience, there probably wasn't an answer. Not one that made any logical sense, anyway. "Why a hamburger?"
Shee giggled as he talked about formality. She knew she was supposed to be acting formal, but she couldn't help it. It was... not something that aligned very well with her nature. At least, not if it didn't have to.
"Dancing, cows, and machines? An unneccessary clue. I already figured out who you are!" Pleased with her success, she gave little thought to his question. "I don't know. Never really had too much time to do anything, much less to find an excuse to dance." That wasn't true. She'd been to countless parties as a diplomat, but had avoided dancing always. Looking like a fool was not all that conducive to any goal she could think of. "Well..." she hesitated. "I don't think I have." But she felt that wasn't quite right.

Mokoyis ran her fingers through her half fallen curls; styles never held in her thick hair. She noted the strain in his voice and tucked it away to be puzzled out later. Her Vashan file was almost as full as her Eponine file now.
"Unmasked would probably help," she flashed him a quick grin. "I don't normally walk around with feathers on my clo-," She stopped short and blushed. She did in fact often walk around with feathers on her clothing, or at least as part of her jewelry. "Well actually I do, but they are not nearly so grand as this." She plucked at the white gown and reached to take a sip of the water the bartender had finally brought over.

The hamburger bobbed up and down solemnly. "I won't," she said. Midori... That was the colorful girl, right? She made a mental note not to act so much like the book Eponine if they should meet. Oh, and to wear a hamburger costume- it was like magic the way it made her all calm and cheerful! Within the giant hamburger half, the constant fear about the Manager and her robotic innards blissfully faded away. Hey, maybe she could wear the costume all the time?
"It's ugly," she insisted. "We all say it is. In the summer it's hot and the whole city and in the winter everyone freezes." The hamburger tilted precariously as she pondered his description of Anjou. "That must be lovely," she sighed. Loire Valley- was that in the north? Or the east? Or the west? Thankfully a poor street waif would most likely not know geography that well. "Sort of," she admitted. "Ever since coming here, I've been places I never thought I'd even see. We went to America once! We took a boat- but hey! But I thought all rich people went around on boats!" she exclaimed, feigning surprise. "If not the ocean, do you have parties on boats on the river? I heard that people do things like that-"
Eponine had been acting very normal this evening. And even more stunning, she had been outgoing, as in talking to a total stranger without screaming red-hot panic. She had surpressed her paranoia to a managable level, thanks to the security of the costume and her illusion that no one could tell who she was. Estrelas, in anticipation of Eponine meeting 'lots and lots and lots of good men,' had even taught her how to politely brag about how many sheep her father had. In other words, Eponine had been not paranoidly shy. And she was just beginning to have a good time when someone grabbed her arm.
RED ALERT! RED ALERT! THEATRE PROPERTY IS IN DANGER!
With a sharp squeal, Eponine's arm yanked up with robotic force and her legs skittered in different directions. She forgot about 'standards of human behavior' and 'what is physically possible for a human,' including accidently bending her elbow backwards a little to try to escape from the new man.
Naturally, Estrelas suddenly flipped around, falling off of the barstool with half a glass of strong alcohol in hand. The hamburger cushioned her fall, but as she struggled to right herself with her legs kicking the ground, one arm shot out and hurled the glass with depressingly bad accuracy at Eknephias.
"YOU RUDE MAN YOU LET GO OF HER! YOU RUN! YOU RUN! I HURT YOU IF YOU TOUCH HER! YOU GET HANDS OFF OF HER! I HURT YOU!" Estrelas shrieked furiously, using the other arm to founderingly roll over to the pair. "WHY YOU NOT PROTECT HER, FRANCE MAN? YOU SEE GIRL BEING ATTACK SO YOU HIT OTHER MAN! WHY YOU STUPID?" She managed to close half of the distance before flopping over the wrong way. "Oof!"

"Flying f--"
Eknephias couldn't see anything anymore. The glass the other hamburger half had thrown in his direction had fortunately (or unfortunately, considering the situation) missed him by several metres, instead soaking the nearby Thasios as it hit the wall and the other Greek man was spattered with its contents.
He was falling to the floor, being knocked back by more strength than he'd imagined a little French girl to have. His eyes narrowed dangerously as he heard shouts in his direction, and he attempted to grab onto the thing in front of him, blocking his view of everything in a pretense of preventing his body from hitting the ground. He'd made sure to grab at a place on the hamburger he thought was some sort of seam or zipper. It would work better that way. If she thought she was any stronger than he was, she was mistaken.
Sebastien closed his eyes, groaning, trying to drown out the sounds of Estrelas and Eknephias and the rest of them. He wasn't sure if he wanted to open them again; Eknephias wasn't even drunk this time. Masked though he was, it could not have been anyone else. Apprehensively, one eye opened and then the other to see Estrelas rolling around on the floor, abusing him and Eknephias roundly, blocking his view of the spectacle of the other two. She would learn. You generally did not hit your teammates, especially those as senior-- and as volatile- as Eknephias. He was struck with a sudden terror at what would happen should Estrelas decide that she herself wanted to hit the other man. He walked quickly over to her and bent down, ready in case anything happened. "Mademoiselle Estrelas, that is Monsieur Eknephias. He is an Elite member of LOTUS, and Eponine is is no real danger. It would be best if you were calm."
Twice in one evening. Thasios sighed and moved towards the door. He wasn't going to come back this time, no matter how upset Shee would be.

Well now, this was turning out to be more fun than Einar had thought. He didn't really have to do anything in order to get the harpies raving on and on like they were, the larger and louder o the two making enough fuss to rouse the dead, and when the burger bits went flying he couldn't help but suppress a chuckle. It didn't do though and it burst out, his hand cupped over his mask like that was going to do him any real good.
His laughter was loud, louder than it needed to be, but then again Einar needed to laugh a lot more than he had been. Lately he'd just been reading book after book and forsaking the contact of others, and what with Lai earlier all but snubbing him off because he didn't know who he was, this was like food for the soul. Of course his mask still muffled a good bit of it, but it was able to echo around the room like the cawing of a crow in flight - a haunting sound. Did Einar really have such a creepy laugh, enough to turn any thoughts of who he was away from him?
"Ah, man, this is...a little too much. The harpies, the drinks, it's better than watching a comedy show. Man, all we need now is for someone to trip and fall and hurt themselves, or some clothes to come bursting off."
But on that note, Einar took a look and noticed a certain someone was making their way back into the room, someone he didn't really want to see much of for the time being. While he knew Lai was just being honest because he didn't know it was Einar under the mask, the fact that he had said what he'd said made no difference - not to mention Einar had been just as much of an a**. It wasn't right at the moment, so it was time to go.
"On that note, I'll take my leave. I've got better things to do now that I've gotten my fill of drink and laughter for the night."

Lai was so bound in the voice he did not witness Thasios' departure. His head turned and his eyes scanned, but he could not pinpoint the song. Soon after, it seemed to die away and was replaced by chatter once more. The Russian sighed, how he was longing (but why?) to see the Norwegian again.
Realizing that, hey, he wasn't originally alone he turned back to Hyo and the now gone Thasios. He blinked when he saw the other man had vanished but did not ponder why the other had left. Lai looked down at his temporary charge and smiled at the girl who was standing in very close proximity to him. He made to mime a plate and the motion of eating to ask or suggest if Hyo wanted food, but before he could raise his hands any higher than a few inches the noise from the group across the room made him turn around once more.
"Looks like something happened again..." The laughter from Einar sent a shock up his spine; what an unnatural sound, though it could be the reverberations off the walls that gave it that goosebumps inducing edge. The Russian had no idea who could produce such a laugh, nor heard Einar laugh before, so he was stumped. Despite that, he could just see what was going on with the 'hamburger' and at least three others and it was not what he had originally imagined the evening to be. It was not good that the food costume, still split apart, was on the move, so the best idea Lai could think of was see if he could get Hyo to depart for the evening, with plans to meet again.
"Come this way Miss Hyo." Lai made a matching gesture with his hand and walked to a short table with a cup of pens on it. He passed another with napkins and took one from the stack before taking a pen in his right hand. With a few short motions he wrote a quick note on the paper like material and handed it to Hyo. It read;
'Library, 10am Tuesday, English' with a small sun drawn next to the time to show he meant ten o'clock in the morning. The Russian knew the library had a plaque next to the door that said 'Library' on it, so he wrote that down very clearly and with the letters spaced a bit apart. His intentions were to continue the English lesson the two had started and he had figured what better place than the library? He smiled and spoke over the mash of voices.
"Go to the library room at that time," He pointed to the written 'Library' and '10am' with the sun drawing. "And we shall continue your lesson." He made the hand gesture for speaking, a flat hand to the mouth then out at an arc, after he pointed to 'English'. Hopefully the girl understood and knew where the library was and the day chosen.
"It is late now." He pointed up and to a window where the heavy darkness pressed against the glass. "And you must be tired." Lai stretched and made a yawning motion. As host he couldn't leave yet, but best to get the others out, especially the fragile Hyo, and wrap this Masquerade up. Gently he ushered the girl in the horned mask to the door, patted her once on the head, and bowed.
"Have a safe trip back Miss Hyo, and I do hope you sleep well. Thank you once again for the embroidery." He patted the inner breast pocket over his heart where the handkerchief was, folded and safe. The Russian smiled once again before turning and leaving the girl to her own device, going to find a broom and start cleaning the corners if he had to. As he moved he spotted that same man in the white mask and glanced at him as the other passed by, headed for the door. No words uttered, but Lai still wondered who was beneath the opaque white surface and if he would get an apology for the way that individual reacted earlier.
"Probably not." He continued on his way without a second look.

"Why did I come in here again?" "Oh, that's right. To attempt to converse with someone again."
Unfortunately, Johannes wasn't even sure whether someone might be interested in that -- due to the fact that apparently the thing[/] and its other half (he heard it was a hamburger, who knows?) were making more noise than hens and many people seemed to be either screaming or yelling in response.
"Right...I expected too much. Again."
"Oh, well" said Johannes as he shrugged his shoulders and made his way to a seat. "I'll just fix my boots and make my way to the bar again." "I'm assuming this might all be over soon enough."

Riiiiiiiiiiiiip.
For a moment, Eponine just stood there, blinking like an owl caught in headlights. The hamburger half had torn down the side and the whole thing fell to her knees. Then all her circuits starting firing, sending very distressed messages to her CPU, like... They know who you are now. You're uncovered. You're naked except for underwear and a pair of tights. Your ribs are showing. You look like a victim of starvation. They can see you. They can see you-
The nice feeling she had inside the costume and dancing and talking completely vanished beyond memory. She felt.. Felt... Felt like someone had turned around and personally kicked her. Hurt. That was the word. Hurt and very afraid. This was too much for her to even run away. Eponine took one lip-trembling look about the room, then covered her face with her hands and started bawling, bawling, bawling, crying as if it were the end of the world.
Right then, Estrelas lost all modesty and restraint.
Riiiiiiiiiiiip. The encumbering costume slid off of her as she tore open the velcro seam on the side, and despite her 15th century ideas of modesty, Estrelas roared out of the costume and rushed to her friend's aid. Quickly, she enveloped Eponine in her arms.
Estrelas had never been this angry before. Her entire face was creased like a volcanic island erupting. Below her dark skin, her blood pounded, deafening her to common sense.
Estrelas thrust an accusing finger to Sebastian and his companion. For a moment, her jaw just worked the air angrily as she fumed. Then...
"HOW YOU DARE? HOW YOU DARE?" she shrieked in a horrible, ear-grating voice. "You!" She spun to Eknephias. "What you think you do? You think it funny to make fun of girl? You think it funny to take her clothe? You think it funny to udderly humililililiate her like this? What Eponine ever do to you? She never do anything bad! You bad man, to be so mean to nice girl like Epaninny!"
Eponine recovered a bit enough to panic- "Ah- Est-"
"AND YOU!" Estrelas stomped her foot and glared at Sebastian. "You fool me! You fool me! Ah thought you good man! Good man for Epaninny! Ah thought finally Epaninny meet good boy with many goat! Finally decent boy! Not like TRASH!" Estrelas roared, spittle soaring out of her mouth like dribblets of rather insanitary avenging eagles. "BUT NO! YOU TAKE ADVANTAD OF GIRL WHO TRUST YOU! YOU TAKE GIRL WHO FINALLY WANT TO HAVE FUN AND YOU RUIN! YOU RUIN!" she shrieked, swinging her arm furiously.
"Ah! Estie-" Eponine squeaked pitifully. "Let's just-"
"SHAMESHAMESHAMESHAME ON YOU!" Estrelas howled.
Eponine squeezed her eyes shut as she prepared to pack her and Estrelas' bags in anticipation of a firing. Maybe if she ran to Wraith very fast, she could explain before things got out of hand-
"NOW YOU LAUGH! HAHA! YOU THINK IT FUNNY, YOU DO! MAKE HER CRY, AND YOU LAUGH! YOU THINK IT FUNNY! WELL IT NOT FUNNY TO HER!" Estrelas continued, pointing with her free hand to Eponine. "YOU ASK HER, SHE THINK IT FUNNY? JUST BECAUSE EPANINNY NO LIKE TELLING PEOPLE NO NOT MEAN SHE THINK IT FUNNY!"
Survival skills suddenly kicked in. Eponine momentarily stopped sobbing to hiccup something along the lines of "let's not make a scene, oh God we are in trouble- so sorry, so sorry" before Estrelas kicked back.
"ANGEL!" she barked and made a clicking sound in the back of her throat.
The dramatic effect was ruined as for a few minutes, Angel continued eating things laying around the garbage and ignored Estrelas.
"ANGELLE!" Estrelas snapped again, flushing even more. Finally, the rabbit/chicken snorted derisively and slowly hopped towards Estrelas.
Eponine covered her face with her hands. Just as she was getting used to LOTUS... Oh God, she had to make a personal apology- in person! The thought of it made her duck her head again.
"WELL YOU GO UNDRESS OTHER GIRL! MAYBE SHE THINK IT FUNNY! BUT AH NO THINK IT FUNNY! NIGHT-TIME!" Estrelas swirled around and started to defiantly stomp away with her head held high.
"Estrelas? Ah... The... Exit's that way," Eponine whispered.
"WELL GOOD." Estrelas declared. She put an arm around Eponine's shoulders, slung the two halves of the costume around her own shoulders, and walked to the door.
As they passed through the doorframe and into the hallway, Eponine felt as if she should thank Estrelas for.. for... For something she wasn't sure what it was. Or maybe she should explain to Estrelas that they were probably in trouble now. She settled for staying silent as Estrelas stomped all the way back to their rooms, Angel reluctantly following.

Eknephias winced as the darker woman's tirade swept over him. Blah blah blah. He'd heard it all before. He hadn't counted on her bursting into tears though. He thought he might feel a tiny bit of remorse for that. But he had just been having fun, trying to liven up the mood and make it a real party. No one could blame him for that.
He was on the ground, sprawled out in a mess of silks and hamburger foam. He stretched languidly, and looked up at Estrelas's furious face, flicking his eyes almost immediately to the more distressed one of Eponine.
"Hey, it's your choice whether you wanted to be humiliated or not. If you'd just be more receptive to," and here, he have a little, punctuating cough, "fun, it would have worked out much better. Besides, who blames the drunk?" He gave them both a lopsided grin, cat-like and presenting a challenge.
Sebastien blinked slowly. The sounds around him were slowly fading, being blocked out into a dull roar by Estrelas's screaming voice, which was distorted, changing pitch and volume regularly, morphing into someone else's voice altogether. Useless. Trash. That was more what he was accustomed to, he thought bitterly. He had never been any good, as the Duke had reminded him incessantly. And he'd almost begun to believe that maybe the Duke had been mistaken.
It had been his choice to let Eknephias interject, and it was his fault that the poor girl Eponine was standing there, tears running down her face. He had ruined everything.
His eyes blank, they followed the pair as they walked out of the room, leaving Eknephias on the floor and a group of people who had been surrounding them rather shocked.
He felt like himself again in an instant, the Duke's voice, mingling now with Henri's, vanishing from his mind and the noise of the masquerade replacing it easily. He glanced quickly at Eknephias and then towards the door as he began to run in the direction that Eponine had gone. Outside in the hallway, he slowed as he saw it deserted and his footsteps shattered the silence that he now found himself in.
"Eponine?" His voice, a touch of desperation colouring his intonation, echoed through the hall.
He was not used to doing things without thinking; he realized belatedly that she hadn't even told him her name.

Vashan felt like he needed to smile. He needed to give something to this girl, who was trying in honest to hold a conversation. Except he hadn't earnestly smiled at anyone for a long, long time now. The most he could do was reach up and play with his mask for a bit, then nod curtly. He ran his tongue over his teeth and reached for the water, tipping the glass over onto his dry lips when-
Oh, geez, what-
He spilled the whole thing over his costume. Chaos had ensued in the middle of the ballroom, and he was left gaping like a fish, the craziness of the place he had just condemned himself to not fully registered in his mind. He gave a hesitant, shaky glance at Mokoyis, as if to ask for answers, before looking back at the scene that now resembled a foreign porn play more than ever. His expression darkened at the sight of Eponine so lightly dressed, the color of her hair and her eyes reminding him too much of the girl he had left behind.
He spun back in his chair, closed his eyes and breathed deeply, not wanting to think about it too much. His legs were cold and sticky underneath the fabric, and the darkened robe clung to his sides revealingly, hiding nothing about the firm build he had attained over the years of helping the sailors at the harbor.
Everyone else was retiring to their room, and his instincts told him he should have followed, but a part of him resonated with guilt at leaving the feathered lady behind. He bit his lip, caught in between.

The first yell made her jump and she resisted the urge to hide behind her new friend. Instead she balled her the skirt of her dress in her hands and tried to peer through her befeathered mask at the commotion. Estrelas seemed to have things in control, though she couldn't really see from her spot in the dim light. Well screw it, most people had left the ball anyways and if she couldn't see she couldn't pass on the gossip later. She hadn't seen Lokari yet, and the girl would likely find the story amusing. Careful of the glue and string she pulled the mask off her face.
It certainly served the drunkard right- getting the rough side of Estrelas' tongue was something she would like to avoid. Mokoyis was tempted to laugh aloud, but it would be rather bad manners so she managed to keep her face carefully blank and turned back to her forgotten companion as the two women left the room.
He looked uncomfortable, and her mirth faded. Poor boy, she had been with LOTUS for a long time and was used to...scenes...like this. "Bed time?" He was wet from the water and that couldn't be fun to sit in. She picked up her mask and slid off of her bar stool.

Vashan glanced over, cold and bitter, but he stayed silent. He was a little more reassured that the girl appeared at least a little perturbed at the ruckus, or he'd really have to assume that LOTUS was like this every day. The thought gave him a headache, and he glanced up momentarily to catch her delicately removing her mask. His breath caught in his throat and he looked away instantly, as if she was undressing herself.
But, immediately, he realized that there was nothing wrong with that and brought his slightly mask-obscured gaze back to be met with the face of his companion for the night.
A strong chin, and beautiful black hair that he hadn't noticed as much as he noticed it now. Without the feathers, she appeared more simple, pure, almost. Her face was gaunt and adamant, almost, like a powerful animal. She looked capable, prideful and a little stern, nothing like the fiery sugar angel he had met back in Jamaica.
At her comment, he let out a sigh, his relief a bit too apparent.
"Yeah, that's probably a good idea," he affirmed quietly, slipping off the the stool with a little less finesse at his wetness.
Suddenly, as if realizing something, he reached up hesitantly and removed his own mask out of courtesy, revealing the stony expression that soon gave way to an almost-smile of contentment.
"It was... unexpected, but thank you for accompanying me tonight," his voice continued, a little guiltily as they almost seemed to be the only pair at the disastrous event leaving happily. Then, like an afterthought, "My name's Vashan."
