Remus grinned, finding Wendy's pout incredibly endearing, and sat down beside her. "I'm sure they didn't hear a thing," he assured her. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and gave her a light squeeze. "Besides, I'm a marauder. If they did hear, I'm an expert at...well, cowering and begging for my life, to be honest."

Wendy giggled, smiling a little and feeling slightly better about the situation. She gave him a peck on the cheek. "How very chivalrous," she said. "I needn't fear anything now I have you to cower and beg in such knightly fashion."

Remus grinned, flecking a bit of dust off his shoulder. "Of course! How could it be anything but knightly? I'm Remus Lupin, for goodness' sake. My name in itself is just amazing." And ironic, but we're not thinking about that right now.
PostPosted: Tue Dec 30, 2008 9:48 pm

Wendy laughed. "Sure is! I bet your name alone could've defeated King Arthur himself in a joust!" she agreed. She wrapped her arms around him and snuggled close to him, now finding it unbearable to be farther than a few inches away from him.

Mmm... Yes, I like this. I like this very much.

It was not to last, however: from downstairs came the sound of someone Apparating in the kitchen, and then Wendy's father's voice called her name up the stairs.

"Coming!" she called back down. She took a deep breath. "Oh, I hope to the powers that be the boys didn't hear anything... If they did I will be in for it like you wouldn't believe..." she groaned before pulling the trapdoor back open and making her way down.

Remus grinned sympathetically. "Want me to come along with you?" he offered. His entire stomach was curled up in one massive knot at the prospect of her brothers hearing them and telling her father. Her father was a quiet man, but in the ominous, calm-before-the-storm sort of way when angry; Remus was sure of it.

Wendy deliberated. It would make more sense if he stayed since her father might have his Christmas gift in tow... Then again, Remus hadn't really wrapped his, either... And the moral support would definitely be welcome.

"Yeah, come along," she said, then she resumed her climb down the stairs. She waited for Remus at the bottom before making her way to the kitchen.

"Okay, here I come!" said Remus. He crawled through the trapdoor quickly and easily, forgetting that is was, much to the hilarity of his fellow marauders, referred to as his time of the month. It usually lasted from the week before to the week after the Moon. And, the closer he got to the Moon, the more like a rickety old man he was. His knees and hips creaked and he bit his lip, but otherwise there was nothing obvious. He landed as smoothly as possible on the ground floor and grinned at Wendy. "Here I am!"

Wendy raised an eyebrow and was about to ask him if he was all right when her father called again. She rolled her eyes, then made her way into the kitchen. Once there she saw her father holding a smallish record player. Ooo, I didn't know they had little ones, she thought, momentarily distracted from her terror. Remus, you lucky duck! She smiled at her father, taking the record player from him. "How much do I owe you?" she asked. Her father shook his head.

"Not a dime. Make it a gift from me, too."

"You might not be saying that for long!" Finn called from his room. Wendy cringed slightly. Then she turned to Remus, who had conveniently just entered a little bit behind for reasons unknown. She smiled radiantly at him, holding out the record player.

"Happy Christmas, Remus! I hope it works!"

Were he ten years younger, Remus probably would have either a) wet himself, or b) started crying. Either way, his eyes were itching and burning most mysteriously, and he had to blink many many times, as Wendy placed the record player in his violently shaking hands.

"Wendy, y-you...y-you r-really shouldn't've..." he trailed off hoarsely. He honestly didn't know what to do with himself; he was too happy. It was like a happiness overdose. He hadn't been this happy in many, many Christmases, and that wasn't even counting all the kisses.

He finally tore his aching eyes away from the little record player and stared up at Wendy with which could only be described as bug-eyes.

I love you Wendy Rivers.

Wendy grinned - full-throttle, top-notch Wendy-grin. "Well, I did, so get over it!" she joked. "You wanna go upstairs and pick a record?"

"Not so fast!" cried Finn's voice, and suddenly he, too, was in the kitchen. "There are some urgent matters that need discussing. Urgent matters involving Wendy and Remus and Wendy's room!"

Wendy rolled her eyes, knowing that if she pretended she knew that Finn was lying, her father would believe that Finn was lying. "Oh, Finn, do grow up," she said, waving him off.

"But - ! But - ! Dad, they were - !"

"Finn, I really don't want to hear it right now," his father sighed tiredly.

"But they were kiss - !"

"I said I didn't want to hear it!" Moping, Finn made his way back toward his room. Wendy grinned after him.

"Don't look so smug," Finn said, glaring. "He'll find out eventually."

"Yeah, when there's actually something for him to find out," Wendy said, sneering. Finn glumly disappeared back into his bedroom, and Wendy grabbed Remus's arm. "C'mon, then - let's put a record on her, see if she works!" With that it was back up to the trapdoor.

Remus was still trying very hard not to hyperventilate with shock as he trailed after Wendy weakly. She'd...gotten him...a record player... It was impossible, improbable, inconcievable. He handed the record player up to Wendy so he wouldn't have to climb with one arm, and then hurriedly excused himself to the bathroom.

Instead of the bathroom, however, he ran up to the guest room, closed the door, leaned against it, sank to the floor, and dropped his face into his hands. Never, had he imagined that anyone would do something so...so nice...for him...a filthy, worthless, dirt-poor werewolf who couldn't even afford records. Now he was hyperventilating a little.

"God, Lupin, calm down!" he said firmly to himself, hitting himself in the head for good measure. "It's bad enough that you're on the verge of tears because of a stupid record player, but you weren't even this excited when she let. you. kiss. her!"
PostPosted: Tue Dec 30, 2008 10:52 pm

"See? SEE? I TOLD you!" came a way-too-loud Finn-whisper from outside the guest room door.

"That's great, Finn," came a lifeless, bored-sounding whisper wearing Sam's voice.

"I said they were up there kissing, but did the two big bad Aurors wanna listen to me? Noooo, they'd much rather believe that Wendy's a perfectly innocent little toddler and her guyfriend is going to become a priest!" Finn went on in a semi-hysterical, much-too-loud whisper.

"Finn."

"What?"

"Shut up."

Remus felt his eyes widen to the size of saucers, and leaped to his feet with the agility of someone the same age as him, but much healthier. He couldn't fight the tiny "Urgh!" that slipped out when his knee popped funnily, but otherwise managed to remain silent, cowering against the bed.

Well it's not like you can hide, he realized. They already heard you.

Slowly and carefully, he rose up to his feet and began to move towards the door. If he was about to die, he might as well not die a coward.

Cautious of any drawn wands, Remus slowly opened the door, and then quickly put his hands in the air like a convict and backed up slowly.

Sam smirked at the sight of Remus's surrender. "Leave, Finn," he said.

"What?! But I wanna - !"

"Go away, Finn."

"But I'm the one who caught - !"

"I'll give you to the count of five."

"Aw, c'mon, Sam, this isn't fair - !"

"One. Two. Five." Faster than the human eye could blink Sam's wand was out, and seconds later Finn was crumpled on the floor, dissolved in hopeless giggles.

"Aha! Ahahaha! Low - ha - blow, Sam! Hehehehehe!" Sam put his wand back in his pocket and turned back to Remus. "Hey, kiddo," he said casually.

"Contrary to what you might believe, I'm not gonna stand here and chew you out for forty minutes. You're a good kid, I can see that. Wendy's fifteen, which means you're probably older than her in years and younger than her in intellect. And I get that guys and girls of your age, y'know, kiss and date and whatnot. I've been there, and I've got no problems from that standpoint. But... I just gotta... Oh, how do I put this nicely..."

He pondered for a moment, shrugged, then said, "Well, here's the basic gist I'm trying to imply: You break her heart, I'll break your neck. Do we have an understanding?"

Contrary to popular belief, carpet really was fascinating.

Which was why Remus was so intently staring at it, absorbing every word, every syllable that fell from Sam's mouth.

So blunt. So strong. So healthy.

Why couldn't he be like that?

If he didn't care so much for gentle words and a kind voice, maybe people wouldn't like him so much. If he were stronger, he might be more intimidating, which would keep people away from him as well. That was what he wanted in the beginning. He hadn't wanted any friends or to kiss girls at all; he had just wanted to learn and go home and turn into a monster and maybe grow old and die. He didn't count on the hopes of a job, or a wife, or a family, because he knew that these things were all out of reach. He just wanted the knowledge worthy of a wizard, to make him feel more like a human boy, before his curse killed him, which very well could happen any given month at the rate he was going. He couldn't even go two weeks out of a month without feeling like s**t these days.

Last week, he had found a gray hair.

If he were healthy, he would be good enough for a girl like Wendy.

He sank onto the bed, suddenly feeling defeated, and still avoided Sam's eye.
"I understand."
