Lin tilted her head, she knew that sometimes parents kissed after having a little 'spat' like that. Her Mommy and Daddy did when they didn't think anyone was around. However she didn't understand this... keeping of manhood thing. The gears in her mind turned, and she came up with blanks.

She was sure it wasn't that hard... after all... man, obviously meant the whole male thing. Pen was male, he was a man, so that part made sense, but hood. There was parenthood, which was a life as a parent, and there was womanhood to become a woman as a life as a woman.

So manhood must mean life as a man, but then that didn't make any sense because how could you take away a person's manhood unless they were either no longer living or a man. She was pretty sure her friend wouldn't kill Pen, so it must have been the later.

"I don't get it," she murmured, "How can you make him stop being a man?"

"It's very simple," Lothiriel said coolly, turning back to face Lin. "You remove the part that makes a man a man. A knife, a quick cut, and done."

Genuine fear crossed Pen's face, and he took an uneasy step backwards. "You don't have to sound so nonchalant about it," he sweated. "That's just not fair."

"You're acting as if you have something to be worried about," Lothiriel commented, raising one eyebrow and looking back at him. "Keep your lips to yourself and you'll be fine."

"Listen to her, Pen, listen to her!" both boys encouraged the elf, their voices raised in unison.

"You'd be a fool not to," Ahren added in his deep voice.

"You're an idiot for even trying!" Adanedhel added, sounding somewhat desperate. "Don't try to kiss her, don't even pretend to!"

"You've got to keep your dignity," Ahren nodded.

"Oh....." Lin murmured.

She supposed that would make sense.... after all parents did need children to be parents.

"Okay, now I get it."

Though it then begged the question, what part of a man made a person a man? It had to be something other than what she could see... otherwise it wouldn't be easy or quick.

Maybe Miyu knew....

Lothiriel nodded. "Good. Now. Can you tell us how far it is to the ranch? And which direction? We were hoping to get there by dinner time."

Pen shook his head behind Lothiriel and mouthed to the children, If we don't make it I win the bet. Then he grinned and gave them the thumbs up as if asking for their help.

The boys however weren't about to risk getting on Lothiriel's bad side.

"This way," Ahren pointed. "You can be there in less than an hour, in plenty of time for dinner." He looked down at the fish that were now in Adanedhel's hands. "Actually, Mother wanted these fish by then ... if you'd like I can take you there right now."

Adan grinned. "And I can come with!" he said enthusiastically. "We can surprise everyone together!"

Lin looked at Pen and then at Lothiriel, she didn't know what to make of Pen. He was... weird.

That was it, he was weird.

So if there was an unspoken rule about not talking about what people mouth behind teh back, she didn't follow it.

"What sort of bet did you two make?"

Lothiriel folded her arms across her chest once more and looked at Pen again, her expression one of incredulity. "You are such a cheater!" she exclaimed. "How can you stand yourself? Honestly!"

Pen shuffled his feet in the dirt at the river's side. "Well, you didn't specify ..."

She laughed and shook her head, then turned back to Lin. "If we get there before dinner, he cooks for a month after we start traveling again. If not, I do."

"And she's a better cook!" Pen added desperately.

"Don't you like to cook?" Lin asked Pen curiously, "Your cooking can't be that bad otherwise Lothiriel wouldn't let you cook at all."

After all if someone was a bad enough cook then that person would not be allowed to cook.

"Oh, I'm a fine cook," Pen assured Lin hastily, "it's just that food always tastes better from someone else's hands."

"By which he means that he prefers someone else do the work," Lothirel clarified. "I wouldn't hand feed him unless I had to. He's just lazy, that's all."

"I am not!" Pen retorted indgnantly. "It's just such a waste to dirty these hands with such menial chores ..." And he looked down at his hands in mock dismay.

"Narcissist," Lothiril sighed, though she was used to his acts by now.

Lin looked at his hands and looked at him and then back at his hands. She hurried forward a bit and took one of his hands studying it, looking at his palm and then the back of his hand, and then his palm again.

"But your hands are already dirty from travelling, what's the difference?"

Lothiriel burst into laughter and scooped Lin up, swinging her around in a hug.

"That's the most brilliant comment ever!" she laughed. "Ach, years of traveling with him and I've never said the same!"

Pen wasn't quite so amused. "Now how am I supposed to get out of it?" he muttered, shoving his hands (which were indeed quite dirty) into his pockets.

"You can't," Ahren replied shortly. "We're going to the ranch. Come on."

He beckoned for Adan and Lin to follow and set off into the woods, in the direction of his home.

"Let's go," Adan muttered, following after the other boy quickly.

Lin didn't think it was brilliant at all, it was a question, but that was okay. She liked the hug, she giggled at Lothiriel as she took the woman's hand and followed after Ahren.

"You're very silly," she told Pen.

"Thank you," Pen grinned back at Lin.

Lothiriel rolled her eyes and glanced down a Lin.

He takes pride in his silliness, she informed the girl, speaking to her with her mind. He doesn't look or act it, but he's older than my father.
