Eulalia Danae ArynChris Cookie reached out a hand to ruffle the girl's hair, smiling with her eyes if not the rest of her withered face. "Well, good," she said briskly, "because the crew ate all the chocolate before we got raided, and someone lifted my cinnamon sugar. Come on back and I'll show you how to make them." she added telepathically.
"AND IF YOU EXPECT SWEETNESS OUT OF AN OLD SOUR-PUSS, JACK, YOU'LL ALWAYS BE DISAPPOINTED! Get in here, Forde." Haldis sent back to Cookie. But she followed after the woman anyway. Cookie took the girl's hand for a moment. <*sigh* You can't stay away forever. Eventually, you'll have nowhere to go and no random strangers to protect you, and they will come for you. At some point, you're going to have to face them.> She picked the girl up easily and set her on a countertop where she could see all the cooking.
"Child, all it took was an hour or two of watching you and my mind wandering while I tried to sleep that night. Now, I've been around the block enough to maybe be putting the pieces together faster than some, but eventually someone's going to start thinking about the little girl all alone on the Gilgamesh... You think they aren't bored over there, those killers and theives?" She jerked her head towards the door. "One of them will idly mention a certain bounty for a little white-haired girl, too stupid to see the prize until after the words are out of his mouth. If you don't keep a lower profile, you're going to get hog-tied, molested, and stolen right out of this place as soon as those cards are found."
She spoke low enough so no one--like Jack Darlow the murderous bartender--could hear, but Forde would catch some of it once he was inside.

Forde looked between the bartender and Cookie, and shook his head as he went into the kitchen. "So you have no chocolate chips? Well there goes my plan." He walked over to the counter and picked up a spatula and laughed. "Why this is the craziest knife I've ever seen!" He exclaimed, set it back down, and then added "Joking of course."

Cookie gave him her usual sour look. "You better. The last 'cook' who couldn't tell that spatula from a knife tried to use it against a con and got a fork in the eye for his trouble. Can you actually cook, or was that a ploy?"

Forde smiled at the thought of someone taking a fork to the eye and nodded. "Of course it was a ploy. Do you honestly believe that there are people out there who know how to cook?" Forde took his jacket off, and placed it on the counter in the corner, and then put an apron on. "Hungry? I feel like making something exotic. How's Mandarin Chicken sound? Mom used to make it at home all the time, said it was a recipe that was used YEARS ago."

Haldis chuckled, and then began to laugh, a white light glowing in her blue eyes. "Clever clever, Cookie" The little girl tone to her voice had dropped a few levels.
She smiled her five year old smile, pretending she had said nothing unusual. She looked at Forde, "mandarin chicken sounds good, but only with rice."

Cookie's eyes crinkled. "I'm aware of that. Was never one for Chinese food, though. You sure you want to make it with Jack out there?" She jerked her head towards the door again. "They say he blamed murder on bad Chinese food, and he gets a bit of whatever we make in here."

Forde laughed and nodded. "Oh so you two know what it is? Must be from Earth then." He rolled his eyes for a moment. "Never was one for that planet." He looked around the kitchen and crinkled his brow a little. "Now...where is everything here?"

But I was stuck there for too long, got so boring."

"I spent some time there, but I travel a lot. There's Chinese food all over the galaxy, if you know where to look. Assorted pubs, the Argonsi Empire... Ypslon's Outpost is famous for it, if you chat with the Seventh Line frieghters. Why, where are you from?" She started opening cabinets and drawers, pulling out certain useful or unusual tools of hers--all the rest had been thrown out with the idiot cook--and mimed death while pointing to one she didn't open.

"Earth hasn't been interesting since before the Mimic Wars, I swear, and even then I'm sure it would have gotten boring after a while. What is with that planet?"

Haldis smiled, a smile that was full of amusement. "You know the murderer." She said it aloud in a singsong voice, almost like a children's rhyme. She followed it with a laugh. She grabbed her stomache and literaly rolled, as if it was the funniest joke she had heard in a long long time. She didn't particularly care how lost Forde was at this point.

Cookie caught the girl as she rolled right off the counter and set her in a corner. Sourly, she said, "No, I don't know her, but if you live long enough you tend to hear a lot about unusual people. I monitor the bar and rec, and I've picked up a lot in the past few weeks about that particular convict, alright? I also know that there are several people she could use to get herself out of that if she plays her cards right, and that so far she has been.
"But for all I know she wears that thing because she's short on clothes, so how about you stop laughing your breath away? We have cookies to make! And the chicken, of course."

Haldis sobered immediatley. "Yes'm." She brushed her white dress back into place and kicked her legs back and forth while she sat on the counter. She looked at Cookie curiously. "How long is long enough?" She tilted her head, the white glow of her eyes shining slightly. "What all do you know? And maybe, is there something you'd like to know?"

Cookie started pulling out cookie ingredients, figuring that she would start the cookies while Forde worked on his chicken. "Long enough is long enough," she told the girl wearily. "Don't ask me if it's worth it. As for Lia, well... I know her full name, I think, although it's still possible she's someone else entirely from who I think. With that one around, though, I can't imagine she'd be anyone else. Stories about her have been going around since I was young..." <...as young as I still look, under all this. You know what I mean.>
She chuckled suddenly, half a cackle. "You know what? I don't think there's a thing in the world I really want to know. I'll keep living, and I'll find my answers that way or decide to change the questions, just as I always have. Maybe just to know what year it is, since I've lost track." Cookie shrugged. She had questions and desires, yes, but she was wise enough to know that asking the girl for them was wrong.
