Hey another question. This coming up school year it will be required for us to play either a solo or an ensemble piece at District 17 Solo & Ensemble. Does anyone know of any good solo pieces for clarinet preferablly a Grade 5?

I did his clarinet quintet Allegro Con Variazoni last year and it's a grade 4, thereabouts...

Has anyone here played a piece of music called American Elegy by Frank Ticelli (I think is how it spelled) I have played all three parts for clarinet in my band in my sophmore year. I lovedit so much and you should recommend it to your band directors for concert seasons. Its a grade 4. But its amazing. You just need a good brass section and a great Trumpet player but it is definatley worth the practice to play it. It was made in honor of the Columbine HighSchool tragedy.

I'm my high school's section leader for Clarinets... Also was the youngest to sit first chair in our band. And Section Leader Head for marching season. Two other people help out with sectionals consdiering we have about 20 clarinets. I was second Chair in district honors band and just returned from sitting first chair in Blue Lake's International Northern Winds. I love my Selmer Omega Clarinet and take very good care of it. Although when my music house fixed it... they didn't seal a pad right and it had to be fixed while I was in Europe. My school's marching band sucks... but it has it's perks! If you take two years of Marching band then you don't have to take any PE classes.

My band played it a few years ago. It's really quite beautiful. This year my band's playing the Overture to Candide, a commissioned piece for our band, an Eric Whitacre composition, and this really fantastic arrangement of some of Aaron Copland's works. Basically, we're going to have an awesome year. : D

Blue_eyed_rican-
there is a fourth octave, but honestly? Its not really used, don't sweat over it, just get up to G in the third octave in you're fine :]. Composers find the fourth octave irritable...I'm sure the orch would keel us...probably the only time I've heard it use in a piece would be some contemporary piece or Copland's clarinet concerto, which is just up to the HIGHHHHHHHHHH B. Thats it though.
Ooh I've heard of it, I've played thousands of works by ticheli, mainly because my bd is really good friends with him smile . The year before I came to middle school when our wind ens went to carnegie for the second time, ticheli conducted them. He also conducted our all state symphonic band [I wasn't in it because my CD got messed up -_-] and had dinner with my bd...and my bd told him about my interpretation of sanctuary....i love frank ticheli though. I really wanna play american elegy, it is a beautiful piece smile / [sorry, its the blueberry white iced tea and blue berry muffin from starbucks kicking in]
nevira, I agree with you totally on mozart, biggrin mozart is the reason I got into all southern orch x3 Oh my mozart, that crazy prodigy smile . You can only go wrong with mozart if you ruin it =P. I'd suggest the adagio movement, its lovely <3 ^_^!
right now I'm working on the lovely poulenc for all state high school, my first time auditioning, being a freshie and all =P. I LOVE the piece, even though its impossible, its soo fun to learn. Right now I have the tempo up to 76 on the first two lines, i'd get it up to 85 but i didn't have enough time -_-;.
oh MY MOZART1 Nevira1 I got 56 reeds biggrin lovely, the response is beautifulll, so smooth, its so easy to get from register to register, and my dynamic range is more controllable :].
I need help drastically, my BD won't let me try out for HS all southern. only MS all southern [freshies could try out], my teacher was just..neutral, I guess he didn't wqant me to stress over it...with the all state audition coming. But I origianlly wanted to try out for all southern hs, plus my friend from all state and another form all southern is trying out too! Its a choice between being the top chair in the ms orchestra--basically being great but not taking ze risk, or being in a cruddy or not even a chair in hs all southern, taking the risk to be great...
what happened to my bd's wish of all 50 of us from all southern getting in WITH the hs people! argh!
so iono what to do
I must sleep, stupid sugar for kicking in DX...hence the long post and underlines and stuff
