Toby sat down on the bed to pull on his socks. "I'll meet you there."
Dari was already up, predictably. The day-of had been less terrible than the days preceding last year. Hopefully it would be this time too. He smiled and waved to Maia, and then Toby jogged down the stairs looking rather peppy. Good. That was a good sign.

"We're making pancakes," Maia cheerfully informed Dari. She got the blueberries out of the fridge and started looking for other ingredients they needed for pancakes. She waited for Toby after pulling out the flour. "Ready?" she asked.

"Are you?" Toby grimaced slightly and twisted, cracking his back. Much better. Then he was retrieving the butter, the milk, the measuring cups and spoons. "Do you have it memorized yet?" An unlikely proposition. He was teasing again.

"Ready!" was Maia's immediate response. She beamed at him, and paused, surprised by his question. Hn. No, she didn't have how to make pancakes memorized. "I need more practice," she said. "I've got the kitchen memorized, though!"

"Oh, good. The pop quiz is on Tuesday when I compulsively reorganize." The kitchen had been the same for years. Toby could probably cook blindfolded from beginning to end. He began mixing the batter and Dari wandered to the kitchen.
"How are you feeling today?"
Toby let out a great rush of air and smiled. "Okay." He turned to Dari. "We're alright."

"I'll pass with flying colors," Maia assured him with a smile. "I might even help, if you need." She looked up as Dari wandered in. "Want to help us? When Toby's done mixing, we have to be careful to flip them just right, or they flop over." She spoke from experience.
And Toby was feeling alright, too! Good! She'd been concerned when he'd declined her offer to go out today.

"My structure is not meant for heavy things at the end of long, thin things," Dari said. Maybe if he developed some more finger bones, but that'd take hours. Instead he leaned in the doorway to stay out of the way but not completely isolate himself.
"C'mere, Maia. Learn. Folding." He added the blueberries and began to fold them in. "Stir too hard and they explode all over the place. You need to do this with meringues and things too. Creams. Anything airy and anything fragile. Or both."
Dari smiled. He really did seem okay. He was over the hump.

Maia went to Toby's side. Exploding blueberries? That sounded almost intriguing, but definitely bad for pancakes. ...She still wanted to see it. "Did you know peeps go crazy in the microwave? I saw it in a video on youtube. We could explode those when they come out again. I looked in the store."

Toby grinned and chuckled, flicking some water on the griddle to test the heat. Not quite ready yet.
"They do. You can give them toothpicks. Any marshmallow will do it, though." He looked to Dari. "I don't suppose we have any left."
"...no."
"Mm, I didn't think so." Another smile and a shake of the head. "We'll do it next time. I was 13 when Peeps came out. Prime time for microwave shenanigans, but unfortunately those didn't come for another ten years or so."

"Let's explode marshmallows," Maia said. "The ones we don't use, Dari can have." He'd eaten an entire bag, almost; he really did seem to like them. "You're older than microwaves?" she asked, in disbelief.
"My father was afraid of them," she confided. "But we had one. It's ancient now."

Toby laughed and nodded. Yes, he was older than microwaves.
"Ours is pretty old too. I don't use it a lot." He looked back at the machine and shrugged. He flicked more water on the griddle. It spat and balled up and danced and disappeared. Perfect.
"You wanna do the first one, Dari?"
"Sure."
Dari came in and took the ladle offered and poured a helping onto the griddle. He seemed quietly pleased.

"I don't know how they work," and she wasn't particularly interested, except for the fact that they could explode marshmallows in them. She wondered what other things might explode, if put into a microwave. Maybe a potato? A strawberry?
Dari seemed quite happy to be included on making breakfast, she'd have to remember to invite him more often.

"I could teach you about it some day, if you're interested," Dari offered. He offered the ladle back to Toby, apparently done with his contributions on this particular morning.
"Maia?" Toby asked, offering it to her.

"Okay," she was always eager to learn, and Dari made things fun. Even random trivia. "When we explode marshmallows, you can give me a crash course in microwaves."
Maia took the ladle, pouring mix onto the griddle. She liked watching it bubble, when they were almost ready to flip.

Toby handed off the ladle. "The waves are a certain wavelength and they go in and they go GUHHHH and then they go out and particles moving fast makes things hot and there you go."
Dari laughed. "Well. Yes."
Toby just waited for the pancakes to cook and flipped them over.
"Ah, two perfect specimens. If pancakes are meant to have tails." He nudged a protuberance on Dari's pancake.
"Are you biased against tailed peoples?"
"It's a pancake, not a person!"
