Blood seems to be the obvious reagent based off that clue.
And kitties. Right.
Two possibilities as to why they would react in such a fashion:
Strangers
Supernatural
Usually, though, they probably won't react to a stranger that way unless they were quite unusual.

Hmm, sound reasoning at least for this murder. There is still the matter of the death involving burn marks and the power fluctuations. Don't you think that electric shock is the cause of death there?
How can we tie all these murders together when they are all so different from each other?
Edit: Logically, I'd assume it was the strangers theory since supernatural deaths are hardly common place around here. Perhaps a static discharge in the air even caused them to feel uncomfortable.

I was actually thinking back to the theory of a non-human being the murderer, but I'm still skeptical or anything supernatural.
The different methods are to throw us off, clearly.
