The Ghost of Xmas Awesome

"Well, just keep on your toes, kid. Just remember, never trust a ninja."

"Does that include present company?" Byakuran inquired with a slight trace of humor in his voice. For what it was worth, when he wasn't getting on his case for not reporting in, Byakuran actually like Takahashi. Sure he was a slimy, lying, scoundrel who had probably done everything from rob blind men to extort old ladies, but when you got in his good graces he was fair enough by you. And, for better or worse, keeping track of the kid for the years since he'd been hired by the Otobe to take his place in their network, Byakuran had landed in said good graces. Even if the kid WAS an odd duck, there was something endearing about his almost absent minded disregard for morality. The kid was just as likely to stare off into space debating over why clouds were white, then the very next moment be ruthlessly carrying out his orders to the letter all in the name of his exalted clan, or the Village of the mist itself, and there was something to admire about that....

The man merely laughed "Ya damn right it does. Don't even pretend that if the good ol' council of Kiri handed down my kill order you'd even bat an eye carrying it through."

Byakuran smiled a rather care free smile, "Now that's just not true, Onmitsu-chan," following his rather odd habit of addressing most everyone outside serious situations like they were a little kid. "You'd at least get a ten to eleven seconds hesitation."

The "tea shop owner" laughed BECAUSE he knew the kid was serious.

Takahashi wasn't sure what that thing to be admired was, but it was there.

Byakuran swept through the next wave of leaves, his attention to the conversation itself only mildly invested, as evidenced by the rather laze fair expression on his face. But Takahashi knew better then to actually expect some sort of emotional investment from the boy, one may as well have tried to get gold from a water spout, the two just didn't go hand in hand. Byakuran's rather flighty nature extended to anything that other people took to be serious business, and he viewed his missions, assignments, as well as the taking of others lives, more akin to what other people considered to be tedious errands unless something about the task personally intrigued him.

This wasn't necessarily hard to do, Takahashi had learned over the years, as quite a bit of things drew the young ninja's interest, it was merely a matter of handling it the right way.

"So this training of yours, kid, how's it going anyway?" he reached round and withdrew a long stem pipe from the pack behind him, still sitting down as he rustled about his pocket for some his tabaco pouch.

"Well enough," Byakuran said absently. "I'm currently merely training the essentials... I suppose if you're looking for something tangible, I can walk on walls now."

"Oh yeah? No kiddin." the portly man said as he lit he pipe, a small trail of smoke leaving the end as he took a long pull. After but a moment he exhaled, sending out a brief cloud before leveling his gaze back to the boy, who currently sweeping his way untouched through the falling leaves. "Heh, always said you had talent, kid...though I guess considering your roots I'm obligated to say that eh?" he let out a slight chuckle.

"It would probably be the the prudent thing, yes." he sprouted a small smile once more at the comment, bending himself about the last leaf as he turned to raise a brow at Takahashi. After all, the clan wouldn't take kindly to someone working for them suggesting that someone in the clan DIDN'T have talent. They didn't take things like that well and would most likely consider it "Insolence", and since they'd never really picked up the practice of "firing" people in the traditional sense, the best you could hope for was an assassin with a sense of fair play, in response.

Even Takahashi took notice as, slapping two tree's at once, Byakuran proceeded to enter a rather impressive series of acrobatics, sliding to the side, whipping about, and dashing about the storm of falling leaves without so much as brushing a single one of the oncoming host. It seemed that it all happened in slow motion, the twisting movements and sudden turns possessed of skillful conduction that left his spectator impressed, needless to say. As Byakuran grew still once again, the last of the leaves having fallen, the man began to clap in amusement. "Heh, heh, well kid, that was pretty good. I guess you have been working on your training, at that." he took another long pull from his pipe, letting out the plume of smoke as he spoke. "That reminds me, those scrolls you ordered came in. You want to come pick them up?"

Scrolls he ordered? Ah. Byakuran took only a moment to get his meaning. Yes, of course. The Clan Jutsu. Now that he was officially an initiate, he was allowed access to the Clan's more rudimentary techniques. "Yes...thank you. I'll be by to pick those up later."

Takahashi gave a casual nod, as though their exchange meant nothing more then what was being said, his brow raising slightly. "Oh, that's right, I forgot. I was supposed to tell you from my wife that she had a little errand for you to run for us."

"An errand?" Byakuran inquired as he avoided the next bout of leaves.

When he'd earlier noted that Takashi's reputation was spotless, he'd not really been entirely honest. It was free of any smudges where it counted, of course. No one would suspect the man of being an intelligence hub, but he was a man of the finer things in life, and he had a little side business working while he was here in Kiri. It wasn't anything too extravagant, just a small gambling parlor, but it brought in a little extra revenue, and even some of the ninja that should have been watching him more closely were regular customers. It actually, according to him, helped their cover. Show them a little corruption, and they won't suspect the worst. Being "Perfect" was sometimes the most suspicious thing of all, not to mention exhausting.

An errand translated into a personal favor...or rather, an off the record job. Takahashi would of course pay him for such things, he understood well how the world worked. And it might, depending on the task, even give him an opportunity to test his skills...everybody won.

"Oh?" Byakuran gave a slightly incredulous smile as he caught a small folder which was thrown his way, slowing his dodging as he opened the folder, glancing down at the details held within. "Hn...my, what a long shopping list." Byakuran wore his more subdued smile, eyebrows raised.

"Well, what can I say?" the man admitted with a smokey grin, pipe stem resting between his teeth. "When you run a small business like mine you tend to run up a bill. Think you could be a good kid and swing by the store for us?"

The "shopping list" included details about a rival gambling operation that seemed to have taken up residence in the district near Takahasi's own, and that meant less business. Apparently the request was to "cut their profits indefinitely" but that was clear enough by itself. He wanted their operation dealt with permanently...and that meant killing the key partners involved. Byakuran gave a musing " Hmmm....well, I intend to continue my training for some time...but perhaps later tonight when I'm finished."

Takahashi smirked through the smoke from his pipe. "That's fine, some of the items on the list are probably better off gotten late anyway, eh?" he chuckled. Translation, the main partners of the betting Parlor would most likely not show up on site until later in the evening when things started kicking up. Yes, Byakuran supposed that would make sense. Kicking the tree again and reading the folder as he did so, the dark haired boy evaded the shower of greenery with twists and agile turns even as he continued to peruse the details of the "errand".

It seemed like a fairly simple job, all things considered. He supposed he could pull it off while he was just waiting around for his Genin team assignment. No harm done. "Very well." Byakuran shut the folder, content with his dexterity training for the moment as the clearing fell still.

"Hey, hey," Takahashi said with a jovial cheer "that's mighty sweet of ya Byaku-kun." he russled in his pack for something. "Truth be told, I actually brought one of those scrolls I was talking about with me... think of it as a present to show just how much I appreciate this." he tossed the kid, the rather well kept scroll, the sigil of the Otobe Clan emblazoned upon it. "By the way, be sure to put that somewhere safe when you're done huh? Wouldn't want to lose it."

Don't let anyone see it, and burn it when you're done. Yes, Byakuran wasn't foolish enough to keep anything that tied him directly to the clan. Even if they suspected, he couldn't give them anything solid. Using his Kekke genkai was expected, so using the jutsu would only confirm that he was, in fact, an Otobe...being found with his clan's seal, however, would suggest that he was actually still in contact with the REST of the Otobe...two entirely different matters.

"Of course, thank you.

Byakuran turned slightly as he slipped the folder into his own pack, before turning his focus to the scroll in his other hand.breaking the seal, he was pleased at least that it required a discharge of sound waves, causing the seal itself to burst into flames without taking the scroll with it. No doubt had anyone besides an Otobe attempted to open it, the seal would have merely incinerated itself AND the scroll...

He unfurled the clearly freshly printed parchment. The scroll had clearly been made specifically for his own benefit, designed to be disposed of as soon as it was learned. His eyes scanned the various writings and scribblings, his expression staying a rather harmless smile. Interesting... he might just be able to do this. He didn't yet have the chakra reserves to use the technique in battle, or to it's fullest extent...but learning the principle itself was well within his grasp. Yes... he suspected that he could do this... given a bit more training.

He nodded to himself, before the slipping the scroll away as well. "Very well." he turned away from Takahashi and closed his eyes, apparently dismissing him, though not as such asking him to leave. Byakuran's chakra began to course through his second self, his sensory system now vibrated waves of sound into his his own body. To the exterior eye it seemed as though the boy's entire form had begun to tremble...though not in a natural way. He was shaking in a uniform manner, the sound waves now battering into his muscles as he maintained a steady expression.

This, he supposed, was a long time coming. Even if he didn't possess the normal physique of someone strong and enduring, he didn't need to be. He didn't need to be to be so long as he had chakra. Particularly with the Otobe's abilities passed down to him in his blood. He may not have bought into the ideal that Otobe were superior in every way, and he certainly didn't know what to think concerning their relationship with the heavens, but he did now that by reinforcing his body repeated with the intense vibrations of his ability, he'd be able to strengthen his muscles even if they refused to bulk up, even if it seemed that he was still just a weak little teenager trying in vain...

He would become strong to endure learning his clan's techniques...and even more so he would become strong enough to become a true Shinobi... it was inevitiable.

"Heh, kid, you really are something, how long exactly are you going to train not stop eh? You're not a machine ya know." Takahashi merely laughed to himself as he shook his head. The kid was something of an amusement to he and his partner... rather, he and his "wife". They'd been in charge of keeping an eye on the kid ever since he was first "found" by Kiri. Having gotten his second self under control at an early age he'd been a prime candidate to be sent off to infiltrate the ranks of one of the villages, or at least that had been the idea.

The Minute Takahashi had met the kid those years back however, he could have told them how very NOT made for the position this kid was. Not even taking into account his complete lack of interest in listening to other people unless he was either coerced, bribed, or feeling particularly generous that day, getting him to cooperate at first had been like trying to milk a male cow. It just didn't pan out.

But the kid had grown on them eventually. You just needed to know how his mind worked. For example telling him to do something was a very good way to make sure it only had a fifty percent chance of getting done, depending on whether or not something caught his interest, while as asking it of him was far more likely to work, so long as you asked the right way. The best way of course, to get the kid to do anything, was to intrigue his curiosity, and that was actually not as hard as most. Normally it just involved asking a question to no one in particular. That would usually get him thinking, and therefore wanting to know the answer himself. It was finding the right question that pertained to the task you wanted done that was the real trick.

Now that wasn't to say the kid didn't have personal motivation. The very first time the kid had helped them out purely out of his own whimsy the pair of contacts had been nearly floored. They didn't think that he even had the emotional awareness to do something like that... but apparently, and this was only the beginning of that realization, there was more to the kid then what you could get from first impressions... in fact even second or third. He seemed, as much as either of the pair could tell, to like them, at least as much as he showed favor to people in general, and as such would occasionally grant them a boon, not all that different from the mentality of his god complex obsessed clan, but he was far more pleasant about it.

Truth be told, it as a little surprising that Byakuran was an Otobe with the way he acted, but when Takahashi thought about it, it wasn't that much of a stretch.

The boy had spent his childhood as an otobe, and that meant all that that implied. Byakuran's early years of life had been a hell of out of control senses, his mind even from a young age the victim of his own perceptions. The smallest sounds sending you into spasms, the slightest scents overpowering. It was like being under the Sensory Overload genjutsu every minute of every hour of every day since birth, until such time as you finally managed to get it under control and build up a proper tolerance... a proper way for your mind and nervous system to handle and interpret all that powerful information being conducted through it. Most Otobe, when this process was finished, were a mental wreck fresh for the forming, a ball of clay easily shaped into whatever the Otobe clan wished of them.

The programs that Byakuran had been sent through had not been the lightest of them either, his rather unique personality had not gone over well upon his emergence from his second self's chaotic lack of control. He'd asked questions, too many questions. He'd wanted to know, more than the Otobe could answer. That, along with his rather early ascension into sanity, had been the clan's excuse to ship him off somewhere, counting on his loyalty at least, and getting him out of their hair. He was arranged to be found by Kiri, a group of civilians slaughtered to serve as his potential family while he himself was taken in, an apparent orphan of circumstance. It hadn't been a bad plan, really. It had gotten the boy where they wanted him, after all, and they had kept Takahashi and his partner close by to keep watch over him...

But it didn't take into account that sending the most inquisitive free minded Otobe away from all the propaganda and traditions of the clan was probably not such a hot idea.

Byakuran's abilities were another thing that slightly were a poor sign. The boy seemed well and determined to follow in the footsteps of his out of his mind bio-weapon of a brother in being a en elite, and was finally looking rather serious about making that happen. Whatever the kid was doing with all that vibrating, he was willing to bet that was using that freaky second sensory and chakra system that the Otobe lugged around... and speaking as one who had seen the kids older brother in action... well, Takahashi knew just how horrific it could been when set loose. He wasn't even sure if the word killing machine was enough to encompass the psychotic knight of Forte known as Senkyoku Otobe...

The boy's old Brother had been something of an unfortunate genius as well, though with none of Byakuran's...personality issues. The boy's mental state was a shamble and all the more ready to be molded into loyalty for the clan.
