Yes I know what pinning does.
Although those tests in my opinion are hard to fail.

yeah, he's pretty much correct on this one. most armies have extremly hight leadership so pinning is almost useless, for example:

Tyranids- syapse so they're fearless

Guardsmen- lowest is 7 but they get officers to buff it up easily

space marines-lowest is 8 but any vet sarge or captain buffs it up. (not to mention the "they shall know no fear rule")

necrons- all Ld 10

eldar- you can't hope to shoot at anything cause it's too damn fast.

witch hunters- don't get me started...

orks- they get a mob check so they almost never fail.

chaos marines- same as Space marines

so pinning really has no purpose.

It serves it purpose. If pinning was so easy to achieve, how many people woul d RUSH to use it? I mean think about it. It is nigh unreal to take battle hardened fighters or warriors and say they can be pinned by some floating drones... though it is possible, you just have to imagine the circumstances beyond the roll of the die. Pinning is still useful, and even if not in your eyes, it is an effect, it does not take away from the fact that the gun has power and the unit is still useful via tactic or scenario.

I love using sniper squads to force dual-morale checks; 25% from shooting AND a pinning check; works better than you think.

Anyways, from all the models I got last week, I pieced together a 6-8 gun drone squad for my use if I wanted to. Thing is, they dont seem worth it: Their accuracy is s**t, they are weak (well, so are all tau), and their range is 18 so it seems you have to get into someones face before you can use them.
I dont see the purpose when they cost more than firewarriors and they are quite a bit worse.

Gun Drones aren't that great, but they do have better accuracy than a Fire Warrior. (55% compared to 50%) What Drones are best for is filling up holes in your list for cheap, and providing extra models quick. What's nice is if you're trying to make a list and don't have quite enough models to fill up everything, then Drone Squads become useful. However, once you've got a fully fleshed out army, Drones fall by the wayside until you play Kill Team or a mission with Sentries. (And, as mentioned, for distracting berzerkers and the like)

well u can deep strike gun drones behind enemy tanks and hit the rear armor and if i rember right they dont give the opponet victory points (if your using it) when they do kill them.

I really dont think gun drones can do s**t against vehicle armor.

Rear armour is thinner and Tau weapons sport Str. 5 as a standard. Most rear armour is 10 or 11, so there is always a slim chance in hell that it can happen. If a squadron of eight drones fires at the rear end of a Leman Russ (AV 10), then there's a good chance some will either glance or dare I say, one penetrate.

Oh, im still fuzzy on how vehicle rules work, I thought the armor piercing value had something to do with it.

Drones do give VP's if bought in a squad. What you're thinking of are vehicle Drones. In any case, Deep Striking is iffy at best, especially Deep Striking behind a tank which has it's back up near a board edge. You're only going to hit 1/3 of the time, and if you're dropping into a ~6" corridor, then there's a good chance you're falling off the board and wasting 72-96 points.

The only AP values that matter against vehicles are AP- and AP1. AP- means that the weapon can only glance, AP1 means shots which equal the armor value penetrate instead of glance. All other AP values mean jack squat against targets with an Armor Value.

Depends on your point of view. If you qualify heavy tanks by the number of guns they carry and a front armor of 14, then no. Tau tanks carry two guns most of the time, sometimes three, and the tank with the heaviest front armor only goes up to 13. If you mean comparitivly heavy, as to Eldar tanks, or heavy as in ability to withstand alot of punishment, then yes. Tau have the heaviest skimmer tank (not counting the Monolith because of it's lumbering speed), and between it's high armor and ability to re-roll immobilized results, it actually has a pretty good battlefield life. Not quite as charmed a life as a Monolith or pimped out Falcon, but still pretty good.

Tau tanks are Skimmers as well, and can never recieve a penetrating hit if they move at least 6" a turn in one direction.
