MiyokoxClarinetti Jennuh Guess I really need need NEED serious advice from my fellow clarinet players out there. I am currently at the end of Sophomore at my current Music Conservatory college in NYC and I'm planning on transferring up to SUNY Potsdam for the Crane School of Music but I am stumbling over audition pieces. I want to play either the Sonate by Saint Saens or Arabesques by Paul JeanJean. I'm not really sure which to pick. Which do you think I could pull together by October/November/December-ish (Audition dates not out yet). I have NO idea what Arabesques looks like because sheetmusicplus.com has no image of it and I've never heard. For those who have played either of the pieces above (Or both would be a plus), which did you find easier/harder? Which is more technically difficult but able to be put together faster? If anyone has played Arabesques, can you PLEASE scan or take a cellphone picture of at least a page or 2 for me? I really really can't find it online and I wanna see what it looks like before I order it. hmm, well can I see Sonate :0? And whats your reason for transferring anyways? mm whats the requirements for the audition? hmm my teacher has the vade mecum clarinet etude book by jean jean...l'll ask him for a copy, I need the etude book like mad! So I'll copy it once I get it... it might be in two weeks, if I ask him about it this week then he'll have to give it to me in two weeks, he's having an audition next week [mines is this week!] for the orchestra he's in--pacific symphony [he's not a permanent member] so he's canceling lessons that week. will that be okay? :0 I would say that of the two, the Sonate would be the best. The Arabesque is not as hard as the Sonate, and I think that it is not as fun either. I personally have played both, so if you're looking for something easy, go for Arabesque. If you're looking for something a little more challenging, go for the Sonate. Actually, if you only have to play one movement, the first movement of the Sonate is pretty simple. I personally like a lot of the Brahms and Wagner, but that might be a bit more difficult than you're willing to try out. Good luck!!!

So I didn't make section leader, but Lauren and Lizzie did, and they're a heckuva lot more patient than me (and less likely to have to be checked into an insane asylum) so that'll be good for the freshmen. Corey, Molly, and Cassia made drum major (yay for Corey and Molly! I don't know Cassia very well other than she's a flautist...)
But even though I didn't get an official leadership position, I'll be working to help make band an enjoyable experience for everyone. Maybe I'll take over Sarah's old spot as the clarinet who makes stuff like T-shirts and bandannas for the rest of the section.
Also, I'll be recruiting new minions and making them some of the best band members to carry on even after I graduate. And hopefully I won't want to strangle said minions before the end of the year like I wanted to this year.
Note to self: Never let low brass players become minions. Especially freshman low brass players. xp

Patience, Misa-Misa! 3nodding Evenutally it will break in. It helps if you stick it in a glass and soak it in water for an extended period of time if it's a brand-new one. And play it! If that doesn't work, it might be just a bad reed in general.
Is anyone going to the Clarinet Symposium at the University of Oklahoma this month? I might be helping out there.

Jennuh Any played the Mozart Clarinet Concerto K.622. Need tips for learning first movement. T__T HEYY! I was learning that movement last june...then my teacher got carried away with the second movement...which i'm like awesome at...for once LOL
mm well...how long have you been working on the first movement?
for now all I can say is listening to recordings of musicians is the best thing to do, not bad ones though...like sabine meyer or karl leister.
take your time learning it, starting phrases backwards helps smile
and REPETITIONS of hard passages in DIFFERENT rhythms helps the technique too
best of luck!

Jennuh Any played the Mozart Clarinet Concerto K.622. Need tips for learning first movement. T__T I've been playing that too! I actually just got it the other day. I just play it slow to get the fingerings and rhythm down, and then I slowly get faster and faster until it's at the right tempo. Also, it's easier to listen to the song while reading over the notes. That way you can remember the rhythm easier and the tempo. I just started a number 3 reed, so my goal is to fluently play that concerto with a #3 reed. w00t, good luck!

I'm finally having lessons again after a 2 month hiatus [due to my teacher's busy schedule with auditions and performances...] I'm excited, and scared...I'm not sure to ask him whether or not I can try out for a youth orchestra, I feel like I'll get laughed at...because I've been having doubts abou trying out now :[
but my mommy said I can go to the SUMMER MUSIC INSTITUTE TANGLEWOOD next year! I was supposed to go this year but I had no time with summer school
