Cassie didn't want to hurt Hartley's feelings he did save her life and all. Plus he seemed like a really cool guy.
"Look if it makes you feel any better if I didn't already have a boyfriend I would go out with you in a heartbeat. But I'm with Chris... I hope you understand."

Hartley paused for dramatic effect before taking Cassandra's hands.
"Of course I...I understand, Cassandra. And I would never stand in the way of another man-"
Unless he asked me...
"So I will make this easy on you. I saw that flash of jealousy in his...visor...And I will leave you alone so that he will never show that side to you again. It's just that..."
Hartley paused again, looking away into the distance.
"I didn't want to be alone today..."

Cassie looked at Hartley and felt bad. He did save her lfie after all plus he was really cute.
"Well I guess we can hang out for today.. at least until the debate."
Cassie smiles him and holds his hand.
"So what did you want to do?'

Hartley looks down at Cassie and takes her hand.
"Well, you see, today...my parents are coming to the campus. They paid for the gym as a way to...speed up...my entry into the school, and with it having vanished, as you can imagine, my dad is livid. Of course he'd come here about the gym. Not about anything I've done. I thought that maybe you could understand how hard it is to have a father that is..."
He paused dramatically again.
"...distant..."

It all spun out of a fight we had. She thought I did that mural. Anyway...then...something weird happened and I went into this drawing frenzy. I was always bad at it but all of sudden I was inspired. Then I think I passed out.

Hartley couldn't believe how well this worked on girls. He wondered if the angsty broody thing worked on guys, too. He cleared his throat.
"No, it's no good. You shouldn't be seen hanging out with me. You're running for Student Council President, and I'm...I'll just hurt your chances to win. Even with my friend James being the one running against you, I wouldn't want to do that to you. Cassie, I..."
He looked straight into her eyes.
"I would do anything for you."
He looked away again.
