"We could just go home and goof off too," Toby offered, "You really can't do Legos in the park. It'd be maddening. Besides, I want to get Dari his snack before it goes bad." Did rice cakes and fruit caviar go bad?

Was it possible to distract Toby at home? Maia hadn't considered that. She smiled nd nodded. "Lets go," she said. "You'll have to show me how these work, I've never built anything more complicated than a sandcastle before."

Toby nodded and smiled as they moved through the line and completed the transaction.
"Well they come with step-by-step instructions."
"Do you have our Rewards card?"
"No, thank you." Back to Maia. "As long as you can follow pictures you're fine." Back to the cashier as she handed him his bag. "Thanks! Have a good day!"
"You too!" Then off they went, presumably to go home and play Legos.

Maia grinned, shaking her head. "I've never been good at following directions," she said. "But I'll try." The selkie looked to Toby as they exited the store. "We should come here again," She said. "Let's bring Dari next time."

Toby laughed slightly.
"Sometimes Dari doesn't want to go out. The whole making-up process takes a long time. He could always take the projector, but not into the movie theater. He'd glow." He led Maia back to the car and they were off toward home.

"I meant the toy store," Maia assured him.
When they arrived back at the house, the selkie climbed out of the car and took their bags. "Come on, Toby! We have a pirate ship to build!"

"I know."
When they got to the house, Maia was too fast for him to grab the bags himself. He followed her in instead and called out to Dari as they entered.
"We're back!"
"Hello!" Dari's voice responded from the living room. There were dull whispers of some game playing. The clicking of the controller was louder than the volume. Toby always found that quite strange. "Pirate ship?" he asked then.
"Legos."
"Nice."
"Want to play?"
"Sure." A few soft beeps, some more clicks, a moment and Dari was putting away the controller when Maia and Toby entered the living room.

Maia hugged Dari once he had put the controller away. "Toby and I picked the pirate set. And we got these!" She held up her seals. "Toby helped me pick them. The movie was good!" And she was delighted that Dari wanted to play with them. She removed the box from the bag and offered it to Toby.

Toby tore the box open. There were three bags inside, two with larger pieces and one with small pieces, and a large pamphlet for building all of the parts. Toby took off his shoes and sat down on the rug, pouring the two big bags out in to separate piles.
"Join me, friends," Toby said, gesturing widely with his arms, and then in perfect English, "There be ships to be raided."

Maia sat next to Toby, looking at all the pieces. Hm. He certainly seemed enthusiastic. "There's little people too," she observed. "What part first?" she asked.

Toby shrugged. "Half of the time you can't tell until you're halfway through. Alright. How are we going to do this? One page per person? Dari's our finder by defa--"
He looked up. Dari was already sorting like pieces. The alien looked up and met Toby's gaze, expressionless.
"You know when humans do that they call it a disorder."
Smiling slightly, Dari went back to sorting. He was incredibly fast at it. Probably another fourth-dimension thing Toby thought, or maybe they didn't even have the same sense of sight. They might never know. It wasn't like Dari had rods and cones to examine.

"One page per person sounds fair," Maia agreed. She watched Dari and grinned. Had they done Lego sets together before, then? "He's making it easier," Maia said, when Toby suggested a disorder. She wasn't even sure which one that'd be--humans seemed to have quite a few of them.
"Which page fo you want, Toby?"

"Ladies first," Toby said, holding out the manual open to the first page of instructions. Dari leaned over and peeked at the paper, then returned to sorting inhumanly quickly.

Maia took the first page, examined it and started looking for the pieces she needed to build What was on there. Hm. So if she followed this, they'd have part of a pirate ship! She started to snap pieces together.

Things were oddly silent as Maia worked. Toby watched casually, actually making sure nothing was misunderstood. One little mistake made things much more difficult down the line.
When she was finished, he turned and gestured to Dari.
"You're closer to a lady than I am, so."
"I'm sorting."
"Do it anyway. Be wild."
Dari smiled, shook his head, and took the manual. Okay, and then on top of what Maia built... He finished it and handed it to Toby, and so they would continue.
