Maia took it. She set the smaller one down and beamed, hugging the larger seal. She would have hugged Toby too, if both their arms hadn't been full. "Perfect," she said. "Want to look some more, or are you ready to go?"

"Well that's up to you! We could walk around the whole store, if you'd like." He didn't mind. Today was a day for doing random, happy things.

"We could go look at other stores," Maia mused. They'd found enough things, hadn't they? But what if they found something that really caught Toby's attention? Today was about distracting him, after all. "Lets look around some more. I'll go get a cart so you don't have to carry everything." She set her stuff down and hurried off to find a cart.
She returned and took the water guns from him and set them in. Much more practical. She picked up the seals and placed them in the baby seat of the cart. "You pick, which aisle next?"

Toby wasn't necessarily in the mood for shopping, but if Maia wanted to stay out he'd gladly follow her around. Life was too short to b***h about the little things. He didn't want to feel sad. For once this week he was distracted and happy.
"Anywhere. I don't care." Legos had been around since he was a kid, but that was about it. He was pretty sure he saw a robotic golden retriever on a box down the way.

Maia reached for Toby's hand, so they both could push the cart. She directed him into the boy toys aisle; that seemed the most likely place. Action figures, toy swords and lego sets. Hm. Oh, and miniature cars. Maia was intrigued by those. She took one off the shelf and examined it. How did they get a motor so small? Did it actually work?

"You know, by the time Hot Wheels came out I was already in my twenties?" Toby asked, smiling but heaving a sigh. Lord, he was old. He took one off the shelf and turned it over in his hands. Huh, they sure had changed too.

Oh, there was that sigh. The "I'm so old" sigh. Maia set the car on the shelf and leaned up, ignoring Dari's warning and kissing Toby's cheek. She took a step back. "That doesn't matter, I have no idea when hot wheels came out. But I know you aren't as old as movies. They came out before they even figured out how to do sound with them. They were silent!"

Toby looked briefly startled and then touched his cheek. His heart ached. No. Maia was a friend. A good friend. Look at her, bringing him out here and distracting him from the worst anniversary. He couldn't take things any further than this. He smiled, a bit forced, and nodded.
"No, I was after movies. After glasses and drums too, so I guess we're even."

"Not old at all," Maia said, leading him off. The toy cars seemed to have dampened his mood, so she led him instead to a display of action figures. She was sure they'd had dolls for longer than Toby had been alive. "You know what is old? The ocean. The bottom of the ocean disengrates every so often, but it's remade. Its much older than everything around us."

Toby laughed. "Are you trying to comfort me by telling me I'm younger than the earth itself? Do I really seem that insecure?" He laced an arm around Maia's shoulders. He wasn't too interested in action figures. There weren't any werewolves to be seen either.
"Have you ever played with Legos?"

"Maybe?" At least it seemed to perk him up a bit. She gave him a smile. "Legos?" She asked, looking towards the boxes with that label. "I haven't," she admitted, going over to investigate. "You have, I take it? Oooh. So they snap together. You could make anything!"

"I have," Toby said with a nod, "Pick a set. It's fun." Relaxing too. Distracting. Legos was a good idea, he decided. He didn't like how the "girls" got separate sets with bigger pegs when there had previously been no distinction, but hey, girls likes dinosaurs and spaceships too.

Maia looked over the sets available. There were several based on movies, it seemed; movies she hadn't seen, references she didn't understand. She finally selected a pirate themed one, offering it to Toby. "You can build a boat," she said. "I doubt it'd float, though... Do you see one you like better?"

Toby just wandered around himself, picking up a box here and there and inspecting it. When Maia seemed to have made her choice he turned and smiled.
"Naw, that's a good one. An update of an old classinc, and honestly I'm not sure if it'd float. Probably not. Almost definitely not." He took the box from her to look for the obligatory DO NOT USE IN WATER warning if it didn't.

Able to float or not, Maia was fascinated. Toby seemed happy with her choice. And willing to play with them. Huh. So much for being old. "Ready to go pay?" She asked. They could stay out and find something to do. Maybe go to the park? "We could take a walk in the park," She suggested.
