Forgive me Pern if I think your idea is a bit retarded, I'm not comfortable with the whole cliche "Darkness is evil" thing. And near the ending of your explanation you make them sound like vampires.
Edit: Derp, I was thinking of the word idiot, and retarded at the same time, I meant idea. Forgive me, it's early.

I never said materials like custom weapons or anything is what makes you have a superior character. What I mean is that literally most guilds, that I've experienced in the past, will not let you rise to the top. You can be strong, so long as you don't bother those in power, but you can't be the strongest because as soon as you try to take over or change something they do whatever they can to dumb your character down or just outright kill your character off.
